Giro d'Italia - Stage 13

Definitely a very tough stage here. Two long and steep mountains. On the closer look you see that in especially the 2nd is extremely steep and could lead to huge gaps.
Perfect chance for Schleck and Madrazo to play their advantage in the mountains. Is Ricco able to defend the jersey once more or is this the stage, he struggles?

7 breakaway riders today and as you can see by their formation, it`s a windy day.

Festina`s sprint train is once more isolated at the front of the peloton. This is obviously not ideal on a difficult stage as this one and so the gap is up to 11min at the Cat.3. Also does not make it easier that Gasparotto crashed and only made it back now.

Tzortzakis dropping pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Schleck? Unlikely. As no crash was reported, the 3rd in the GC obviously just had a puncture. Suaza, Hussein and Kirsch drop back to help him. Slagter for now is staying in the peloton.

He though makes it back halftime down the climb again. The gap to the break though is at 19min! This means Ginanni is just 4min off the race lead!

20km left and we still see the red jersey of Tzortzakis in the front. At least Pichon and Koretzky are a tiny bit better and keep that gap consistent while Campero is just working a very bit.
Sorry but the other teams in the top10 should really help them as its their places to be in bigger danger.

Though we again see a very early attack. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Schleck still going early, which is just understandable in this situation. He once more is followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mei.png Cunego.
But as all team mates are totally exhausted pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png Ricco decides to go himself while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bac.png Úran is also trying to follow. It`s the most active performance so far from him.

Velits, Brajkovic, Guldhammer, Pozzovivo, Kohl all follow and for some reason also Kump!
With Campero also a Festina helper decides to follow.

In the end though lots of more riders follow including Nibali and a couple of unexpected puncheurs...
Denifl or Anton are names that are still behind.

Madrazo couldn`t close the gap yet but at least Velits joined them bringing more power.
Brajkovic, Nibali, Pozzovivo, Guldhammer and Kohl next then ahead of Anton.
Denifl still in peloton 3min behind Schleck group!

With a bit more than 10km though he finally attacks and now goes up the climb in his speed.

Pozzovivo, Guldhammer and Brajkovic also make it to the Madrazo group. The gap to the next became a bit smaller but still 47s.
Kohl/Nibali 41s behind and another 90s Denifl/Anton with Brambilla also leaving the peloton now.

Well, they just made it and now already off again. Guldhammer struggling the most with Pozzovivo/Brajkovic still trying.

Uran drops from the Schleck group. Ricco still going strong to defend the jersey here. Gilbert as first breakaway rider caught as well but the leading rider is still 12min ahead.

This was actually Kratochvila, who wins solo ahead of Galta a bit behind. He clearly was the strongest in the group and slowly created a gap to the others.

With 2km to go Schleck attacks trying to get rid of Ricco while Cunego follows easily. But the Maglia Rosa is hard to drop as he can keep the wheel of Cunego.

And this lasts until the finish where all three finish together. Well done Ricco. Schleck was strong today but could not gain any time on him.

Earlier already Zakarin, Le Bon and Ginanni in this order.

Pirazzi still ahead of the next then while Madrazo is losing another 1'30 to Schleck. Velits and Brajkovic a bit behind him with Uran, Pinot , Pozzovivo and Guldhammer all coming in with small gaps.

Nibali leads in the next group with Anton, Denifl, Kohl. Clearly those are the struggling ones on those climbs. Nibali and Denifl probably lack the acceleration to match the others.

Time limit struggle was expected today. Though only 6 riders out and Metinvest, who struggled the most yesterday only lose one rider. Chernobyl and Volkswagen with 2 including Ulanowski after some solid sprints this Giro. The 6th is Kwok from Meiji.
