The Giro starts this year in Greece and with a team time trial of 25,3km length. It`s a bit uphill towards the end but nevertheless the time trial skill and team work are main factors today.
Favourites are well known TT teams. And the question is, can someone stop Oz Cycling Project (605 combined TT) from winning all TTT`s?
Best chances to do so have:
Bacardi Limited (581)
Becherovka - Petrof (567)
Metinvest-Dacia (595)
Quickstep (576)
Swisscom - UBS (602)
Vesuvio - Accumalux (595)
The best teams are actually on the road early today. The weather could be better but at least there is no rain and neither any race deciding wind.
Metinvest-Dacia without any GC rider here. For this team todays stage might be one of the most important as with Ignatiev and Zmorka they have an excellent TT duo leading the team. Other than that a stage hunting team.
As first team on the road obviously the first time to beat!
Swisscom - UBS next. With Nibali their situation is different. They surely want to use the TTT to gain some time on other GC riders.
At half time they were 6s behind Metinvest. Towards the end though they struggled a bit and lost another 9s and going into 2nd position.
And here the stage favourites. Oz Cycling Project used to dominate all kinds of TT`s in the past. Today would be another chance and improve Pozzovivo`s GC chances. At the time split though they were still 4s behind.
On the 2nd part they were faster but in total still 2s behind. This keeps Metinvest in the lead. Most likely Pozzovivo himself was their main reason, why they lost today. In comparison to Metinvest, who have no GC rider, Pozzovivo was the weaker time trialist and the team could not go all in it seems. In the end he even lost 3s to his team mates.
Quickstep on the road and it`s the first 85 climber appearance. Angel Madrazo has a strong team around him with huge mountain support. Is this the year where Madrazo wins his first Giro?
3rd place at the moment and just 10s behind Metinvest.
Becherovka - Petrof starts with their GC hope Velits. Also his support is great. With König they actually have another solid GC rider.
5th best time so far with +23s and 13s to Madrazo.
Vesuvio with time trial beast Kittel next. It`s actually the only team here with two 80+ climbers. One of those obviously Andy Schleck, the big favourite and with the chance of the career triple GT. Suaza and Kirsch are probably a little bit better support than Brenes and co. for Madrazo. And todays TTT is very equap between them.
While Vesuvio was 4s faster than Quickstep at the split it was exactly the other way afterwards seeing both teams with +10s to Metinvest. Vesuvio though is ranked as 3rd.
Last team in todays coverage is VolksWagen - Andritz. Definitely the weakest of those but still quite solid. Denifl is by skills the 3rd best climber in this field and is hoping to podium here.
Only 8s at the intermediate and up to 24s in the end is nothing too bad.
No other team came close to Metinvest`s time, while some already lost quite some time.
Riders like Ricco (+71s), Pinot (+83s) or Cunego (+98s) might be the ones, who need to attack the most to overcome their TT weakness.
And so Metinvest takes a huge win. Well deserved and it`s some kind of dejavu. Just like last year, when Metinvest only had a wildcard for the Giro, Russian Rocket Ignatiev takes the maglia rosa after stage 1. Seeing the profiles of the next days he might wear it for more than just a day.
