Longest stage so far, again featuring a few minor difficulties, but a rather flat final third of the race. No chance for breakaways so far, so let's talk about the sprinters again:
Ciolek took the race-lead thanks to his first victory and Vantomme struggling the past two days. Kip, Nizzolo and Kupfernagel as the most consistent riders behind the big two, while Avelino obviously still lacking shape or whatever.
A 6-men-breakaway is quickly formed, establishing a comfortable gap early into the stage. It's raining cats and dogs today. Tough conditions overall:
Moinard (KoM-leader)
Renshaw (GC + 1.01)
Viola (GC + 1.01)
Suryadi
Jurco
Sanz
Moinard of course aiming for the two mountain sprints, which he easily takes out to extend his lead in the mountain competition (32pts)!
Renshaw and Viola as the only two in this group not losing minutes due to splits so far..
It's business as usual with the peloton starting to chase in time, cutting the gap down to 2'22" with still 44km remaining. The slicky roads though lead to a crash back in the bunch, with some big names involved:
Vantomme
Nizzolo
Castañeda
Bouhanni
Partridge
go down in a 9-men-crash! A moment of shock and with the pack chasing, definitely a dangerous situation for all involved!
This incident would of course cause some drama in the pack, as TomTom has been one of those teams working in the chase. Good news first: Vantomme, Nizzolo and Castaneda would make it back to the peloton quickly.
Tough luck for Bouhanni though, as he's dropped by the chasing pack about 10km before finish! He might have been hurt in this crash. Also Partridge wouldn't even make it back into the peloton.
Opposing to the previous stages, the early break still leads inside the final 5kms: taking benefit from TomTom focussing on Vantomme now? Moinard goes for another acceleration with the bunch still in striking distance at least!
It may become close, but the early break (Moinard couldn't solo away) enters the final 2km with still a small gap!
No trains, no well organized sprint from the bunch. A few sprinters going all on their own, trying to bridge across the leading group:
Coutinho, Kip, Meyer, Vantomme and Rowe as the most notable names at the front now..
This might be too late though, as Renshaw and Jurco managed to open up a small gap on the breakaway group inside the final km! Renshaw as the better sprint now going past Jurco..
Rowe catching up to the remaining escapees as first, but definitely out of reach for line honours!
Renshaw takes stage five ahead of Jurco! The first time the peloton struggled to catch the break and the Aussie veteran takes benefit to grab the stage.
Rowe came quite close, but a few moments too late: Kip, Meyer, Kupfernagel and Mezgec on the further positions, with Ciolek sprinting for 9th and Vantomme once again struggling as 13th (missing bonifications that way).
Unlucky Bouhanni dropping out of the the GC-contention by losing 2'50" eventually..
As for the GC now: Ciolek now 6" ahead of Vantomme, but Kupfernagel (10 seconds), Kip (11) and Rowe (16) made up some ground. Nizzolo dropping to 6th, but still in the mix for the podium. Renshaw collecting some valuable bonifications to move up to 9th, ahead of Mezgec, Drapac and (of course) Avelino (20th).
