We're leaving the biggest mountains behind and going for a classical ___/ stage today. One last chance for the less strong TTlers to gain time on a challenging summit finish. Hilly rated, but still quite a tough finish today.
Signorini took back the GC-lead, but may need to grow his 22"-lead on Lowe here. Is this climb mountainous enough to help him doing so?
A group of nine riders goes for the break of the day:
Kasa
Proni
Flückiger
Wang
Acevedo
Squire
Rusli
Kern
Coutts
Tied KoM-leader Squire going for the last chance to grab points, while there's no real GC-threat with Wang (+ 21.49) as best-placed in this breakaway..
A quiet stage with the usual business: the escaping group not given a too easy time, as it's advantage is cut back down to 1'20" with now 6km remaining. We're on the final climb and the first GC-contenders break clear from the bunch now:
Hirt
Lowe, Gilanipoor
Signorini
Soler
Ebsen, Schoffmann
build a 7-men-group, that established a fairly comfortable gap on the next group(s) quickly!
Most notable names missing this moves so far:
Ochoa Quintero
Peterson
Brandt
Weber
Ochoa, Brandt and aother GC-contenders like Bagot, Novak and Berard find themselves in a next group, already 54" down on group Signorini/Lowe with now 5.5km remaining!
This ain't looking good for GC's 3rd Ochoa, who's not too far ahead Hirt, Soler and Gilanipoor in the GC!
Ochoa now trying to bridge across this group, but it's a tough pace now that Gilanipoor attacks the group Signorini/Lowe about 2km before finish!
The first early escapees are pulled back now, while there's still Wang, Rusli, Kasa and Acevedo ahead of Gilanipoor..
And three of those will go for line honours, it seems: Wang attacking the leading group inside the final 2km, with Rusli and Kasa desperately trying to hang on..
Behind those four, it's getting more and more interesting, as the bigger chasing group goes into pieces now:
Gilanipoor still a few seconds ahead, while Signorini (accompanied by Soler) now puts the well needed pressure on Lowe/Hirt! He's opening up a 15"-gap with 1.2km to go and Lowe doesn't look like he can counter this move!
Ochoa Quintero still a minute behind Gilanipoor, also in danger to lose time on Soler and Hirt today..
Wang's attack was the winning move though, as he holds off Rusli and Kasa by 23" to take the stage! Well done.
+ 56" for Gilanipoor, Acevedo, Signorini and Soler
A strong finish from Signorini, almost going past Gilanipoor on the final metres! Lowe will definitely lose time today, but how much?
+ 1'29" for Lowe and Hirt!
So half a minute loss for Lowe, while Hirt will gain back time on Ochoa..
+ 1'57" for a group with Ochoa Quintero and Novak
+ 2'29" for Brandt, Bagot, Weber and Peterson
Gc-wise, we've at least two very interesting situations now:
Signorini enters tomorrow's timetrial with a 55"-advantage on Lowe, who's stronger against the clock. Enough to keep the lead?
The battle for the final podium spot will be thrilling, too: Soler going onto 3rd today, just 9" ahead of Hirt, 11" on Gilanipoor and 12" on Ochoa! Couldn't be much closer there.
Zielinski still leading the points competition, even though by just three points ahead of Lowe now. The latter still tied KoM-leader, but instead of Squire, it's now Signorini in the co-lead. With no more mountain sprints to come, those two will share the KoM-crown here. Kinda deserved.
