Tour de San Luis - Stage 3
tsmoha
Lots of climbing today, but the finish isn't all that tough. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sev.png Mendes would want to put some time into the others if he stands a chance of a good GC finish. It will be interesting to see how or if Indosat try to control today's break for race leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ino.png Kruopis. It might be a day for the escapees after a close call yesterday! Seems like the bookies have tipped the mountain climbers as greater threats than the puncheurs.

Lots of attacks before the first sprint, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ino.png Indosat keep it together for Kruopis who takes max points.

As we head into the Argentinian countryside it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mac.png Lemus Davila, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ice.png Omarsson, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ioc.png Matteau who slip away. All are 4'39 behind on GC so may get some leeway from Indosat at least.

At the top of the first KoM point the gap is 5'34. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ice.png Omarsson's pace can't be matched by the other two.

It's the same order at the top of the big mountain. Meanwhile, the gap to the pack has been reduced to 4'21 with 63km remaining.

Strangely, it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ice.png Verkefnid Iceland doing the damage causing the weak climbers to find themselves in serious difficulty already at the back. Most notables battling the time limit are:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bbk.png Thorsen
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bbk.png Kankovský
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sod.png Haddou
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bbk.png Hutarovich

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mac.png Besada has also sacrificied his stage chances by dropping back to assist sprinter Rizza.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/SanLuis/MG15_SanLuis_3_004.jpg
The sprint with 40km remaining is uncontested. The lead is down to 2'48.

30km and 2'31 as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sod.png Chaabane has set off on his own in pursuit. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ino.png Indosat and still pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ioc.png In-n-Out driving the pace.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/SanLuis/MG15_SanLuis_3_005.jpg
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sod.png Chaabane just about catches the escapees with 16km left and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ice.png Omarsson senses the others weakening and goes at it alone! The gap back to the bunch is 2'44 now, so he's in with a very good shot at a stage win.

Under the 10km banner and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ice.png Omarsson has pulled out a massive 1'13" lead on a visibly tired chase group. He's got a healthy 3'31 gap to the pack. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/alp.png Alpina have hit the front and are setting a much tougher pace now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/SanLuis/MG15_SanLuis_3_006.jpg
5km of hell left for Omarsson who will battle the tough finishing climb. He's 1'15 ahead of the chase group, with the bunch 2'51 in arears.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/SanLuis/MG15_SanLuis_3_007.jpg
2,5km to go the bunch reacts with an attack from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ioc.png Hardy followed by:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/alp.png Acevedo
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/alp.png Soler
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ice.png Bagot
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gat.png Brandt
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/chi.png Martinez

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/SanLuis/MG15_SanLuis_3_008.jpg
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sev.png Mendes is napping far down the group ahead of KoM jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sva.png Muhlberger.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/SanLuis/MG15_SanLuis_3_009.jpg
2km remaining and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ioc.png Hardy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/alp.png Soler catch up to the 3 pursuiters. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/alp.png Acevedo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ice.png Bagot, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gat.png Brandt, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/chi.png Martinez follow closely behind.

Yellow jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ino.png Kruopis is holding on to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bbk.png Ochoa Quintero's wheel. They're only 34" behind the group of Soler and Hardy. However, Kruopis can only afford to lose 24".

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/SanLuis/MG15_SanLuis_3_010.jpg
900m for the Icelandic rider and he can almost see the finish! He's got 1'02 back to the first chase group of 4. The situation looks like this:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/CT/SanLuis/MG15_SanLuis_3_011.jpg
Up ahead pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ice.png Omarsson started his celebration very early because he knew his win wasn't in danger. A great ride by the man from Iceland who seemed to be the strongest the entire day. He'll take a healthy KoM lead as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/alp.png Soler and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ioc.png Hardy have distanced the others to slot in for 2nd and 3rd at 1'18 down.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gat.png Brandt had a decent day out on terrain which usually doesn't suit him to come in for 4th - followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ice.png Bagot and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/chi.png Martinez. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sod.png Chaabane, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ino.png Manulang, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gen.png Malacarne complete the top 10.

But where's the yellow jersey? He put up a valiant effort, but the slopes proved to steep for his sprinter's calves. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ino.png Kruopis is given a time of down. Atapuma decided to stay with teammate Kruopis as well and relinquished valiable time.

Who would've guessed that Kruopis would climb better than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sev.png Mendes, though? Badly placed and uninterested finishing th he left the work for his teammatepcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sev.png Kasa.

It's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/alp.png Soler who takes the race lead ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ioc.png Hardy. He'll have a tough job to defend 30" to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/chi.png Martinez and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gat.png Brandt in tomorrow's time trial.
