Bayern Rundfahrt - Stage 3
FroomeDog99
i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/Bayern/7e0204a3-0ffc-4648-a51d-287d56afb279.jpg

We now move onto the third stage of the race. Much like the first stage, it is a flat stage that apart from some early hills should be for the sprinters. Stage 1 winner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pum.png Ciolek is the obvious favourite along with other top sprinters pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tom.png Vantomme and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/esc.png Cavendish.

The first attacks soon start with 10-rider group going off the front:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tcs.png Chernetskiy
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/prp.png Afonso
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ers.png Reguigui
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Schlechter
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vtb.png Pellaud
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rge.png Vink
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gzl.png Minnard
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/amx.png Boswell
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/btc.png Bablidze
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/yas.png Semple

Quite surprising to see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/amx.png Boswell in there considering he could still get a good GC tomorrow, being under 3 mins down on the race lead. The peloton happily let him go up the road though.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/Bayern/67644f00-0023-414e-b4af-c43ca7a8ff35.png

The first of two 2nd category climbs is won by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/yas.png Semple, before pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rge.png Vink takes the second. It's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/yas.png Semple then who gains the most points today, his 16 points putting him 2 behind leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ozc.png Phelan who keeps his jersey for another day.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/Bayern/6f666006-0014-427c-87b6-52aef6f5cc3b.png

There are then 3 sprint points passed by this group over the day, which are all won by Algerian pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ers.png Reguigui. Who increases his lead as the best placed rider in the overall in this group.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/Bayern/3d551847-a1a5-4aaa-97f8-1de6de283574.png

The escapees soon reach 20 kilometres to go, and they have a gap of over 2'30". That will take some closing with so many riders in this group, and the sprinters may not get another bunch sprint today unless their teams start cutting the gap quickly.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/Bayern/d65ede16-7f1c-4964-9545-f064c29ba68d.png

They don't give chase though, leaving Karcher to regulate the gap as they protect pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/kar.png Fiedler's lead. With pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ers.png Reguigui just 2'17" behind him in the GC now including bonus seconds, they must be careful.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/Bayern/b8709a60-e172-4362-ba2c-2d0a500ace9d.png

With the attackers entering the final 10 kilometres and the gap being still over 2 minutes, in all probability they will stay away until the finish and can now fight for the win.

Not being the best sprinter in the group, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/prp.png Afonso sees an opportunity go solo and attacks away from the break!

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/Bayern/3d92367b-42fa-442b-97f5-69ca5e3f33b3.png

It's not looking good for the nine riders left behind by the Portuguese, with the gap continuing to increase. They could be fighting for second place very soon if they don't start closing the advantage.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/Bayern/48b6ee06-c372-422b-b952-595820d8ebfc.png

The gap has grown to 40 seconds as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/prp.png Afonso moves into the final 4 kilometres, it's looking like he won't be caught!

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/Bayern/aa95d65b-ece2-4449-8e55-8f1d41001b21.png

Back in the peloton Karcher remain on the front, trying to limit the break's gap to under 2 minutes. Behind them pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pum.png Ciolek has moved into a good position but he will be sprinting for minor placings today, along with the other big sprinters.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/Bayern/be29496b-2d02-4091-b258-96812ea00f11.png

Seeing that the group is not co-operating, more riders decide to attack from the group. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tcs.png Chernetskiy's attack is followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gzl.png Minnard, as the riders behind prepare for a sprint.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/Bayern/44d686fd-8398-44db-aff1-6e81b67adf4d.png

No-one will catch pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/prp.png Afonso though, who is now inside the final kilometre as the sprint opens up behind him.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/Bayern/6f8dc646-ece1-4fcc-9083-40f62937e3a7.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tcs.png Chernetskiy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gzl.png Minnard's attack has given them an advantage in the battle for the podium places. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ers.png Reguigui leads from the rest of the group.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/Bayern/75dd1a97-bd2c-41f1-849a-fa276ac5d276.png

It's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/prp.png Afonso who wins stage 3! The Portuguese attacked at the perfect time from his fellow escapees and claims a great solo victory here for Prio.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/Bayern/fd1c71b5-250a-4600-a03f-d32397a8e116.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gzl.png Minnard has now moved into pole position in the battle for second. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tcs.png Chernetskiy is trying to hold off the rest of the group, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Schlechter moving through quickly.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/Bayern/a31ccc58-6c07-4912-8d51-051ed3f77d2c.png

It is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gzl.png Minnard who easily beats pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tcs.png Chernetskiy to second place, but both will be very happy with unexpected podium finishes today.

The top 5 is rounded off by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Schlechter and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ers.png Reguigui, the latter of which now moves into contention in the points competition because of his efforts today which give him 30 points. How high he moves in the GC is yet to be seen.

Completing the top 10 is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rge.png Vink, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/btc.png Bablidze, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vtb.png Pellaud, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/yas.png Semple and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/amx.png Boswell.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/Bayern/480d7d2c-8195-41c6-b7c2-e384602ee118.png

Winning the peloton's sprint for 11th place is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pum.png Ciolek, ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/aeg.png Krieger and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/azt.png Farrar.

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/Bayern/3ab14a4d-7c45-4b2e-ba5a-4aac0b4e41c4.png

The bunch finishes 2'25" behind winner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/prp.png Afonso, and more importantly 1'56" behind the rest of the attackers. That means pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/kar.png Fiedler retains his overall lead but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ers.png Reguigui moves into second place in the standings, 21 seconds behind the German.

Also moving into the top 5 is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/amx.png Boswell, who should now be a real threat for the overall with him being one of the contenders for tomorrow's hilly stage.
