Omloop Het Volk - Stage 2
roturn
Many riders will be disappointed after Stage 1, can they make amends on the Kuurne-Bruxelles-Kuurne route for Stage 2?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/OhVolk/ohv-2-1.jpg

There was a fierce start to the day as 20 teams all sent a rider on the attack to try to form a huge breakaway. Some strong cobbled riders were amongst them too!

But old man Smowz, the Red Bull - Huawei manager, clearly was having none of it. And in a battle of Red Bull vs The World, Red Bull won - the breakaway was caught.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/OhVolk/ohv-2-2.jpg

Instead a smaller group of 7 was allowed to go clear.

42km to go and their lead is only 3 minutes, it may be about to come down fast as we have just seen a repeat of yesterday in the peloton, with a split leading to 44 riders clear of the rest.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/OhVolk/ohv-2-4.jpg

Many who made the split yesterday were caught out, but this time there is a swift response - led by Project 1t4i - and it all comes back together.

A very interesting move happens with 30km to go as Good Energy duo pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gde.png Fenn and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gde.png Blythe form a dangerous group with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Cancellara.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/OhVolk/ohv-2-5.jpg

Becherovka are quick to close it down, but then the peloton just completely shut down, sitting up completely. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/azt.png Azteca - NBCSN had done much of the pace setting through the day but they have nobody left with energy now, with Good Energy and Red Bull no longer interested either.

It's a stage win for the breakaway then (although not Tatarinov who had already been dropped and caught by the pack) as their gap rapidly escalates, but disaster for the strongest man in the move pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Vegard Breen - who punctures at just the wrong time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/OhVolk/ohv-2-6.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mus.png Rojas Gil makes a move for it on the final cobbled section. 15km to go and they now lead by 7 minutes. If it continues to escalate at that rate they may have the 13 minutes required to take the GC lead!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/OhVolk/ohv-2-7.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ork.png Jérôme, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/btc.png Kozhatayev and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ozc.png Visconti aren't letting Rojas get away yet though - and are mindful to keep the pace up with Breen trailing by 40 seconds and closing in.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ozc.png Giovanni Visconti attacks with 14km to go, going over the top of Rojas, and there is no immediate response!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/OhVolk/ohv-2-8.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ork.png Vincent Jérôme doesn't wait much longer though, and now fights to close down a 17 second gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/OhVolk/ohv-2-9.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Vegard Breen has recovered to catch pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mus.png José Joaquin Rojas Gil, but remains over 40 seconds behind even Jerome.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/OhVolk/ohv-2-10.jpg

There's late drama in the peloton as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Fabian Cancellara has attacked inside the final 10km. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ozc.png Marcus Burghardt is also clear, while Bewley is seen to be amongst those relaying. It's somewhat of an irrelevance now for the stage - but does at least stop the breakaway's lead escalating, and it is causing splits in the peloton which may have significance.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/OhVolk/ohv-2-11.jpg

At the front the question is, can Visconti hold off Jerome?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/OhVolk/ohv-2-12.jpg

The answer is yes! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ozc.png Giovanni Visconti wins the stage to give Oz Cycling Project their first win of the season.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/OhVolk/ohv-2-13.jpg

Jerome settles for 2nd, with Breen a frustrated 3rd and Rojas - of course - finishing 4th.

Kozhatayev hung on for 5th place.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Sam Bewley once again awakens in the final couple of kilometres, sprinting past Burghardt, Cancellara and also the final breakaway rider Lagkuti.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/OhVolk/ohv-2-14.jpg

This group features just 37 riders at the end, including only 9 of the 19 who finished together in positions 5-24 on Stage 1. Those 9 were Bewley, Rowe, Stallaert, Kluge, Kruijswijk, Cancellara, Burghardt, Gusev and Broers - and they have now guaranteed themselves a GC position between 5th and 13th.

They finished 5'37 behind Visconti, with the next group in at 7'35. Visconti's GC rise is only as far as 24th place then - but he is actually just 1 second behind 14th overall, so opportunites for Oz TTT gains to pay off tomorrow.

15th place on the stage for Summerhill gives him 1 point, to secure an outright win in the Points competition over Visconti.
