Tirreno - Adriatico Stage 6
roturn
The penultimate day of racing brings us the queen-stage. No less than eight categorized climb are on offer, which means, if anyone is serious in going for the GC here, they'll have to perform!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Tirreno/s5prof.png

We catch today's broadcast midway through the stage, after that proeminent 2nd category climb. We have six escapees (pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/scl.png Poorseyedi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Destribois, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pum.png Heider, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mei.png Iino, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pnd.png Kennaugh and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Kratochvila)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Tirreno/s5-1.png

Having no direct competitor in this group, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Kratochvila sums KoM points wherever he can. He'll total 61 points before today's final 2 climbs. His most direct rival is actually pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pnd.png Kennaugh who's managed a total of 35.

The peloton gives these guys a lot of leeway. By the time they start climbing the last two ascents they trail by 8'45. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ork.png Orange, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png Festina and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Aker have joined forces, which may give us an idea who the favourites are for today

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Tirreno/s5-2.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pnd.png Kennaugh and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pum.png Heider have been distanced in the last descent. They are 1min behind their former companions.

The front guys punish pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Kratochvila by robbing him of the points in that penultimate KoM sprint. The czech looks exausted after sprinting for every summit today.

But more important events are happening from behind. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Andy Schleck makes the first move today!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Tirreno/s5-3.png

The pack was still 99 men strong, which makes this attack rather surprising! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Martin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tcs.png Kritskiy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vwa.png Monsalve, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png Spilak and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ork.png Sicard respond swiftly.

Back to the front, our 4 remaining escapees start climbing Monte Rotondo. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mei.png Iino has had enough of it and fires away for glory!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Tirreno/s5-4.png

Meanwhile a truce has been reached between pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Schleck, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Martin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png Spilak as they too start climbing for the final time. They have 13km ahead of them and 43'' for an 80-rider peloton commanded by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ork.png Sicard (who had been caught along with the rest of the attackers)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Tirreno/s5-5.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Schleck attacks again, trying to get rid of his opponents. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png Spilak counters, but there's little reaction from the race leader!!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Tirreno/s5-6.png

The peloton finally starts breaking up with 11km to go. A first split of 40 riders happens, but these are mainly domestiques. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ork.png Sicard continues to lay down the tempo, but the gap is widening to more than 1min!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Martin eventually catches his 2 rivals in an easier section, as they have started to find the early escapees down the road.

Speaking of which, we have news that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mei.png Iino continues to press forward and also has got himself a gap of 1min to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Destribois with 7km to the finish.

For kms things stay as they are, but guess who, yes it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Schleck again who tries to make something out of this stage. The Luxembourgian looks like he has Vesuvio's lava running on his veins! He's been the sole favourite to try anything at all today!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Tirreno/s5-7.png

But the hero of the day comes from Japan. His name is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mei.png Iino, and he's a new national hero. Congrats Meiji!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Tirreno/s5-8.png

Our three attackers continue their feud as they enter the final 3kms, but the stage has been a disappointment really. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Martin is losing 26'', but that doesn't put him in any sort of danger. In the chasing group, everyone is either too tired or too afraid to do something...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mus.png Fothen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pnd.png Kohl lose contact, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vwa.png Denifl gives a hand to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ork.png Sicard in the chasing duty.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Martin bridges up yet again to his two rivals here, as they enter the final km. There's a meaningless sprint to be disputed now...

...where the Irish actually manages to upset the other two. Oh boy.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Tirreno/s5-9.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ork.png Sicard decides to unleash all his power in the final km, but that will hardly award him a pat in the back from CrueTrue. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Alarcon and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vwa.png Denifl complete the top10. The rest of the group finishes with the same time (more or less).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Tirreno/s5-10.png

TL;DR: Break attacked, pack didn't give a shit. Schleck tried to do something. Spilak and Martin followed. Nothing happened.

Also, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pro.png Stancu abandoned due to a mid-stage irrelevant crash (well not that irrelevant)

So, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Martin defend his lead and will face the last stage, victorious. Unless something crappy happens. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png Spilak and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ork.png Sicard secure podium spots, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Schleck only manages 5th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Kratochvila wins the KoM competition, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Martin also holds the Points rankings ahead of the final stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pnd.png Pendelton's sees themselves up to the front of the Teams rankings. Also their wonderkid, Dombrowski, dethrones his countryman, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mus.png Warbasse to take the U25 competition.
