After yesterday's day on the hills, we return to flat terrain for the final stage of the race. On the previous flat stages, one was a bunch sprint and another was taken by a break. The sprinters teams will be hoping we don't see a repeat of stage 3's successful attack, with Ciolek being the favourite along with Cavendish and Avelino today. They do need to watch out for the final kilometre though, which has a gradient averaging around 5%.
The first seven riders to attack are those that form the breakaway, with no form of chase from the peloton. Those involved in the move are:
Porte
Rybakov
Thurau
Egger
Robov
Hollenstein
Balloni
The first two mountain sprints of the day are both taken by Thurau, moving the German onto 20 points in that competition. With another checkpoint later in the day, he can pass leader Phelan with a win and equal him with 2nd place. Rybakov manages to grab a 2nd and a 3rd place to move himself up as well and a win will also give him the competition.
Current Mountain Standings

As the weather takes a turn for the worse the peloton begins to chase, with Gazelle working on the front for race leader Koren. 60 kilometres of this race remain, and with the gap at around 4 minutes it's not looking like another successful breakaway today.
At the final mountain sprint Thurau manages to take maximum points, and consequently the Mountains competition as he moves ahead of Phelan by 2 points in the end. Rybakov gets another 2nd place, enough to move him onto the same points as the Australian in 2nd.
The gap currently sits at 45 seconds as the final 10 kilometres move closer, so this group is well in the peloton's sights.
Final Mountain Standings
1 Bjorn Thurau30 2 Adam Phelan28 2 Alexandr Rybakov28
However, after passing through the final intermediate sprint, for some reason the peloton decides to sit up. TomTom, who were on the front suddenly decide to stop chasing, and no-one else comes to the front to continue the chase of the attackers.
This is great news for the break, who's gap suddenly jumps to over a minute once again. Very disappointing for the sprinter's teams though.
The gap continues to grow to 1'30" as the escapees enter the final 10 kilometres. It looks like they will get to contest the victory today, unless the bunch can gather a chase very quickly.
5 kilometres later we see the first attack from this group as the focus shifts from staying away to beating each other. Hollenstein is the rider on the attack, followed by Thurau.
With just 3 kilometres remaining, Hollenstein and Thurau have a gap! Behind them Porte is trying to cross the gap, while the other four riders are seemingly waiting for the sprint.
Starting his sprint early, Porte manages to catch the two leaders and his move surprises them, as the Australian moves past into the lead!
Into the final kilometre now, the riders have hit the final gradient up to the finish. It's a three-way battle for victory, as Hollenstein and Thurau have closed the gap to Porte, who remains just in the lead.
It's Porte who is the strongest, who found some extra energy in the final few metres to hold off Thurau and then Hollenstein, who finish second and third respectively. The German does win the mountains coompetition though as a consolation, and his 32 points gained today in sprints and at the finish could challenge for that competition as well.
Balloni, Rybakov, Robov and Egger finish 4th to 7th in that order.
The peloton sprint is a mess as all riders decide to start their sprint at the same time. To win the points competition, Ciolek needs to finish 14th or higher today, but it's team-mate Bar leading the sprint for 8th at the moment.
It is Bar who is 8th, with Vantomme and Felline rounding off the top 10.
Strangely, despite having two team-mates in the top 10 Ciolek can only finish 18th. The other points leader Reguigui didn't gain any points either today so therefore both lose the points competition to Thurau, who takes both the points and mountain competitions due to his efforts today.
In the overall, Koren easily retained the GC after finishing 14th and takes away a great victory here for his new team Gazelle.
