Giro d'Italia - Stage 2

We start the 2nd stage of the Giro today. After yesterday`s TTT success by Metinvest, Ignatiev is the rider with the Maglia Rosa. Today is supposed to be for the sprinters. Well basically. In the end we face 3 late Cat.4 climbs, which definitely will make it difficult for those.
So the favourite list could really change depending on the pace over those. It actually could also list the top puncheurs here, who use the Giro for stage hunting.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Giro/mg2015_giro_01_PCM0230.jpg

Wildcard rider pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/coc.png Orlov made himself a name as first 2015 Giro d'Italia attacker. Though his low experience made him go too early. Not often the first attack is successful. So the deciding move was missed by him. The final break of the day has 3 riders:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/btc.png Lietaer
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ork.png Andersen
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/met.png Hacecký
Last rider actually leads to some rant in the peloton. Metinvest has the GC lead and actually a sprinter in their rows. So they were expected to work today. Instead they make themselves a calm day by sending one of their riders into the break. Not very popular move.
So it`s up to Red Bull (Guerao) and GC teams Vesuvio and Quickstep to chase them. Also Festina is seen for Ricco/Tzortzakis. Interesting that Festina is actually sending leadout rider Coquard into the chasing.

And Metinvest not making any more friends as Hacecký is working not a lot in front but taking both sprint and KoM.

The break had a maximum of 7min today but when also Oz Cycling for Goss joined the work, the gap quickly dropped.
And with 80km to go, the peloton finally annoyed Metinvest enough. So they start to work for their GC lead now. With 22km and we are on the 2nd of the 3 late hills, the gap is down to 2min. This is going to be close.
You can see how steep it is here. 2-digit percentages! Surely no sprinter stage and the break might even take profit.

Lietaer did better here by beating Hacecký for the points both times.

Split in the peloton! And at least one GC rider is in there and you can guess already as Meiji is working hard. Apparently pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mei.png Cunego punctured shortly before but this is not guaranteed. Might have been a weak moment of low concentration as well.
Other riders behind are puncheurs Ginanni, Claeys, Roux, Palini, Gilbert, Caruso or Barrio who all have no ambitions today and probably lose some time for a later breakaway attempt.
With Suaza another strong climber in there as well. Though he is a pure mountain goat and just hates hills just like Solis who is even further behind already.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Giro/mg2015_giro_01_PCM0259.jpg

The breakaway did split. All riders solo now with Lietaer being the strongest. Andersen actually almost caught already by the peloton. Lietaer has 1min left with 13km to go.
Festina, Oz and Red Bull really going strong behind now and seeing that riders like top puncheur Skujins or even GC rider Pozzovivo as also Koretzky or Pichon are doing some relays that late today, this shows the advantage over the breakaway riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Giro/mg2015_giro_01_PCM0267.jpg
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Giro/mg2015_giro_01_PCM0270.jpg

This comes surprising but is not too weird actually.
On a flat rated second stage of a GT we see the first GC attack! On such a profile though it was offering such a move.
First pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Guldhammer tried on the top of the last hill but had no chance as Pozzovivo was closing the gap immediately.
But just after the descent and with only 5km to go he tried again and this time got some company by Festina leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png Ricco. Both are just a couple of bike lengths behind Lietaer as last rider in front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Giro/mg2015_giro_01_PCM0273.jpg

Red Bull with Skujins though did not allow them any gap. They want to make it a win for Guerao it seems and seeing the Spaniard in 3rd position actually is impressive on such stage.
There is some chaos and teams struggle to form trains but at least they do it a bit:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png Gasparotto

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Veselypcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Gueraopcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png Tzortzakis

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mei.png Napolitanopcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/met.png Ignatiev
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/met.png Guardini

Quite weird to see so many sprinters making it to the front after those hills, that were ridden fast. Though it`s a race many riders peak for and it`s only stage 2.
That said some surprising riders don`t look to be interested:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gde.png Ponzi would have loved such stage last year where he won impressively similar stages.
Also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/btc.png Roelandts, who was expected to perform the best from all sprinters on this terrain is missing in the first rows.
Kump or Kreder are other riders, who aren`t doing anything today.

Meanwhile pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mei.png Cunego is almost making it to the back of the peloton. Though new gaps seem to open in front of him again. This is a tough fight for him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Giro/mg2015_giro_01_PCM0294.jpg

The sprint has started and the 2 semi sprint trains are surprised by all others passing them. Kennaugh and Vesely in the lead with Napolitano, Goss and Stauff behind them.
Tzortzakis and Guerao still waiting while Guardini struggles it seems.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Giro/mg2015_giro_01_PCM0300.jpg

Kennaugh is done. Napolitano and Vesely look stronger now.
More interesting though some GC riders make it to the front as well as it`s a slightly uphill section here. Schleck, Madrazo are in the top10 fight so is Ricco.
And also Ignatiev in the leader jersey is in 4th position now and looking strong.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Giro/mg2015_giro_01_PCM0304.jpg

Strong enough to go into the lead. These hard sprint stages he prefers as he has a great kick there. The sprinters really struggle. Vesely in 2nd position with Napolitano behind are basically the last.
Then Schleck, Madrazo, Velits, Ricco, Brajkovic and Danacik.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Giro/mg2015_giro_01_PCM0307.jpg

What a win for Metinvest. Ignatiev takes the 2nd stage in the leader jersey. Excellent start into the race for them.
2nd and very surprising as well Angel Madrazo. The Spaniard already collecting some seconds in the overall fight.
Napolitano as 3rd the strongest sprinter today ahead of Vesely! Then already the next GC riders while Goss as only other pure sprinter in hte top 10 as 9th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Giro/mg2015_giro_01_PCM0308.jpg

This hurts. 2nd stage and Cunego already losing time. 2'16 in the end for him just like many others as 90 riders are in that group. He though is the only GC rider, which is a huge loss for him and the team.
