We now move onto the third stage of the race. Much like the first stage, it is a flat stage that apart from some early hills should be for the sprinters. Stage 1 winner Ciolek is the obvious favourite along with other top sprinters Vantomme and Cavendish.
The first attacks soon start with 10-rider group going off the front:
Chernetskiy
Afonso
Reguigui
Schlechter
Pellaud
Vink
Minnard
Boswell
Bablidze
Semple
Quite surprising to see Boswell in there considering he could still get a good GC tomorrow, being under 3 mins down on the race lead. The peloton happily let him go up the road though.
The first of two 2nd category climbs is won by Semple, before Vink takes the second. It's Semple then who gains the most points today, his 16 points putting him 2 behind leader Phelan who keeps his jersey for another day.
There are then 3 sprint points passed by this group over the day, which are all won by Algerian Reguigui. Who increases his lead as the best placed rider in the overall in this group.
The escapees soon reach 20 kilometres to go, and they have a gap of over 2'30". That will take some closing with so many riders in this group, and the sprinters may not get another bunch sprint today unless their teams start cutting the gap quickly.
They don't give chase though, leaving Karcher to regulate the gap as they protect Fiedler's lead. With Reguigui just 2'17" behind him in the GC now including bonus seconds, they must be careful.
With the attackers entering the final 10 kilometres and the gap being still over 2 minutes, in all probability they will stay away until the finish and can now fight for the win.
Not being the best sprinter in the group, Afonso sees an opportunity go solo and attacks away from the break!
It's not looking good for the nine riders left behind by the Portuguese, with the gap continuing to increase. They could be fighting for second place very soon if they don't start closing the advantage.
The gap has grown to 40 seconds as Afonso moves into the final 4 kilometres, it's looking like he won't be caught!
Back in the peloton Karcher remain on the front, trying to limit the break's gap to under 2 minutes. Behind them Ciolek has moved into a good position but he will be sprinting for minor placings today, along with the other big sprinters.
Seeing that the group is not co-operating, more riders decide to attack from the group. Chernetskiy's attack is followed by Minnard, as the riders behind prepare for a sprint.
No-one will catch Afonso though, who is now inside the final kilometre as the sprint opens up behind him.
Chernetskiy and Minnard's attack has given them an advantage in the battle for the podium places. Reguigui leads from the rest of the group.
It's Afonso who wins stage 3! The Portuguese attacked at the perfect time from his fellow escapees and claims a great solo victory here for Prio.
Minnard has now moved into pole position in the battle for second. Chernetskiy is trying to hold off the rest of the group, with Schlechter moving through quickly.
It is Minnard who easily beats Chernetskiy to second place, but both will be very happy with unexpected podium finishes today.
The top 5 is rounded off by Schlechter and Reguigui, the latter of which now moves into contention in the points competition because of his efforts today which give him 30 points. How high he moves in the GC is yet to be seen.
Completing the top 10 is Vink, Bablidze, Pellaud, Semple and Boswell.
Winning the peloton's sprint for 11th place is Ciolek, ahead of Krieger and Farrar.
The bunch finishes 2'25" behind winner Afonso, and more importantly 1'56" behind the rest of the attackers. That means Fiedler retains his overall lead but Reguigui moves into second place in the standings, 21 seconds behind the German.
Also moving into the top 5 is Boswell, who should now be a real threat for the overall with him being one of the contenders for tomorrow's hilly stage.
