Omloop Het Volk - Stage 1
roturn
The opening stage takes on the typical route of the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, and as such as is probably the hardest road stage of the race - very important then.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/OhVolk/ohv-1-0.jpg

A 6 man breakaway went clear but as soon as they reached the cobbles it was clear that there was a differenceof ability amongst them. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Pit Schlechter, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Zdenek Stybar and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/qst.png Thomas Degand look the strongest, meanwhile pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ven.png Louis Vervaeke, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pnd.png Kleber Silva and former Portugese champ pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/btc.png Marcio Portela are starting to realise the pain they've let themselves in for.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/OhVolk/ohv-1-1.jpg

With 122km to go there is a split in the peloton which looks to be more about good positioning than good cobbled ability, with a real mixture of riders here. Metinvest are very well represented and they are driving the pace as if Stage 3 is an individual time trial, and that they believe Ignatiev can somehow find unheard of cobbled skills.

The composition of this group is:

Leaving top cobbled riders such as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gde.png Blythe, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pnd.png Senechal, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ork.png Kamyshev, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mei.png Franzoi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gde.png Fenn, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ven.png Teunissen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Kristoff in the peloton.

The gap is already 2 minutes while Teunissen's day is made worse by a crash, and Kristoff's by a puncture. A concerted effort by the teams of Meiji, Orange and Swisscom in particular reduces the deficit under a minute towards 30 seconds and we seem to be coming back together again as Metinvest's pace wains.

But in a crucial move pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Kris Boeckmans and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Johan Vansummeren start pacing the lead group, and with the added support of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pro.png Tom Leezer the gap starts to grow again.

And that is it. Game over for anybody not in that group of 52, their GC hopes for this race are ended - they won't come back.

Many of the weaker riders of those 52 are dropped as Bpost and 1t4i work together to drive this group. It is down to 29, with 47km to go, when pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/met.png Ignatiev runs into trouble - a huge effort for a man with 54 cobbles. And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/met.png Nolf is going to wait for him!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/OhVolk/ohv-1-3.jpg

We also lose Project 1t4i, one of the key pacesetters, shortly after. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pro.png Koen De Kort is dropped, and his stronger teammates pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pro.png Broers and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pro.png Leezer both wait for him, presumably due to De Kort's TT abilities.

They are still fighting to come back though as with 40km to go the breakaway has been caught. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Stybar can now support Bewley but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/qst.png Degand is alone in this group as Meersman, De Gendt and Feillu have all fallen back. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Schlechter was Vesuvio's leader for the race and the breakaway gamble has worked out nicely, if he can keep up now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/OhVolk/ohv-1-4.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vwa.png Zepuntke has started helping out Bpost with the pacesetting, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/azt.png Summerhill has been sat right at the front, sheltered by teammate Farrar, for a long time now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/qst.png Degand slips right through the group and out the back, but caught in his wheel are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ozc.png Marcus Burghardt and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gde.png Luke Rowe, as well as Vansummeren, Hristov and Vangheel. Bizarrely neither Burghradt or Rowe do anything to keep in contact with the lead group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/OhVolk/ohv-1-5.jpg

The gap opens to a minute and a half before pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gde.png Rowe comes to his senses and attacks. He glides straight across the gap back into the front group. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pok.png Oelerich and the Project 1t4i trio meanwhile both catch the Burghardt group and with 1t4i willing to drive the pace, this at least means Burghardt will not be allowed to completely sit up here.

The pace in the front group of 15 still is not massively high. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tcs.png Vladimir Gusev punctures with 26km to go, losing a minute and a half, but 6km later has ridden himself back to the leaders. Group 1t4i/Burghardt is meanwhile now over 2 minutes down.

Those 15 who are left are:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/azt.png Farrarpcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/azt.png Summerhillpcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Bewleypcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Stybar
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gde.png Rowepcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pok.png Klugepcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Cancellarapcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Cominelli

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ven.png Kruijswijkpcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vwa.png Zepuntkepcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Schlechter

With 18km to go we have reached the final cobbled section and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vwa.png Ruben Zepuntke switches from pace-setting to attack! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/azt.png Danny Summerhill immediately follows.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/OhVolk/ohv-1-6.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Pieter Vanspeybrouck is coming across, and so too is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Pit Schlechter. Not only that but the Luxembourger tries to drive through and into a solo lead. Not tired by his breakaway efforts then!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/OhVolk/ohv-1-7.jpg

The others respond, and into the final 10km it is the PCT duo of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/azt.png Summerhill and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Vanspeybrouck who lead the way, with a 25 second advantage on Zepunkte and Schlechter.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/OhVolk/ohv-1-8.jpg

Bewley? Cancellara? Gusev? Blythe? Kluge? Kruijswijk? Well, despite Bewley and Cancellara both having a teammate and surely able to follow the moves themselves .. they have sat up. Already over 3 minutes down and soon to be caught by Group 1t4i/Burghardt.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/OhVolk/ohv-1-9.jpg

This bizarre race now closes in on the final stages, and the two wildcard tems will battle for the stage win, and perhaps the overall GC too! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Vanspeybrouck goes on the attack with 3km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/OhVolk/ohv-1-10.jpg

But he cannot get away, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/azt.png Summerhill now forces him to leadout the sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/OhVolk/ohv-1-11.jpg

It's a perfect position for the American and he does not let it slip. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/azt.png Danny Summerhill wins Stage 1 of Omloop Het Volk!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/OhVolk/ohv-1-12.jpg

Zepunkte did all the chasing behind, which allowed pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Schlechter to sprint past for 3rd place - 1'12 behind Summerhill. There is no way that Vesuvio should have the highest finishing PT rider on this stage - a huge slice of flukey luck for them. These two were also battling for the U25 jersey.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/OhVolk/ohv-1-13.jpg

Finally with 2.5km to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Sam Bewley wakes up and launches a long sprint. Far far too late and he leads the group in for 5th place, 5'16 down, followed by Rowe, Burghardt and Kruijswik - with Boeckmans and Stallaert making it 3 Bpost in the Top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/OhVolk/ohv-1-14.jpg

The Nolf/Ignatiev group finished at 9'17, while an embarassed peloton ended up with the quite unlucky deficit of 13'13.

4 riders finished outside of the time limit, including Michael Rogers. A blow for their TTT hopes.
