After yesterday's only mountain stage, we still have to possible key stages to come: today's hilly parcours will offer the stronger puncheurs a chance to gain back time in the GC.

Rujano destroyed the other favorites with a late attack yesterday and wants to maintain a comfortable gap for yellow. One of those allrounders though did quite well, too: Kwiatkowski sits on 3rd in the GC and is expected to be one of today's more promising GC contenders.

A group of 10 riders went clear right from start, building up a nice gap quickly:

So no real threat for the GC, while still featuring some decent puncheurs. No one with KoM-points collected so far, but with four Cat2-climbs on the menu, anything looks possible for the polka dot lead.

We're jumping straight into the hilly sector - 47km to go. The peloton started to chase and reduce the gap to 3'30" in the meantime. This higher pace leads to an early major split, with just 37 riders remaining in the main peloton.

A few notable GC-names in serious trouble already, may it be because of bad positioning or legs:

The group Samwel (accompanied by riders like Txurruka, Raisin or Antunes) wouldn't catch up to the first bunch, as we now just have 12km remaining and the final climb ahead! Horrible news for Samwel, who was always going to fear those hilly stages a bit. He's already down by 3 minutes on the group of top-favorites.

Those groups are still 2'40" behind the race leaders, but that's probably enough to avoid any damage in the GC.. more intersting will be those riders, who struggle to follow, such as:

At the very front of the race, a duo with De Clerq and Izagirre dropped their former breakaway companions to enter the final descend with a promising gap.

No one could take the mountain competition's lead, but they came close to Raisin:

Kwiatkowski keeps his pace up and could yet hold off the chasing group by quite a margin! He's soon catching up to the last remaining escapees Jang/Chiarello/Yates/Kamzong, but still about two minutes behind the new leading duo!

Behind him, Valverde, Van den Broeck and Berhane try to attack group Rujano as well. Will we see the GC-leader in troubles today?

With now just 3km remaining and the groups coming together a bit, it's clear that we will definitely see some signifacant moves in the GC today:

Kwiatkwoski with a nice gap on group Rujano, so he may actually attack yellow already today! Also Valverde and Van Den Broeck look set to fight back a few positions, while Iglinski and of course Samwel are likely to lose valuable time here. Also Kiserlovski in real danger to lose his 5th in the GC! Mat Senan (7th) about 4 minutes behind the leading group, too!

De Clerq and Izagirre will battle for line honours first: they are head-to-head with the line approaching..

And what a close one for Rujano today: he defends yellow by just 16" on Kwiatkowski, who delivered big time and will surely put more pressure on Rujano in the final hilly stage. Valverde doing great for his PT-team to jump onto 3rd.

Iglinski dropping to 5th, Kiserlovski 8th, Samwel to 17th.. So a nice stage for the likes of Bennett, Van Den Broeck and also Berhane (11th) made up some lost ground..
