Lots of climbing today, but the finish isn't all that tough. Mendes would want to put some time into the others if he stands a chance of a good GC finish. It will be interesting to see how or if Indosat try to control today's break for race leader Kruopis. It might be a day for the escapees after a close call yesterday! Seems like the bookies have tipped the mountain climbers as greater threats than the puncheurs.
***
Mendes Acevedo Soler
**
Belmokhtar Atapuma Bagot
*
Simon Hardy Molard
Nieve
Lots of attacks before the first sprint, but Indosat keep it together for Kruopis who takes max points.
Sprint #1 1 Kruopis6pt 2 Kankovský4pt 3 Moser2pt
As we head into the Argentinian countryside it's Lemus Davila, Omarsson, and Matteau who slip away. All are 4'39 behind on GC so may get some leeway from Indosat at least.
At the top of the first KoM point the gap is 5'34. Omarsson's pace can't be matched by the other two.
KoM #1 1 Omarsson6pt 2 Lemus Davila4pt 3 Matteau2pt
It's the same order at the top of the big mountain. Meanwhile, the gap to the pack has been reduced to 4'21 with 63km remaining.
KoM #2 1 Omarsson16pt 2 Lemus Davila12pt 3 Matteau10pt 4 Jakin8pt 5 Sweeting6pt 6 Affonso4pt 7 Sonnery2pt
Strangely, it's Verkefnid Iceland doing the damage causing the weak climbers to find themselves in serious difficulty already at the back. Most notables battling the time limit are:
Thorsen
Kankovský
Haddou
Hutarovich
Besada has also sacrificied his stage chances by dropping back to assist sprinter Rizza.
The sprint with 40km remaining is uncontested. The lead is down to 2'48.
Sprint #2 1 Lemus Davila6pt 2 Omarsson4pt 3 Matteau2pt
30km and 2'31 as Chaabane has set off on his own in pursuit. Indosat and still In-n-Out driving the pace.
Chaabane just about catches the escapees with 16km left and Omarsson senses the others weakening and goes at it alone! The gap back to the bunch is 2'44 now, so he's in with a very good shot at a stage win.
Under the 10km banner and Omarsson has pulled out a massive 1'13" lead on a visibly tired chase group. He's got a healthy 3'31 gap to the pack. Alpina have hit the front and are setting a much tougher pace now.
5km of hell left for Omarsson who will battle the tough finishing climb. He's 1'15 ahead of the chase group, with the bunch 2'51 in arears.
2,5km to go the bunch reacts with an attack from Hardy followed by:
Acevedo
Soler
Bagot
Brandt
Martinez
Mendes is napping far down the group ahead of KoM jersey Muhlberger.
2km remaining and Hardy and Soler catch up to the 3 pursuiters. Acevedo, Bagot, Brandt, and Martinez follow closely behind.
Yellow jersey Kruopis is holding on to Ochoa Quintero's wheel. They're only 34" behind the group of Soler and Hardy. However, Kruopis can only afford to lose 24".
900m for the Icelandic rider and he can almost see the finish! He's got 1'02 back to the first chase group of 4. The situation looks like this:
P (101) <--> E3 <--> E2 <--> E1 Kruopis20" Lemus Davila32" Hardy1'02 Omarsson Bagot Matteau Martinez Chaabane Brandt Soler
Up ahead Omarsson started his celebration very early because he knew his win wasn't in danger. A great ride by the man from Iceland who seemed to be the strongest the entire day. He'll take a healthy KoM lead as well.
Soler and Hardy have distanced the others to slot in for 2nd and 3rd at 1'18 down.
Brandt had a decent day out on terrain which usually doesn't suit him to come in for 4th - followed by Bagot and Martinez. Chaabane, Manulang, and Malacarne complete the top 10.
But where's the yellow jersey? He put up a valiant effort, but the slopes proved to steep for his sprinter's calves. Kruopis is given a time of down. Atapuma decided to stay with teammate Kruopis as well and relinquished valiable time.
Who would've guessed that Kruopis would climb better than Mendes, though? Badly placed and uninterested finishing th he left the work for his teammate Kasa.
It's Soler who takes the race lead ahead of Hardy. He'll have a tough job to defend 30" to Martinez and Brandt in tomorrow's time trial.
