Bayern Rundfahrt - Stage 4
FroomeDog99
i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/Bayern/9d0da7e2-93b3-45f2-9485-6b79c5057214.jpg

Stage 4 is the queen stage of the race, and we should definitely see a decisive day in the GC, with plenty of puncheurs looking to make up ground they lost in the TT. Among these riders, who are expected to do best today on the tough final climb are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pum.png Kelderman, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/prp.png Costa and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/evo.png Sanchez Gil.

Forming the breakaway today are:

KoM leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ozc.png Phelan
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/aeg.png Pauwels
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/qst.png Serry
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vwa.png Fernandez
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tom.png Bulgac
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sbp.png Jensen
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Wallays
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/yas.png Dennis
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pum.png Bevin
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gzl.png Konrad

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/Bayern/3675f7b5-f97e-4656-93a4-465b2b1c9056.png

The first mountain sprint is won by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vwa.png Fernandez, before polka-dot jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ozc.png Phelan takes the second point to reaffirm his lead in the competition, although it isn't unassailable and he can still be passed tomorrow.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/Bayern/1c19f29d-c530-4ef9-9c5e-a2f5e1da8b9a.png

The Australian is also the winner at two intermediate sprints, with the other sprint point going to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pum.png Bevin.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/Bayern/06d5bcd9-73c0-4a5b-81da-c9c64709e965.png

This group never gets a big enough gap though, and is reeled in by Evonik with 25 kilometres to go, who are controlling the tempo for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/evo.png Sanchez Gil, who must be feeling good today.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/Bayern/79f402a1-0fc8-4299-87fd-45487710772c.png

The peleton remains together until the penultimate climb, where with 12 kilometres to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ozc.png Visconti puts in an attack, creating a 35 second gap back to the peloton.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/Bayern/38bdb206-458b-4a93-9a12-963a0932a287.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ozc.png Visconti impressively manages to hold that gap for the next few kilometres, and with 5 kilometres to go he is keeping the peloton at bay with no favourites attacking currently. Surely they have to make a move soon?

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/Bayern/49f69ff3-945d-4934-8a6b-b084c6160c83.png

There is a move with 5 kilometres left for the peloton. It's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/evo.png Sanchez Gil who attacks from a slow-moving peloton, followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ers.png Bibby.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/Bayern/4a5bf7df-c67e-4744-860b-a6582fd9ba70.png

Joining them is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pum.png Kelderman, who crosses the gap to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ers.png Bibby. However, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/evo.png Sanchez Gil has already dropped the Brit behind and is heading up the road in pursuit of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ozc.png Visconti.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/Bayern/5fb8b00c-66f0-4e34-8057-c440c017fc7f.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ozc.png Visconti remains in the lead, with a gap of 30 seconds back to closest chaser pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/evo.png Sanchez Gil who has a gap of a further 40 seconds back to the peloton, who have sat up and are not putting up a chase, which could be good news for the attackers GC hopes.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/Bayern/48ae5a91-9435-4643-b6cc-be081fccc56c.png

Realising that the peloton is not chasing, third overall pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gzl.png Koren decides to attack as well in an attempt to maintain or even improve his high overall position.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/Bayern/c7947848-ffbb-49b5-bb4a-b9f09a561ac2.png

Next to attack is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/amx.png Boswell, who is currently in 5th overall after his breakaway yesterday and another rider looking to hold onto an already good GC position.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/Bayern/67577adf-e8fc-4528-95fc-0169e6f8dbb0.png

Remaining the best placed of the favourites on the climb is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/evo.png Sanchez Gil, who is still trying to close the gap to leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ozc.png Visconti with 3 kilometres to go. The situation on the road:

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/Bayern/9bbe0626-9b13-4610-be4f-953cab27aa55.png

So pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ozc.png Visconti remains in the lead with just 2 kilometres left. Could this be a surprise win for the Italian? pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/evo.png Sanchez Gil is now catching him quickly, with the advantage now only 15 seconds.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/Bayern/d78684e1-0e81-42cd-a4cc-bdd3fe5ced0d.png

600 metres later pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/evo.png Sanchez Gil passes the tiring pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ozc.png Visconti, and immediately drops the Oz Cycling man! It's looking good for the Spaniard now for the stage win.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/Bayern/a51d1a2b-4367-4c2d-a8e1-a5ffe9fc887e.png

Behind that battle, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pum.png Kelderman has now been dropped by the surprisingly stronger pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ers.png Bibby, who sets off in pursuit of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ozc.png Visconti.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/Bayern/84de9689-9def-4361-847b-d3cfcc0ad617.png

The peloton is nearly 3 minutes down once someone finally increases the pace, which is surprisingly pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ers.png Lahsaini considering pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ers.png Bibby is already up the road for them. Surely too little too late for those in the bunch now though, including favourite pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/prp.png Costa who is having a poor day by his standards.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/Bayern/264bfa42-93de-435a-a119-600df8e604c0.png

It's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/evo.png Sanchez Gil though who's going for victory here and is now within the final kilometre. To lead the GC, the Spaniard needs 54 seconds on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ers.png Bibby, 1'51" on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gzl.png Koren and 2'21" on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/kar.png Fiedler who remains in the peloton.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/Bayern/1560e953-47fe-4f4c-919b-55fe9118446d.png

One of those riders in contention for the GC is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gzl.png Koren, who has done a great job here and is only a minute back on the leader currently. He is just behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pum.png Kelderman, with a bit of a gap ahead to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ers.png Bibby who has now caught pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ozc.png Visconti.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/Bayern/5f98f48c-0fd6-4535-860c-0cf750bd68ff.png

Winning the stage today though is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/evo.png Sanchez Gil, who was definitely the strongest today on the final climb and is rewarded with a stage win for PCT newcomers Evonik. He'll now have to wait and see if it'll be enough to move into the GC lead.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/Bayern/a404a561-62bc-402c-acf5-8b34b1c3d61b.png

31 seconds later pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ers.png Bibby leads home pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ozc.png Visconti to finish second today. That's enough to keep him ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/evo.png Sanchez Gil in the overall standings by just 15 seconds!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ozc.png Visconti has to settle for third in the end after at one point looking like the win was possible. It's still a very good unexpected result for the Italian, who will probably make it into the GC top-5.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/Bayern/b28fca95-1186-4e32-a34d-48828e356e61.png

Finishing fourth is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pum.png Kelderman, who wasn't as strong as expected on the final climb. He will still manage a top-10 overall though thanks to his efforts today.

Right behind him is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gzl.png Koren, who finishes 13 seconds down on the Dutchman and 1'06" down on the winner. That all means that the Slovenian will move into the GC lead by 10 seconds ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ers.png Bibby, thanks to an unexpected excellent performance on the final climb!

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/Bayern/76e281cc-bf66-4517-b12a-b39846e6ce18.png

Then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/amx.png Boswell crosses the line, nearly 2 minutes down. That combined with yesterday's breakaway should be enough to see the American into the top-5 GC though, so a good result for him as well.

The peloton then comes in, lead home by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gzl.png Kangert who actually gaps the field with an impressive sprint. Behind him pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/prp.png Oliveira, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/qst.png Goos and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rge.png Vink round off the top 10, with the peloton finishing 3'01" down.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/Bayern/369d0ef9-3c55-497b-b323-97e3cf0f7f10.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/kar.png Fiedler was gapped in the sprint, along with a large chunk of the peloton, finishing 3'44" behind the winner but in the end it doesn't matter, as he would have lost his jersey anyway.

As said, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gzl.png Koren now moves into the lead with just one flat stage remaining, so barring a crash the Slovenian looks set for an overall victory here. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ers.png Bibby sits in second place, with today's winner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/evo.png Sanchez Gil in third.
