Stage 2 of the race is a time-trial, the perfect chance for those strong against the clock to challenge for a stage win and move up in the overall standings ahead of stage 4's hills. The favourites are top class time-trialists such as Fiedler, Cornu and Schädlich.
The best early time is set by Balloni, who finishes in a time of 33'36". We'll have to see how that holds up over the day.
Soon out on course though is Schädlich, one of the favourites, and he easily beats Balloni's time, stopping the clock on 32'54". That's a big 40 second advance on the previous leading time, and will be tough to beat.
A rider who could do well in the GC here is Reus, who combines great TT power with a decent climbing ability. The Dutchman doesn't have the best ride today though, finishing in 33'51", almost a minute behind the leading time and putting him down in 5th provisionally with plenty of riders to come.
A surprisingly good time comes from Schär, who's time of 33'29" puts him in 2nd place for the moment.
Then Kangert comes out on course, who could be an overall threat, being equally strong on both the hills and in TT's. His time of 33'56" won't threaten for the top places today though, as he is 1'25" down on Schädlich's lead.
Next big rider to set a time is Stannard, who finishes in 33'32", 38 seconds down on the leader. That slots him in behind Schär but ahead of Balloni into 3rd.
That means with 50 riders left to come the current standings are:
1 Lucas Schädlich32'54" 2 Michael Schär+ 35 3 Ian Stannard+ 38 4 Alfredo Balloni+ 42 5 Nelson Oliveira+ 48
Another rider capable of challenging for a high overall place is Koren. Time-trialling is his best discipline though, and that shows - a time of 33'01" is very impressive and puts him into second comfortably just 7 seconds behind the lead.
Then comes the big favourite, with Fiedler setting a time now. The German world-class in this discipline and it shows, with him setting a new leading time of 32'31", 23 seconds quicker than Schädlich! That will be very tough to beat.
It's then two TomTom riders who set competitive times in quick succession, with Elijzen surprisingly beating the usually superior Van Winden. The latter slots in a little lower down in 7th than Elijzen, who's time of 33'32" puts him into 4th!
Then we have one of the best puncheurs in the race in Kelderman. As expected he is pretty far down though, finishing 2'29" back on the lead. Plenty of time to make up for him for a good overall finish.
Then we have perhaps the final threat to Fiedler's time, with Belgian champion Cornu setting a time. It's disappointment for him though, finishing a over a minute down on the German with a time of 33'44", meaning he is only just in the top 10. Definitely not what his team Bpost wanted.
We now see some more GC contenders set times with Bibby finishing 1'27" behind the lead, leaving him decently placed for a high overall position once again here.
Another of these is Sanchez Gil, who doesn't do as well as the Brit, finishing a disappointing 2'21" down, out of the top 50 today. That leaves him a tough task going into the hilly stage to get a good GC.
The last major rider to set a time before the sprinters is Costa, one of the best puncheurs here and once again a rider who could challenge for the GC. He disappoints as well though, finishing over 2 minutes down as well in a time of 34'41".
Last rider out on course is yellow jersey Ciolek who attempts to save his race lead. Unsurprisingly though he's nowhere near Fiedler's time, finishing nearly 4 minutes down.
That means Fielder not only takes the stage but also the race lead. Schädlich takes a strong second place which he will be happy with, while Koren takes the final podium spot today for Gazelle and he is the best of these three on the hills.
In the GC fight, the likes of Kangert and Bibby look best placed to challenge for a high overall placing. Better puncheurs such as Kelderman, Sanchez Gil and Costa all have work to do to try and make up the ground lost today.
