Second consecutive cobbled stage here, again featuring a few short climbs and just slightly less pavé sectors than yesterday. The overall profile though looks a bit easier anyway.
Summerhill went for an impressive solo-victory in the opener. Vanspeybrouck kept himself in contention though. Baugnies and twelve more riders seem to be left for any higher GC-ambitions here.
Six riders went clear from the bunch in the first quarter of the stage, establishing a comfortable gap quickly:
Steurs
Joseph (GC + 9.53 as 20th)
Polanc
De Backer
Schoonbroodt
Fonzi
Joseph as the only one, who at least was amongst the best riders yesterday, still finishing far behind Summerhill eventually. So no real GC-threat, but again a group with fairly good cobblers.
The breakaway would establish a lead up to 4'40" halfway through the race, with the peloton then starting to chase with a higher pace then.
No real action on today's cobbles, but with now 32km remaining (3 mintues advantage for the break) the pack still went into pieces, as 31 riders are left in the main group.
Most notable names being dropped:
Del Nero (4th)
Coronel (24th)
Grashev (7th)
De Vreese (13th)
Laengen (6th)
So basically yesterday's early escapees and domestiques suffering from their efforts.. so most likely some more riders dropping down the rankings (at least outside the Top-10)!
And now, 18km to go, finally some action: Boonen follows Thomas and Stallaert, who attacked the bunch a few moments before!
Boonen as the only GC-threat of those three (9th in the GC) and aiming to gain back time, that he lost to his puncture yesterday!
Definitely a strong attack and the Belgian catches up to the duo quickly.. they open up a notable gap on the bunch, too!
10km before finish, Polanc drops his former breakaway companions to go for a late solo-run to the finish. Will he "survive"? The peloton wasn't too far behind for the most of the time, but kept things a bit easier then..
It's looking good for those riders leading the race: just 4km remaining and a strong pacing Stallaert managed to catch up to Polanc now.
Boonen/Thomas just 14" in arrears, as they dropped Joseph/De Backer/Steurs easily.. but where's the peloton?
It's 2'45" behind the new leading duo and it's pretty clear, that Boonen (+ 3.19 on Summerhill in the GC) may become a real danger for the American (and of course all others) now!
And so the big guns finally react on Boonen's move: Summerhill, Baugnies and Vandenbergh trying to go clear from the bunch, which definitely struggled in the final third of the race..
Stallaert struggled yesterday, but went for a smart move in today's stage: he easily dropped an exhausted Polanc to take the stage! A class move, this attack with Thomas.. Vanspeybrouck though couldn't put any pressure on Summerhill then..
+ 24" Boonen and Thomas
+ 53" Polanc
So Boonen grabbing bonus seconds in addition to the gap, that he did establish on Summerhill/Vanspeybrouck and co!
+ 2'18" Steurs, Joseph and Summerhill!
The bunch also finishes with the same time as the GC-leader.. quite a loss for a few of the Top-10 riders, who will see Boonen move up in the GC today!
+ 6'08" for a group with Grashev and De Vreese
+ 6'51" for Laengen
+ 12'50" for an autobus group with Del Nero
At least Summerhill and Vanspeybrouck did avoid any serious damage for now: Boonen moves up to 3rd with now just 1'13" of disadvantage on the US boy. Baugnies dropping to 4th that way.
Just 11 riders are left with less than three and half minute disadvantage on Summerhill, with those mentioned escapees from yesterday dropping a few spots. Del Nero going down from 4 to 28 as today's biggest "loser".
