Time for the mountains again and it's a challenging 150km stage today: featuring two long climbs in the final third of the race, there should only the best to survive those brutal climbs.
GC-leader Signorini surely with a nice chance to defend his lead, though it's a narrow GC between the best eight riders (at least). A few other strong climbers may go on the attack today.
Six riders build the break of the day and we see the KoM-leader (at least) aiming for this first HC-rated climb today:
Squire (KoM-leader with 38pts)
Chaabane (KoM's 5th with 26pts)
Proni (GC's 28th, + 3.13)
Acevedo (GC's 33rd, + 3.25)
Zilioli
Ahmad Zamri
So also Chaabane as a possible threat for the mountain competition, while Proni/Acevedo make for a minor GC-threat, if the peloton fails today..
Let's keep it short: it didn't. The early break, as well as three mid-stage attackers (Rosskopf, Lozano, Svab) are brought back rather early and we have a 39-men-peloton entering the final 19km of the stage. We're already ascending the summit finish here.
Proni, by the way, took out the HC-climb ahead of Zilioli, Acevedo, Chaabane and Squire, so the latter defends his KoM-lead:
KoM Squire 46 Khalilikhosroshani 36 Chaabane 36
A few more riders would now try to escape from the bunch:
Roe
Nakane
Ndbri
Orozco
Bagot
as the most aggressive of those, yet all failing to open up a gap, with teams like Indosat and Compal setting a high pace here..
And so it looks all set for the big GC-guns to set the agenda for the final 6km of the race. Signorini as the first to attack and some major splits happen then:
Ochoa Quintero (GC's 4th, + 0.20)
Hirt (2nd, + 0.04)
Lowe (3rd, + 0.08)
Signorini
go clear now, a group of 7 riders about 30" in arrears at this point:
Brandt (GC + 2.01)
Gilanipoor (6th, + 0.20)
Berard (+ 2.01)
Suryadi (7th, + 0.20)
Soler (5th, + 0.20)
Peterson (+ 2.01)
Løvik (+ 2.01)
Further 50" behind:
Novak (9th, + 1.04)
So quite an elite selection now, with a few notable names like Hardy, Chawchiangkuang, Nieve, Kasa or former race-leader Bauer likely to lose their Top-10/20 spot today..
Just 1km to go now and Lowe goes for a late and strong looking attack! He drops group Signorini quite easily, while also Berard managed to join this group, trying to follow Lowe's acceleration!
Brandt/Gilanipoor went clear from the second chasing group, but are still 15" behind group Signorini/Soler/Hirt/Ochoa!
Lowe as a real threat for the GC-lead now, as he's only eight seconds down in the GC..
..and he brings it home in style: Lowe takes out this tough stage by quite a margin! This will surely be the GC-lead for him today.
+ 40" for Berard
+ 53" for Hirt, Signorini, Soler and Ochoa Quintero
Quite a showing from Lowe on the final km!
Gilanopoor next in line, about a minute behind his team mate. Brandt, Suryadi and Peterson round up today's Top-10. Novak couldn't hang on and finishes with the first bigger group eventually, losing 3'42" on Lowe.
The Aussie taking over the leader-shirt from Signorini, who might have been to aggressive with his first attack about 8km before finish. Lowe kept it cool til the final km and delivered big time: 1'01" ahead of Hirt (thanks to bonifications) and 1'05" on Signorini.
Ochoa Quintero, Soler and also Gilanipoor should still be in striking distance. Quite a nice stage for the likes of Suryadi, Berard and Brandt, who complete the Top-10 together with Peterson - for now!
In other news, several riders did not make the time limit: Kankovský, Uugunbayar and Bakari as the most notable names there.
