A rather short stage may already be something like the queen stage here: featuring several climbs and a long (15km) summit finish, today's the day where the climbers need to deliver. Especially those, who ain't the strongest against the clock (or in hilly stages).

Machado, Contador, Intxausti as the top-favorites for a stage like today's, but of course we do have several threats like yesterday's 3rd Keizer or Brajkovic, Rujano and Abal.

A breakaway group is quickly built and we do have some interesting names here:

Olivier as the best climber, Kashechkin and Reus as the most notable names. We might have seen some tactical moves with teams like RBC (Intxausti), Buff (Contador), Rothaus (Keizer) or BOI (Marquez) possibly sending a decent domestique into this leading group..

We're jumping straight into the final climb, but first taking a look at the current situation of course. Serrano would take the provisional polka dot lead:

The breakaway would enter the final climb (now just 13km to go) with still a comfortable gap: 3'33" on the bunch (88 riders)! Crosswinds with up to 65kmh might be the reason for a tough challenge to chase this strong group..

In the meantime, a few riders attacked the peloton, yet struggling to bridge across the early break though:

Kashechkin and Serrano now trying to shake off the remaining escapees, where Prades was the first being dropped early into this climb!

It's about time for the top-favorites to do something with now just 5km remaining and their disadvantage on the race leaders being still around 2'30"!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/boi.png Marquez was the first big gun to launch an attack, quickly going past group Agudelo/Morabito, facing a 1'40"-gap on the very front though..

A few more riders would of course try to jump behind him and it's a pretty chaotic overall picture at this point:

For an overview then: Serrano/Kashechkin indeed managed to drop Olivier/Reus/Izagirre, who are now accompanied by Marquez and Maillet/Rujano. The latter as the only top-favorite to hang on with Marquez so far!

A next group with 8 riders has been built, with Machado, Contador, Keizer and Brajkovic as the expected names there..

Quite notable names being dropped though: Abal 50" behind group Machado with now just 4km to go for those groups! Intxausti, Eastman and Kiserlovski even worse, as they found themselves almost two minutes behind Machado!

Serrano opened up a small gap on Kashechkin and already enters the final 2km now! Will he fool the big guns today?

Group Machado/Contador caught up to Group Marquez/Rujano in the meantime, making it a 9-men-chasing group.. Reus and Olivier now struggling to hang on there.

One minute advantage for Serrano.. the top-favorites may miss out on the stage, but fight hard to limit the damage.

Abal still a minute behind group Machado and also Intxausti/Kiserlovski ain't looking as they would recover from their bad climbing so far!

What looked like a tactical move, ends with a huge win for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/boi.png Serrano! The climber maintained his lead til the finish, even though the gap became smaller and smaller in those final 2km. Huge victory for himself and quite a showing from Bank of Ireland, too.

+ 19" for the next group of top-favorites, which swallowed Kashechkin close to the line..

Serrano takes the GC-lead with 20" on Machado and 22" on Keizer. What a special day for the Spaniard. We may expect him to struggle in both the hilly stages and timetrial though. It will be interesting to see, how his team handles this situation with also Marquez (5th) going strong in the GC so far.
