Queen stage, key stage: 140km in total, a hilly route finishes off with a 5km uphill finish - featuring quite steep slopes and the chance to create crucial gaps.
Craven did win this stage in style last year, while Costa, Kelderman or Sanchez Gil should be the top-favorites this time.
An early break with 5 riders is never allowed a bigger gap than three minutes, as we do see some dangerous names out there:
Weening (KoM-leader)
Cataldo
Stachowiak
Bevin
Einsle
Weening obviously trying to extend his lead in the mountain classification, which he does:
KoM Weening 42, Olsson 28, Stachowiak 20
The group is later joined by Wallays, Khalilikhosroshani and Amanuel - but this would only lead to the peloton taking even more care of pulling all escapees back right in time..
Bevin as the last man standing with about 9km to go, but soon to be caught by the bunch - as all other escapees. Bellis and Mehr-Wenige would give it a go prior to the finishing climb, but short-lived.
The biggest news then happened inside this final 9km, as Kangert went down in a crash, now desperately trying to catch back with the peloton!
Bibby not looking good after losing minutes with a puncture yesterday, as he's already dropped by the 80-men-bunch at this point..
And now for the short, but challenging climb - 3km to go! Kangert would make it back to the pack, but obviously not yet at the very front, where we see the first riders going clear:
Sanchez Gil
Nepomnyachsniy
Kelderman
Costa
Bellis
Craven
Hategeka
Koren
Boom
Boily
Meyer
Costa was the first to attack, but got some strong company soon. Sanchez Gil now with a counter-move, trying to escape from the new leading group!
And that was a strong move from LLS, who opened up a gap on group Costa! Less than a kilometre remaining and the Spaniard leads by 17" on a new chasing group with 4 riders!
A next 5-men-group further 38" in arrears, with Boom fighting to limit the damage now.. the bunch sits up, with only a few single riders - like Kangert - trying to go clear now..
Sanchez Gil takes the stage then! His move about 3km before finish was the winning move, as he never looked in trouble to get pulled back by group Costa/Kelderman! There's a notable gap, that may be crucial for tomorrow's timetrial..
+ 26" Costa, Kelderman, Nepomnyachsniy, Bellis
Costa grabbing valuable bonifications, too. Nepomnyachsniy with a great performance as the best TT-specialist amongst today's Top-5!
+ 1'01" Meyer, Boily
+ 1'11" Koren, Hategeka, Craven
Meyer and Boily just a few seconds ahead of Koren and Craven, who will fancy their chances to attack those guys tomorrow. Definitely a great stage for Koren, who kinda saves Gazelle's day after Kangert's bad luck here..
+ 1'44" Boom, who's also still in the mix for a better Top-10 result
+ 3'50" Kangert
+ 4'53" Hollenstein
The next groups/bunch comes in at 5'20" upwards, so Kangert gave it a fight here. Quite a gap on those riders ahead though..
+ 5'24" for Oliveira
+ 6'16" for Cornu, Kreuziger, Tennant
Sanchez Gil taking over the race-lead from Kupfernagel, now leading by 14" on Costa and 38" on Kelderman.. Costa as the slightly better TTler definitely with a chance to attack LLS tomorrow.
Nepomnyachsniy 46" down on LLS: this is doable on a very good day! He will surely aim for more than his 5th place last year. Craven and Koren, as well as Boom look all in striking distance to at least attack GC's 6th Meyer and 7th Boily. Kangert will need a very good day to attack the Top-10.
Cornu (+ 6.36) will now try to at least win the timetrial, with still the chance to enter the Top-15 in the GC.
