Ricco has gained a lot of time in the hills. Today we are back for the mountains and from now on Schleck and Madrazo need to gain time here to come back in the GC fight.
The tougher climb today is surely the first with very steep sections. The 2nd is by far less steep and ends on a plateau and even a short descent in the end.

6 riders in the breakaway.

No GC dangers by those today as all are several minutes behind.

Reaching the Cat.1 the gap is up to 6min.

The Festina sprint train mainly is doing the early job. This includes Tzortzakis as well. One of Festina`s problems here that the support for Ricco is rather weak. 3 sprinters, 2 puncheurs, 1 flat rider and only Campero is somewhat a support in the mountains, though not the strongest neither. And with a double focus on sprints and GC this team basically is working on every single stage since Ricco got the Maglia Rosa.
Not a big surprise that with Van Keirsbulck, Coquard, Tzortzakis and Gasparotto doing the pace at the moment, they struggle to reduce the gap to stronger climbers in the group. Even when Pichon or Koretzky take over, it`s still not real mountain power.
That said it`s enough to drop a couple of riders including sprinters Guardini and Ulanowski.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Giro/mg2015_giro_12_PCM0333.jpg

On top of the mountain we saw some attacks. For teh KoM only or a real attack?
Reaching the group is rather impossible now to be honest as the fight breakaway-Festina sprinters doubled the time gap to over 11min! No other team wanted to support Festina and this is the result now.
The attackers are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mus.png Fraile, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/btc.png Portela and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pok.png Faiers. Last though quickly is caught again.

Some riders need to gain lots of time. So a couple of them is attacking right at the foot of the 2nd climb. Those are:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ozc.png Pozzovivo
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Schleck
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mei.png Cunego

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/qst.png Madrazo

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Velits
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/onc.png Brajkovic
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/onc.png Antón

More riders are just behind but more or less not attacking but instead pulling hard with an diesel engine. Those are most others such as Guldhammer, Nibali, Uran, Kohl, Denifl, Faiers, Brambilla, Pinot. Those quickly catch Anton again and are just behind the last group pulling lots of the peloton with them, where Suaza struggles it seems. Not his day and clearly not as strong as in the mountain opener.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Giro/mg2015_giro_12_PCM0354.jpg

Schleck goes into the front now. Pozzovivo and Cunego are strongest and are still with him as they catch Fraile now. All other attacks fusioned in the later group of 16 riders.

Still in the peloton behind are also some notable names such as Brambilla, Ratiy, König, Costagli, Kunshin, Suaza, Krasnoperov.

Power move by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/onc.png Brajkovic as he joins the trio in front. It`s still several minutes to the breakaway. But for those it`s about the time gaps in between them. 38s to the next solo rider pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bac.png Úran while the group behind did split. And surprisingly pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png Ricco struggles! Did he spend too much energy in the hills?
Also Madrazo with problems today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Giro/mg2015_giro_12_PCM0367.jpg

Ricco himself has to work now. No team mate left for quite some time. This though counts for most other riders as well.
The gap to the Madrazo group is tiny. Schleck though is quite a bit ahead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Giro/mg2015_giro_12_PCM0372.jpg
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Giro/mg2015_giro_12_PCM0374.jpg

Madrazo attacked his group now and with him Guldhammer. Both reach Uran making it a trio 50s behind the Schleck group.
Ricco, who just jumped to that group is finding his legs again forming a dup with Pinot behind them.
Velits, Denifl or Nibali still behind them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Giro/mg2015_giro_12_PCM0376.jpg

The final part was very steep and here the later riders really struggled. Lucky Ricco that Velits and Denifl has reached him. They cooperate well together but actually are already 2min behind the Schleck group!

Meanwhile the trio in between did split as Madrazo is 25s only behind Schleck with Guldhammer and Uran following a bit later also solo.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Giro/mg2015_giro_12_PCM0378.jpg

But back to the front. No question for quite some time now that they will take it. Riders should attack far more often in next stages if Ricco keeps the race lead. Their support riders won`t be able to catch them on hard stages and other teams would need to support them.
Pomoshnikov did attack and tries it solo now with 2km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Giro/mg2015_giro_12_PCM0380.jpg

And he keeps that gap until the line. Big win for Tinkoff. Yates only can fight for 2nd ahead of Rabottini, Aasvold and Barguil.
Gilbert got dropped and finished as 6th with 3min.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Giro/mg2015_giro_12_PCM0382.jpg

Schleck leads the first GC group without changes. Pozzovivo, Brajkovic and Cunego with him +6'25.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Giro/mg2015_giro_12_PCM0384.jpg

Madrazo comes in solo and he only lost 41s in the end. So he gave them a good fight and reduced the loss a bit. More important for him might be that he gained on Ricco. Though he needs better legs to avoid being passed by Schleck in the GC.

Guldhammer, Uran also solo a bit behind him. Then a wild Kohl appeared and somehow passed the Ricco group. He just finishes ahead of them though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Giro/mg2015_giro_12_PCM0388.jpg

Ricco comes in with +9'07 together with Velits, Denifl, Pinot and Kolesnikov. This means a loss of almost 3min to Schleck and 2min to Madrazo.
GC wise still 1'39 and 2'01 to them though. Can`t allow much more of these days as we are only on the 12th stage.

The group around Nibali is only 21s behind them including Faiers, Anton, Kirsch, Ratiy and Brambilla.

Also König did attack the peloton in the end with Kunshin, Suaza, Topchanyik, Scarponi and Costagli.

Guardini with +37'50 within the time limit today but in last group. In general Metinvest riders struggled here with 4 in last 5 riders.
