And were we are with the first of two mountain stages here in and around Vancouver: today's summit finish on the 'Cypress' is steeper than the second summit in two days.

Definitely a key stage for anyone aiming for the GC: Abal with the race-lead, facing some tough competition with other favorites like Contador, Intxausti, Keizer, VDB or Sella.

The first breakaway is quickly found, building up a comfortable gap on the challenging circuit through Northern Vancouver:

German supertalent Herklotz pretty much dominating all sprints here (both points and mountains) and taking over the provisional KoM-lead with of course still the finishing climb to come:

The group's advantage would melt down to less than 2 minutes, as they leave the circuit about 30km before finish..

And with those 30km remaining, we would also see the first serious attacks out of the peloton, with a bigger group of 8 riders launching some early moves: Pedraza and Ruijgh as the first to go clear.

A few more riders tried to follow, including Van den Broeck and Marquez/Panayatov as the most notable names..

As we now enter the final climb - 16km to go - we get a clearer picture though - a few more big guns joined the attacks in the meantime:

An action-packed race now settles down for a few moments, with those groups shaping up with now 12km remaining:

Herklotz, Pedraza and LÃ¶vkvist are caught by group Abal/Contador/VDB/Sella..

Panayotov couldn't follow, but keeps fighting with now 43" of disadvantage already..

The peloton with Keizer, Intxausti and Marquez additional 30" in arrears at this point!

7km remaining and Herklotz is dropped by group Abal/Contador! The German gave it a good fight with his captain Nerz yet missing in the recently built groups here.

Also Pedraza is suffering big time, as couldn't hang on with neither this group and the chasing group Keizer/Intxausti, that is a minute behind!

No more attacks until we enter the final 4km of the climb: group Keizer/Intxausti down by 46" on group Abal now..

Herklotz dropping back to support Nerz, who at least attacked the bunch to limit the damage. He's a minute behind this group with Keizer though.. also Kiserlovski couldn't hang on here.

Back to the front, where no one launched a late move: that's the sprint for line honours now: Abal leading the group, LÃ¶vkvist, VDB and Valls with the more promising positions..

Abal takes his second stage-win here! He looked in control today, joining some quite early moves and beating the best of the day then.

An entertaining stage with still a few riders performing on the same level. We're looking forward to an hopefully again thrilling GC-battle here in Canada.

Abal extends his GC-lead by a few seconds (plus re-taking the points and KoM-lead), as he now leads by 23 seconds ahead of Contador an 30 on VDB/LÃ¶vkvist! Keizer now 1'08" down as 7th, Intxausti 1'31" as 10th. Both will need to bounce back in two days. Same goes for Nerz in particular.
