Perfect weather in France, time for this new one day classic to be kicked off. Top-favorites may be Zeits, Vastaranta or Sinkewitz, while especially the latter two will have several options in their teams..
One of those options for DeLaval? Well, join the breakaway:
Bertilsson
Aaltio
Field
Herrera
So DeLaval leaving the pressure on teams like Netia.. the group establishes a gap up to 6'30" with 100km to go..
..but is pulled back by the peloton rather early into the race: with still 31km remaining, the escaping group is reeled in by the bunch, which is now down to 34 riders thanks to the high pace set by mostly In-n-Out and Netia. Also DeLaval now joining those teams at the front of the main group.
Most notables names being dropped already:
Selander
Juarez
Walker
Atapuma
Chérel
Omarsson
Most of those riders' teams do have at least one more option in the leading group though..
The mentioned teams - Netia and DeLaval in particular - kept pushing it, but even though there happened a minor split at the penultimate climb - this first bunch enters the final climb (2.5km) alltogether again.
And now the first real attacks today - finally, with just 2km remaining and steep slopes of up to 13% ahead:
Zeits
Gaimon
Vastaranta
try to go clear!
A strong acceleration, opening up a 35"-gap quickly!
Der managed to jump behind and catching up with the flamme rouge approaching.
Vastaranta though goes for another attack and this one looks promising with just 700metres to go! He establishes a 15"-gap on the next group of three riders, where his teammate Anacona caught up to Zeits/Gaimon/Der!
There's another group of six riders going clear from the remaining twenty riders in this big group:
Belmokhtar, Strachowiak, Kinney, Santambrogio, Dabrowski, De Maar are 21" behind group Zeits though!
This guy crushed it anyway: Vastaranta sprints to a quite dominating victory! Joining the crucial attack by Zeits and then launching another move with a perfect timing and great speed..
+ 19" Zeits, Anacona and Gaimon
Obviously a huge result for DeLaval, while Zeits will be happy to finish 2nd after his initial move there. Gaimon with a strong, but unlucky 4th.
+ 30" Der, Belmokhtar, Stachowiak/Dabrowski and Santambrogio/Kinney
So despite missing out on the victory (and a quiet Sinkewitz as 22nd today), Netia with an outstanding result overall: 4 riders inside the Top-8, 6 inside the Top-22. Their depth definitely paid off here.
+ 1'16" De Maar, Marentes, Molard from 11th to 13th
Disappointing race for Indosat ( Rocchetti 16th/Atapuma 35th) or Lierse ( Umerbekov 26th), while also other teams like SanCor or Verkefnid Iceland couldn't even finish inside the Top-30 today.
Vastaranta celebrating a prestigious victory with Anacona making it two on the podium for DeLaval. A nice points haul. Same goes for Netia of course.
