The much-anticipated cobbled team time trial is here. Just who will it favour the most?

Taking place over a circuited area, with the Haaghoek sector featuring prominently, it made for some interesting viewing with many teams coming close to each other.

We soon received an indication of how the race was going to go at the first checkpoint. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/met.png

Metinvest were the 10th team to start and one of the strongest in pure time trialling strength. The opening sector was low on cobbles, but they came through in only 3rd place.

This put them 4 seconds behind Orange, and 11 behind the early leaders pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png

Aker - MOT. The Norwegian squad has wasted little time in reducing to the minimum 5 riders - with their 3 weakest cobbled riders lagging behind.

Two of the weaker teams today did not need to worry much about the opposition, they were in a private battle: for 3rd overall and the U25 jersey. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png

Vesuvio and Schlechter began with an 8 second advantage on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vwa.png

VolksWagen and Zepunkte.

A fast start from Vesuvio saw them gain an early 16 second advantage - somewhat of a surprise as VolksWagen do look slightly better on paper. By the 2nd check that was down to 11 though.

Far from the cleanest of finishes for VolksWagen, as Predatsch loses ground as their 5th rider. They've turned the tables on Vesuvio and are faster at the finish by ... 7 seconds! Schlechter clings on to win the GC battle by 1 second.

At the first checkpoint in general, the Top 4 teams were separated by less than 10 seconds.

But over the middle course of the race Pokerstars.com set a blistering pace to go from 22 seconds down to holding the fastest time - albeit with the same time as Project 1t4i.

Oz and Venchi fell away considerably in this section though, as the gaps began to widen. Although saying that, again the Top 4 were separated by no more than 10 seconds.

Quickstep and Movistar both posting similar times through the race and that continued all the way to the finish. With 6 teams left to finish, they are together in 2nd and 3rd respectively, 5 seconds behind leaders Aker - MOT.

None of the Top 3 had much to fight for on the GC front but behind them pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gde.png

Good Energy have secured a Top 10 GC position for Luke Rowe by finishing ahead of the teams of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ozc.png

Becherovka - Petrof are next to the line, and they seem to have struggled at times. When Bewley took to the front on the cobbles, the rest of the team would scramble.

They performed much more smoothly away from the cobbles though and record a new fastest time, 8 seconds faster than Oz. It also guarantees Bewley a Top 10 GC. He is provisional 5th for now, but some strong teams are yet to finish.

Pokerstars.com. Fastest at the 2nd split and they appear to have kept it going, as they become the new leaders by 14 seconds - great news for the GC hopes of Kluge.

Red Bull - Huawei are next and with 4 riders in the GC Top 20 they could expect a strong performance, particularly with Cancellara on board. But they do not have a 5th good cobbled rider, and the time trial strength after Cancellara is non-existent too - and that has combined to produce a disappointing performance. They end the day with only 1 rider in the GC Top 20, and Cancellara taking the worst possible position available to him: 13th.

Red Bull ended up acting as the carrot on the stick for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pro.png

Project 1t4i - with this being the closest we got to a catch today.

They lost 22 seconds to Pokerstars in the middle, but with a target to aim at, they have really put the hammer down and set the new fastest time - by 28 seconds! This could be enough for Remco Broers to take 5th overall, with only Bpost left to challenge.

Interesting to note that Lampaert was comfortably distanced by the time by the end. Their 2nd best cobbled rider, but clearly their worst time trialler. So while cobbles stat seems to be key here, time trial stat is still playing a key role.

Azteca-NBCSN are fighting for Danny Summerhill and his leader's jersey but it is evident that they are not really close in that battle. They finish a respectable enough 15th, 1'53 behind Project 1t4i.

Pieter Vanspeybrouck. The strongest cobbled team in the race on paper - but no stand out time triallist. They finish 2nd on today's stage, a distant 25 seconds from Project 1t4i.

So Project 1t4i return to their former TTT winning days, but Bpost have plenty to celebrate with the GC triumph for Vanspeybrouck!
