We're heading for the most challenging of the three first stages. Another hilly parcours, featuring two Cat1-climbs. Again a rather long way down to a flat finish though.
Zielinski took the GC-lead thanks to his breakaway effort yesterday and he's surely amongst the better puncheurs here. Will his team deny another breakaway win today? Will Lejman or other strong puncheurs bounce back here?
One of those puncheurs failing yesterday is amongst 3 riders being allowed to go clear after the first climb:
Khalilikhosroshani
Squire
Schoffmann
will build the break of the day. That said, Schoffmann actually wouldn't, as he's dropped by the other two already at their first mountain sprint! So it's again a duo eventually.
This duo would stay in the lead when entering the final downhill sector, holding on to a 2-minutes-gap with then 27km remaining. The two fought hard for the three mountain sprints, with a narrow "winner" eventually:
KoM Squire 38 Khalilikhosroshani 36 Jonasson 16
The peloton though looks stronger than yesterday and kept chasing hard on the descend: 13km before finish, teams like Alpina, Fablok and In-n-Out narrow the gap to just 30" - with the leading duo already suffering from their efforts today..
And yes, just a few moments later, the duo is reeled in and Godoy goes clear from the bunch (57 riders left) with a strong kick!
The Argentinian fights hard to maintain a rather small gap til the finish, but he's looking quite exhausted when he enters the final km! The bunch would keep chasing and with a rather chaotic bunch sprint kicking off now, it looks like a tough challenge for Godoy!
He came close, but it ain't enough for line honours: Godoy is swallowed by today's fastest finishers a few hundred metres before the finish:
His teammate Weber had a strong kick, leading with the line approaching!
Sonnery fighting to hang on, while race-leader Zielinski moves forward with some great speed now!
Hirt and Dyachenko in the mix, too...
But it's Zielinski again! What a fast finish he had there, denying Weber the line honours on the final few metres! Hirt lungs in for a strong 3rd ahead of Sonnery, who lost some speed on the final metres.
Godoy 7th eventually..
And Zielinski growing his GC-lead, now 46" ahead of Weber/Proni and 50" on Hirt. The next stage may suit him as much as today's, so going for a third consecutive win looks actually quite possible for him!
