First of two hilly stages: a quite challenging profile, but with a rather flat final third of the race. A short climb close to the finish may offer the best chance to attack.
The parcours looks hand-made for punchy sprinters like Demare or McEvoy. Both were quite strong yesterday.. or will we see top-puncheurs like Kelderman, Costa or Sanchez Gil already trying to attack today?
An early (and quite strong) breakaway group with Weening, Olsson, Dyachenko was joined by Stachowiak halfway through the stage.
The group would establish a 4-minutes-gap and Weening, though not looking too interested in those mountain sprints, takes the first KoM-lead here:
KoM Weening 32, Olsson 22, Dyachenko 16
On today's longest descend (about 70km before finish), we have a moment of shock for race-leader Kupfernagel! The German hits the turf on slicky roads and with the chase of the bunch getting more intense now, it's clearly not the best moment to go down..
He's brought back by his teammates though: 12km before finish - the breakaway's gap is down to 45" in the meantime - Kupfernagel is back in the 80-men-peloton! Will he survive that last climb to keep the lead in the GC?
Another shocker first: Bibby punctures and is in real danger to get dropped by the hard chasing pack now! Definitely the worst moment to stop and the GC-contender will face a tough challenge with a quite fast pace at this point..
..even more, as we see a wave of attacks almost at the same time that Bibby punctured! Bellis was the first to launch a move, bridging across the breakaway group quickly.
He would then be accompanied by a few more GC-contenders, so we get a group of 11 riders leading by 45" on the bunch with less than 6km remaining:
Costa
Sanchez Gil
Craven
Kangert
Bellis
Zingle
Meyer
Prevar
Weening
Dyachenko
Olsson
A crucial move for the GC? Still a (flat) way to go for this group..
Kelderman and Mehr-Wenige in panic-mode, now trying to bridge across the new leading group inside the final 3.5km!
The peloton, however, is still pacing, as there are still some sprinters left to go for line honours..
Bibby is down by further 2 minutes and it ain't looking good for him...
The leading group kicks off the sprint and they will battle for the stage-win! The peloton though is just 20" in arrears, so it's not clear yet, if those eleven will also be rewarded with a valuable gap today.
Costa accelerating under the kite, with Prevar, Craven, LLS and Zingle on the further position, already facing a small gap though..
..and so Costa holds on til the line! An impressive sprint and a first sign of strength before tomorrow's more crucial queen stage.
Prevar 2nd ahead of Meyer, Bellis and LLS - the peloton with GC leader Kupfernagel finishes within the same time eventually!
+ 3'11" for Bibby though, who may have lost any GC-ambitions that way. Tough luck for one of the most promising contenders here..
Kupfernagel indeed kept the race-lead thanks to his bonifications in yesterday's intermediate sprints. Costa moving up to 2nd with just 2" disadvantage and the clear favorite for tomorrow's stage.
A few puncheurs showed some aggressive racing today, so will we see the same names trying to attack tomorrow?
