KBC De Panne Tour - Stage 1
tsmoha
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/DePanne/MG15_DePanne_1_000.png

The opening stage for De Panne and it's a challenging parcours around Ronse - featuring several short climbs (though rated flat) and 12km of cobbles in total.

Top-favorites as Summerhill, Vanspeybrouck, Baugnies and Boonen will surely go and try to make for a selective race today.

The break of the day is quickly found and we do have some very very interesting names in this 5-men-group:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Albert
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/blk.png Grashev
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/amx.png De Haes
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rge.png Laengen
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gnu.png Del Nero

No other than E3 Prijs-winner Grashev, as well as one of the best cobblers with Albert going for an early move. BPost of course with several possible threats and that's definitely one big move, if it's pays off!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/DePanne/MG15_DePanne_1_002.jpg

It's an entertaining race already in the first half, as several teams would keep a high pace back in the bunch, seemingly not willing to allow this strong break to stay clear.

They do though, finally increasing it's gap up to 3'40" with still 125km to go. The high pace in the pack leads to a surprising early major split - panic mode for some notable names, that got dropped by a 32-men-group:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/blk.png Thomas
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/lpu.png Joseph
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tom.png Maes
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gzl.png Nuyens
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rge.png Trentin and Steurs
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gen.png Taillefour

as the biggest names facing an early two-minutes-gap on the new main group! A moment of "wow", certainly!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/DePanne/MG15_DePanne_1_003.jpg

This dropped bunch though would make it back to the first group, once the pace would slow down halfway through the race. It may be questioned, however, whether those efforts did cost some energy or not.

Next moment of shock 85km before finish: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gzl.png Veelers punctures! One of the main GC-contenders with some bad luck, but still some way to go of course.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/DePanne/MG15_DePanne_1_004.jpg

We're jumping straight into the final 30km of this tough stage and we now can confirm, that many of those earlier dropped riders would indeed suffer with the pace in the pack going up again!

Veelers would make it back (to stay) with a new 19-men-group forming, now soon to catch up to the early breakaway group (where Del Nero took 10pts towards the sprint competition):

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/azt.png Summerhill and Coronel
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Vanspeybrouck, Boeckmans and De Vreese
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/amx.png Baugnies and Kurth
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/evo.png Boonen, Ingles and Flaksis
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/aeg.png Vanmarcke and Boom
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gnu.png Vandenbergh
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gzl.png Veelers and Pozzato
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/spr.png Drucker
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/amx.png Breschel
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pum.png Declerq
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/lpu.png Joseph

Already two minutes in arrears, a next group with

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tom.png Maes
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gen.png Taillefour
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/aeg.png Nooytens as the most notable names

Other riders like

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/blk.png Thomas or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pum.png Daniel suffer big time to lose minutes today!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/DePanne/MG15_DePanne_1_005.jpg

As soon as group Summerhill/Vanspeybrouck would caught up to the early break, there would happen a next split with seven riders not able to follow: Pozzato, Boeckmans, Breschel, Joseph, Drucker, Coronel and Ingels.

So a group of 17 riders entering the final 17km, where Summerhill launches his first attack today!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/DePanne/MG15_DePanne_1_006.jpg

Vanspeybrouck and - a few moments later - Baugnies also go clear from the group in today's final cobbled sector, 13km before finish!

All three open up a small gap each, with the 14-men-group not yet able to counter those strong moves..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/DePanne/MG15_DePanne_1_007.jpg

And tough luck for Boonen, as he punctures on those cobbles! With about 11km remaining, that's definitely the worst moment to drop!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/DePanne/MG15_DePanne_1_008.jpg

Summerhill won't notice this at all, as he keeps pacing at the very front, maintaining a 21"-gap on Vanspeybrouck!

Additional 50" behind, it's Baugnies also chasing solo - a minute ahead of the next group with Vandenbergh/Veelers/Vanmarcke/Boom!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/DePanne/MG15_DePanne_1_009.jpg

Boonen with a huge fight to catch back to this group, that is down by 3'01" on Summerhill with just 4km remaining though:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/DePanne/MG15_DePanne_1_010.jpg

The big three on a good way to gain valuable time today, while the chasing group gets smaller with De Haes and Flaksis (who helped Boonen) not able to stay with them..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/DePanne/MG15_DePanne_1_011.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/azt.png Summerhill holds on to his gap on Vanspeybrouck and takes this entertaining opening stage! A huge winning move and quite a showing afterall.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/DePanne/MG15_DePanne_1_012.jpg

+ 30" for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Vanspeybrouck, who also delivered today

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/DePanne/MG15_DePanne_1_013.jpg

+ 2'13" for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/amx.png Baugnies, who couldn't hang on with the best two - still another gap on the next bigger group..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/DePanne/MG15_DePanne_1_014.jpg

+ 2'59" for this group, where pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/amx.png Kurth and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/evo.png Boonen complete the Top-5 today!

An epic comeback for today's most unlucky top-favorite Boonen, who certainly could have done better without this puncture, it seems. Also quite an important result for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/aeg.png Boom, who survived this stage in the first main group.

+ 7'37" for a small group with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/spr.png Drucker

+ 9'33" for a bigger group with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tom.png Maes, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gen.png Taillefour and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/amx.png Breschel

Some huge gaps from today's 16th placed Flaksis on! We might have seen the remaining GC-contenders in today's Top-15..

16 riders did not make the finish (including 6 from Sauber) and Summerhill, obivously, takes the GC-lead.
