Stage 4 is the queen stage of the race, and we should definitely see a decisive day in the GC, with plenty of puncheurs looking to make up ground they lost in the TT. Among these riders, who are expected to do best today on the tough final climb are Kelderman, Costa and Sanchez Gil.
Forming the breakaway today are:
KoM leader Phelan
Pauwels
Serry
Fernandez
Bulgac
Jensen
Wallays
Dennis
Bevin
Konrad
The first mountain sprint is won by Fernandez, before polka-dot jersey Phelan takes the second point to reaffirm his lead in the competition, although it isn't unassailable and he can still be passed tomorrow.
The Australian is also the winner at two intermediate sprints, with the other sprint point going to Bevin.
This group never gets a big enough gap though, and is reeled in by Evonik with 25 kilometres to go, who are controlling the tempo for Sanchez Gil, who must be feeling good today.
The peleton remains together until the penultimate climb, where with 12 kilometres to go Visconti puts in an attack, creating a 35 second gap back to the peloton.
Visconti impressively manages to hold that gap for the next few kilometres, and with 5 kilometres to go he is keeping the peloton at bay with no favourites attacking currently. Surely they have to make a move soon?
There is a move with 5 kilometres left for the peloton. It's Sanchez Gil who attacks from a slow-moving peloton, followed by Bibby.
Joining them is Kelderman, who crosses the gap to Bibby. However, Sanchez Gil has already dropped the Brit behind and is heading up the road in pursuit of Visconti.
Visconti remains in the lead, with a gap of 30 seconds back to closest chaser Sanchez Gil who has a gap of a further 40 seconds back to the peloton, who have sat up and are not putting up a chase, which could be good news for the attackers GC hopes.
Realising that the peloton is not chasing, third overall Koren decides to attack as well in an attempt to maintain or even improve his high overall position.
Next to attack is Boswell, who is currently in 5th overall after his breakaway yesterday and another rider looking to hold onto an already good GC position.
Remaining the best placed of the favourites on the climb is Sanchez Gil, who is still trying to close the gap to leader Visconti with 3 kilometres to go. The situation on the road:
2'19" 1'46" 1'22" 40" Peloton 33" Boswell 24" Koren 42" Kelderman 18" Sanchez Gil 22" Visconti Fiedler Bibby Costa Kangert Levarlet
So Visconti remains in the lead with just 2 kilometres left. Could this be a surprise win for the Italian? Sanchez Gil is now catching him quickly, with the advantage now only 15 seconds.
600 metres later Sanchez Gil passes the tiring Visconti, and immediately drops the Oz Cycling man! It's looking good for the Spaniard now for the stage win.
Behind that battle, Kelderman has now been dropped by the surprisingly stronger Bibby, who sets off in pursuit of Visconti.
The peloton is nearly 3 minutes down once someone finally increases the pace, which is surprisingly Lahsaini considering Bibby is already up the road for them. Surely too little too late for those in the bunch now though, including favourite Costa who is having a poor day by his standards.
It's Sanchez Gil though who's going for victory here and is now within the final kilometre. To lead the GC, the Spaniard needs 54 seconds on Bibby, 1'51" on Koren and 2'21" on Fiedler who remains in the peloton.
One of those riders in contention for the GC is Koren, who has done a great job here and is only a minute back on the leader currently. He is just behind Kelderman, with a bit of a gap ahead to Bibby who has now caught Visconti.
Winning the stage today though is Sanchez Gil, who was definitely the strongest today on the final climb and is rewarded with a stage win for PCT newcomers Evonik. He'll now have to wait and see if it'll be enough to move into the GC lead.
31 seconds later Bibby leads home Visconti to finish second today. That's enough to keep him ahead of Sanchez Gil in the overall standings by just 15 seconds!
Visconti has to settle for third in the end after at one point looking like the win was possible. It's still a very good unexpected result for the Italian, who will probably make it into the GC top-5.
Finishing fourth is Kelderman, who wasn't as strong as expected on the final climb. He will still manage a top-10 overall though thanks to his efforts today.
Right behind him is Koren, who finishes 13 seconds down on the Dutchman and 1'06" down on the winner. That all means that the Slovenian will move into the GC lead by 10 seconds ahead of Bibby, thanks to an unexpected excellent performance on the final climb!
Then Boswell crosses the line, nearly 2 minutes down. That combined with yesterday's breakaway should be enough to see the American into the top-5 GC though, so a good result for him as well.
The peloton then comes in, lead home by Kangert who actually gaps the field with an impressive sprint. Behind him Oliveira, Goos and Vink round off the top 10, with the peloton finishing 3'01" down.
Fiedler was gapped in the sprint, along with a large chunk of the peloton, finishing 3'44" behind the winner but in the end it doesn't matter, as he would have lost his jersey anyway.
As said, Koren now moves into the lead with just one flat stage remaining, so barring a crash the Slovenian looks set for an overall victory here. Bibby sits in second place, with today's winner Sanchez Gil in third.
