First uphill stage. To be fair, the final climb is all but very steep but a nice double climb at the end and it`s surely the first day, where Ignatiev must fight to defend his lead.
Favourites are the puncheurs but within those are some GC riders already.

Poor pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/btc.png Kneisky. After several other attempts early on, it was a solo rider to finally make it. The French rider has a long and lonely day ahead of him while Metinvest are mainly working behind.
At the first sprint it was actually surprising that the sprinters didn`t fight for those two more spots. Instead Metinvest rolled over the line first.

The KoM was more contested though as we see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ork.png Schreurs going for it. Or actually it seems to be an attack?
3rd over the line De Gendt as Quickstep is working a bit as well now.

It was indeed an attack. Though 17km later Festina caught him. Weird one as the Dutch puncheur should have waited until the later climbs.

Kneisky has reached also the next Cat.3 as first. This time though we see some riders having just attacked and are joining him now. Those are a couple of decent puncheurs:

Those are mainly 2nd tier puncheurs and so Quickstep is now supported by Pokerstars (Ginanni) and Red Bull (Skujins).

Those two actually attack just a bit later on the descent.
They are followed by Ulissi, but the Italian is not really able to get a gap.

With 10km to go another attack. This time in the attack group as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ayu.png Roux goes solo.
Ginanni and Skujins are caught a bit later as Quickstep really are hammering in the final.

So it`s also not looking good for the remaining attackers. Roux still in front and Grivko and De Bie are trying to bridge to him. With a bit more than 5km to go we have reached the final uphill.

Behind Zakarin and Popkov we also get the first huge attack. It`s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mei.png Cunego, who is only 163th with +4'14 due to his bad luck on the 2nd stage. Today is a good opportunity to get some time back.

He first struggles to create a gap but with another attempt he is able to make it.

Those six now establish a small gap and with 3km Grivko with the next acceleration followed by Roux.

Behind in the peloton a long line of top riders.
Skujins, Madrazo, Ricco, Ginanni, Ulissi, Guldhammer, Schleck, Ignatiev.

It was hard to see but there was another Cat.3 just before the finish as it`s going to be flat from here for the final 1500m. De Bie, Caruso and Roux go over the top first with the peloton slowly closing.

Cunego starts the sprint. De Bie not far behind and also Roux still in the mix. The other attackers look tired and will slowly drop while the top riders are soon catching them.

Ignatiev and Ginanni coming fast. First not giving up as he wants to keep his jersey.
But one more rider needs a mention. Skujins actually has already passed most riders and is in 3rd position behind Cunego and De Bie!

But it`s enough for Cunego. He fully deserves this win today as he attacked at the right moment. He won`t get a gap really but he gets 20s and a stage win.
De Bie coming in next ahead of Skujins.
Ricco, Grivko and Ignatiev next all with the same time.

And as there were always riders in between smaller gaps, todays stage did not deliver any time gaps. The flat kilometers in the end surely helped to avoid a big selection. Plus the easier slopes here.
