Volta a Catalunya - Stage 5
tsmoha
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Catalunya/MG15_Cata_5_000.png

The 43km flat timetrial as the next key stage here: GC-leader Machado (74TT) and 2nd Contador (74TT) will surely fear to see Keizer (81TT) gain back his 1'19"-disadvantage on Machado. Also Brajkovic (78TT) may attack the podium, as he's about a minute behind Contador as 4th in the GC.

A few more riders will aim for the Top-10 today, with climbers like Marquez, Rujano or Antón hoping to limit the damage.. TT-specialists like Cornu or Bookwalter will aim for the stage-win, so far disappointing favorites like Intxausti or Abal could/should bounce back today.

Prologue-winner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Cornu as one of the earlier starters of the most promising riders today. The Belgain unsurprisingly sets the first notable best time!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Catalunya/MG15_Cata_5_002.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ken.png Bookwalter though looks stronger than Cornu today: and indeed, he goes past the Belgian to take the provisional lead by 17" on Cornu and 37" on Telkehaimanot! Quite a showing from the US boy.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Catalunya/MG15_Cata_5_003.jpg

With the GC's Top-10 nearing, we will focus on the big names only - so a short summary of the things so far:

Bookwalter still leading with possible contenders like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bup.png Abal (+ 1'08) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbc.png Intxausti (+ 1'44) once again failing big time. Intxausti is definitely a huge question mark here, as he's far from being competitive. Horrible performance, to say at least.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/afr.png Eastman (24th in the GC) losing 59" on Bookwalter, but at least looking good to make the Top-20 today. Same goes for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/scl.png Kiserlovski, who's 14 seconds slower than Eastman.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ers.png Bibby 52 seconds behind Bookwalter, but aiming for the Top-10 nevertheless. With guys like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/onc.png Antón losing big time (2'07 slower than Bookwalter), Bibby is likely to make a nice jump.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Catalunya/MG15_Cata_5_004.jpg

GC's 8th pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/coc.png Nepomnyachsniy is enjoying a nice race so far and he's also going strong today:

+ 29" as provisional 3rd behind Bookwalter and Cornu!

GC's 5th pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/boi.png Marquez + 1'59"
GC's 6th pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mac.png Rujano + 1'54"
GC's 7th pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ken.png Kwiatkowski + 1'41"

So that's definitely enough for Nepom to go past them all today! Also Bibby will be close to catch up to those three.. Abal may actually make the Top-10 as well, as he's still much better than Antón, Valls or Cataldo!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Catalunya/MG15_Cata_5_005.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/onc.png Brajkovic (4th in GC) now as the first rider for a long time looking capable of setting a new best time! He's a few seconds off Bookwalter's third split, but has a better final sector:

new best time indeed, beating the US boy by just 4 seconds eventually! Will he make the podium with that performance? Let's concentrate on the big three now..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/aeg.png Keizer with the clear goal to take both the stage and the GC-lead today. The Dutchman looks in shape and is the fastest at half-time, just a second ahead of Bookwalter though!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Catalunya/MG15_Cata_5_007.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bon.png Contador is down by 36 seconds at this second split. He will surely face a hard time holding off Keizer and will also need to fight against Brajkovic to keep his podium spot today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Catalunya/MG15_Cata_5_008.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/prp.png Machado with a slightly worse performance than Contador at half-time! The GC leader is already 53" slower than Keizer with still about 20km remaining..

Keizer on the way to take the stage, now about 10 seconds faster than Bookwalter at the third and final split. The fight for the GC-lead looks also in the bags, though it' of course a way to go:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Catalunya/MG15_Cata_5_010.jpg

And yes, Keizer takes both stage and the leader shirt! Finishing the stage 36" faster than 2nd Brajkovic, this was quite a showing by the top-favorite today. Contador losing 1'23" as still quite good 10th here, while Machado lost 1'50" eventually!

Keizer now leading by 31" on Machado, Contador keeping a podium spot (42 seconds) but just ten seconds ahead of Brajkovic. Today's winners: Nepomnyachsniy (5th), Bibby (8th) and Reus (15th in the GC now). Eastman going onto 17th at least. Tomorrow's challenging uphill finish to Montserrat will surely offer chances to attack here and then.
