What a stage! Not the most typical stage for a Grand Tours but definitely one that makes things very interesting. 226km shows already classic length and it`s no flat section here. It`s going up and down all the time with the highlight surely being the final 40km in the area of the Strade Bianche with white gravel roads.
The profile zoom shows the difficulty there. Lots of tough slopes and opportunities to attack.
Definitely a stage that favours the puncheurs the most and it will be interesting to see how wide spread the GC riders are in the end. Riders like Cunego or Ricco are rated high today while others might struggle. Also Maglia Rosa Andy Schleck is more a climber than a rider for those kind of slopes.

Unfortunately we had a couple of crashes already.

All Vesuvio riders are leading the peloton ahead of Schleck. With 60km to go the gap is at 3'40. Puncheur teams like Pokerstars or Red Bull though are also at the front working at times.

We are on the final 25km and the peloton is just a bit over a minute behind. The two stronget Palini and König decide to accelerate dropping the others.
Meanwhile the first climbers with low hill skills are dropped. Krasnoperov or Solis are included.

First attack and it`s an interesting one as Pendleton`s is one of those teams with a top puncheur and a solid GC option. Apparently they go for the stage win today as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pnd.png Gilbert attacks.

Only Gilbert immediately opened a gap though. The others had to go another time and now pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Schleck follows. Definitely not his terrain but apparently he feels well. Behind him pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bac.png Ulissi, another stage hunter in a team with a GC rider in Uran.
With Schleck in front it`s no surprise to see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/qst.png Madrazo following. With him are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pok.png Ginanni and a bit later also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/onc.png Brajkovic, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ayu.png Pinot, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png Ricco, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Velits, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vwa.png Denifl, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Guldhammer, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pok.png Faiers, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pro.png Brambilla. So most GC riders going for it.

So here a short overview over the most recent action with 19km to go. Swisscom are working behind now as Nibali is still in the peloton. Also Bacardi for Uran even though Ulissi is in front and Good Energy for Ponzi.
Also Cunego, one of todays expected is still behind!

The first favourite group is passing König/Palini easily and some riders attack right then. Ginanni with Braijkovic, Ulissi and Ricco. Gilbert, who joined earlier not going immediately.

This acceleration sees pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Schleck struggling. 10km to go and in especially Ricco in front is not ideal. Also Brajkovic with a strong move here. With Schleck still Madrazo and Guldhammer, so still ahead of quite some more riders.

Velits jumped to the Schleck group in between but on the gravel roads now the race leader is struggling even more as Madrazo attacks and he can`t respond. Ricco is actually already 1'30 in front!

The peloton is not giving up yet and this is good for some riders, who missed the attack. That said, it`s only like a 3rd peloton actually. Biggest GC names here are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ozc.png Pozzovivo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bac.png Úran. Suaza or Ratiy are other names.

Ginanni going strong. He is 35s ahead of Ulissi/Ricco.
Then already a huge gap of 1'50 ro Madrazo/Brajkovic/Gilbert/König and another 40s to the Schleck group.
Cunego solo behind that one with another 40s! Denifl, or Pinot in hte first bigger group behind then.

On the final kilometer Ricco is giving everything. He knows he has the Maglia Rosa secured. But every second counts as it`s not only for a couple of days but for the whole GC for him.

Deserved winner though is Ginanni! Great solo ride by him and clearly the strongest here.
30s later Ricco comes in 2nd and must be a happy rider now. Anoter 22s to Ulissi, who struggled in the end.

Brilliant! Brajkovic with a huge top5 step here in the GC by taking 4th on such hilly stage! Gilbert just behind him as 5th.

And look who`s coming net already! Cunego passed the Schleck group easily. Then jumped to Madrazo also passing him.
Though he did spend a lot of energy for this solo and so there is no gap to Madrazo. Also within this group König, Pomoshnikov and also Velits, who jumped to the group with Cunego.
3'34 though for them. So quite a lot to Ricco.

Schleck follows half a minute later with Guldhammer, Ignatiev, Ponzi and Kreder. Not too bad for Schleck on a stage like this but losing 4min must be a bit too much for him as he finds himself more than 2min behind Ricco now and also 15s behind Madrazo.

Igor Anton and Nibali lead the first bigger group with +5min. Brambilla, Denifl, Kolesnikov, Kunshin are more GC riders.

Worst performance for Pozzovivo. He just had a bad day here and this is a huge fail for his stop5 ambitions. +7'43 for him. Even behind the 2nd peloton around Kohl. Also Skujins in that group as he surely was disappointing today finishing with Tzortzakis or Guerao only.
