Volta a Catalunya - Stage 6
tsmoha
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Catalunya/MG15_Cata_6_000.png

The concluding stage features a challenging uphill finish up Montserrat and several climbs across the route. It's definitely a stage, that can make a difference.

Keizer slipped into the GC-lead yesterday and will need to defend it against some strong competition like Machado, Contador and Brajkovic in particular.

6 riders in the break of the day:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ken.png Kudus
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/afr.png Janse van Rensburg (GC's 30th, + 7.42)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bup.png Gonzalo
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/scl.png Sayar
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gnu.png Ardila Cano
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/eaf.png Txurruka

No real threat for KoM-leader Serrano, as none of those collected points so far and neither would anyone go for those four mountain sprints today..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Catalunya/MG15_Cata_6_002.jpg

Strong crosswinds (50kmh) and slicky roads make for a tough day in the saddle and we see a few crashes back in the bunch:

GC's 13th pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vtb.png Cataldo as the most notable name going down 60km before finish, while also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/boi.png Serrano went down a few minutes before. Some tough timing, as the peloton (4 minutes down on the breakaway) had just started to chase in the meantime. Cataldo is brought back by his team though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Catalunya/MG15_Cata_6_003.jpg

As we're jumping straight into the final climb (7km remaining), it's looking quite promising for the early escaping group, which still holds on to a gap more than 3 minutes! The group goes into pieces with Ardila Cano, Txurruka, Gonzalo and Kudus attacking at the bottom of the finishing climb!

In the meantime, a group of 5 riders attacked the bunch, trying (but yet failing) to bridge across the early break:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vtb.png Maillet (GC's 24th, + 6.54)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/coc.png Popovych
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/act.png Marentes
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Zingle
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbc.png Reus (GC's 15th, + 4.42)

Those five are still down by 2 minutes at this point, somewhere in between the early break and the bunch..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Catalunya/MG15_Cata_6_004.jpg

The stage will go to one of those three escapees attacking the leading group, but of course it's also about the most important GC-decisions today. A group of 9 riders went clear from the peloton about 7km before finish, catching up to Reus quickly:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/prp.png Machado
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bon.png Contador
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/aeg.png Keizer
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/onc.png Brajkovic
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mac.png Rujano
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/boi.png Marquez
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/eaf.png Valls
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ers.png Bibby
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ken.png Kwiatkowski

Most notable name missing is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/coc.png Nepomnyachsniy (GC's 5th), but also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bup.png Abal (10th) couldn't follow those moves yet!

A few moments later, Machado/Contador launch another move, yet trying to drop GC-leader Keizer! The Dutchman indeed looks in trouble now, as he struggles to hang on, while Machado/Contador - the most dangerous duo for Keizer - opens up a gap quickly!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Catalunya/MG15_Cata_6_005.jpg

2.5km to go for those GC-contenders and Contador keeps pushing it! The 3rd in GC now also tries to drop Machado, as they are only separated by ten seconds in the GC!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Catalunya/MG15_Cata_6_006.jpg

For the overview: Gonzalo got dropped by the three leaders Kudus/Cano/Txurruka, who will battle for line honours now.

Contador (+ 0.42 in the GC) and Machado (+ 0.31) caught up to Popovych and put some serious pressure on Keizer, who's already 36 seconds in arrears now! He at least managed to hang on with group Brajkovic/Rujano. Also Cataldo seems to recover well from his crash, trying to limit the damage.

No sign of Intxausti, Eastman or Kiserlovski, by the way.. while Abal is somewhere in between those chasing groups and the bunch!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Catalunya/MG15_Cata_6_007.jpg

Let's keep the stage-victory story short: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ken.png Kudus takes line honours ahead of Txurruka and Cano! A nice win for him and actually, all of those three may even go for a nice jump inside the GC's Top-20, looking at those gaps today!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Catalunya/MG15_Cata_6_008.jpg

The top-favorites will miss out on bonifications, but there's of course a chance for Contador and Machado to attack the race-lead! The Portoguese caught up to Contador inside the final km, where also Marquez managed to bridge across this duo (and Renseburg)!

Brajkovic and Kwiatkowski trying to attack group Keizer now. The GC-leader is fighting hard, but this will be a close one with still a 30"-gap between him and Machado/Contador!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Catalunya/MG15_Cata_6_009.jpg

+ 1'30" for Contador and Marquez! So there's also a gap for Machado eventually..

+ 1'45" to be precisive! So that's enough for Contador to go past Machado in the GC!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Catalunya/MG15_Cata_6_010.jpg

+ 2'02" for Rensburg, Brajkovic and Kwiatek

And here comes Keizer, who suffered on the final metres:

+ 2'27" and therefore a minute behind Contador! He finishes the stage with the same time as Bibby and Rujano, but will lose the Gc-lead!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Catalunya/MG15_Cata_6_011.jpg

A few more riders crossing the line seconds later, while there are some big names being dropped by quite a margin today:

+ 5'50" for GC's 5th Nepomnyachsniy, who clearly hadn't his best day after such a strong tour so far..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Catalunya/MG15_Cata_6_012.jpg

+ 8'55" for Abal

+ 9'18" for Antón, who finishes with the same time as the first bigger group with Kiserlovski, Eastman, Intxausti

It's pretty obvious, that the latter three more or less gave up on the GC, but Abal at least tried - though failing (again) here.. even worse: Ryan Eastman, who finishes more than 10 minutes behind Kudus, even failing to keep up with the first bunch!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Catalunya/MG15_Cata_6_013.jpg

And what a close GC-fight this was today: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bon.png Contador's small gap on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/prp.png Machado was just enough to make him win the Vuelta a Catalunya 2015! Just 4 seconds ahead of the top-favorite eventually, but somehow deserved after yesterday's stronger timetrial and today's aggressive racing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/aeg.png Keizer suffered today, dropping to 3rd in the GC, missing out on the victory by just 15 seconds (but at least winning the points competition). pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/onc.png Brajkovic 4th ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/boi.png Marquez, who did benefit from his late move and Nepomnyachsniy's troubles.

Kwiatkowski with another strong showing as 6th, ahead of Rujano, Bibby, Valls and Nepom (who drops from 5 to 10 today). Cataldo 11th ahead of those, who gained valuable minutes today: Cano, Rensburg, Maillet, Kudus, Txurruka and Reus.. Abal dropping from 10 to 18, Antón 19.. Intxausti (23rd), Kiserlovski (25th) and Eastman (34th) as the biggest disappointments.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Catalunya/MG15_Cata_6_014.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/boi.png Serrano kept his KoM-lead also today.. so even though he didn't stand a chance in the GC, he came away with a stage-win and this shirt. Good race for his team overall.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Catalunya/MG15_Cata_6_015.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ken.png Kwiatkowski best young rider, once again proving his early top-form this year. He's already proven to be a great addition for his team.
