The Tour of the Middle East kicks off with three consecutive hilly stages: today's 155km parcours features a flat finish (like all of those three first stages), but three short climbs in the final 20-30km may see some good action already.
Hard to say, who will already attack today, but one thing should be certain: a puncheur like Lejman, Acevedo, Godoy or Khalilikhosroshani should aim for those early opportunities to shine here!
It took a few attempts until we got the break of the day: a 2-men-group (previously three, but Lozano already got dropped at the first intermediate sprint) will set agenda for most of today's racing. It's an interesting group:
Proni
Zielinski
So two quite solid puncheurs going clear, with Zielinski as a strong finisher as well. It's therefore no surprise, that he takes the first two intermediate sprinters (for 12 bonus seconds) quite easily!
The duo also reaches the final intermediate (28km before finish) still as the race leaders, with their advantage at 1'50" and the first climbs ahead now.
Zielinski also taking this sprint easily, so collecting 18 bonus seconds - Proni 12.. will this be enough of a gap to also go for line honours?
The peloton chases hard now and at the bottom of today's longest climb (still a rather short one), it's mostly In-n-Out setting the pace and cutting the gap to 30" now. It's something like 12km to go and the chase is on full-mode..
The bunch, however, struggles a bit on this climb, where Zielinski drops Proni to take the only mountain sprint as well! Zielinski's advantage grows back to 45" on the peloton with now less than 10km remaining!
A last short speedbump (4km before finish) and Zielinski's still leading solo by 46" on the peloton, where we see a major split now (26 riders in the leading bunch)!
Uchima now launching a late move, going past Proni easily. The Italian will be swallowed by the first peloton soon.
No one else trying to follow, so we won't see the biggest GC-contenders attacking today..
Zielinski won't care, as he benefits from the peloton failing to catch him in time. It's a rather close victory eventually, but he crosses the line as first ahead of Uchima. In addition to all those bonifications, it doesn't really matter, that also the chasing group is given the same finish-time eventually.
Bole completes the podium there, beating a strong Lowe and Delage.
The next bigger group loses 1'41" then: most notable names may be
Roe
Berard
Brandt
Peterson
Khalilikhosroshani
Koep
Ndbri
Kahlili as the biggest (or only real) surprise there, as he was considered a favorite for those hilly stages.
