After yesterdays calm prologue, today a pretty tough stage (and actually still one of the easiest).
195km, flat rated but with rarely a moment of real flat roads. It`s going up and down all the route today, which should make it too hard for pure sprinters.
As the favourite list shows, there are a couple of hilly sprinters though. Vastaranta, Favilli, Kuboki, Kruopis or Delage to name a few.
5 riders in todays break:
Jacobsen
Wengelin
Chenaux
Gil
Eldridge
While the teams with good sprinters (Strava, De Laval, Generali, Fred Whitton) do the pace behind and allow them quite a gap of more than 7min, the first KoM was reached already.
Cat. 4 Chenaux5 Jacobsen3 Wengelin1
Also we have seen a first crash.
Einsle
Vitoria
Sabatini
Dahlberg
So a few riders that could be expected to perform today or on other stages.
With Indosat having highered the pace in the peloton now, those 4 will have a tough task to come back. That said, it`s still 110km to go and they should do it.
Another rider though got injured some kilometers later and has to abandon the race:
Orozco
With 80km to go it`s Strava doing the big work. It`s incredible what depth they have brought here. Riders, who could lead some teams and have good GC chances like Pfingsten, Tulik or Kriek need to work. With Langeveld, Selvaggi and Favilli they still have some of the strongest riders.
Meanwhile two more Cat.4 reached with the same outcome:
Cat. 4 Chenaux5 Wengelin3 Jacobsen1 Cat. 4 Chenaux5 Wengelin3 Jacobsen1
Bad luck for Kruopis. One of todays big favourites with a puncture. Immediately 3 team mates slow down and will bring him back. Still enough time left and they will do so 10km later with 60km to go.
Sprint Jacobsen6 Chenaux4 Eldridge2
More sprints in between. With De Winde and Vandaele two decent cobblers on the ground. With Generali really going a fast pace now to catch the break, those two won`t make it back and lose time today.
And another rider with bad luck. Not Bakari. The African super cobbler just lost contact (again). Ahead of him though it`s Turgot having a puncture with 10km to go. No chance he will make it back in time.
Cobblers in general with a hard day. Also Eeckhout and De Vocht are behind the peloton and will lose time.
The breakaway though couldn`t survive with the high pace of Generali and Indosat. Those two teams now also form the sprint trains. First is a bit surprising as they don`t have the fastest sprinter. But with that duo, it`s very understandable to make a train. Indosat had two options as Uchima also is a strong hilly sprinter. But it`s Kruopis behind him having the leader role.
Lee Ratto Uchima Moser Kruopis Sweeting Hutarovich Briggs Kuboki Last Meyer Verschoor- - Vastaranta Favilli Tleubayev Finetto
Surprisingly some of the hilly sprinters are a bit too far behind. Delage even isn`t sprinting at all as the team goes for Sweeting instead while other sprinters like Sobota or Peeters clearly struggle with the hills.
Ratto also struggled it seems. He is a huge leadout normally but he hates those hills. So Moser had to switch over and lost some positions.
Other riders though are using the free side now.
Kuboki with an early sprint followed by Hutarovich and Sweeting.
On the other side still Uchima ahead of Kruopis with Meyer and Moser behind.
Kruopis has left the slipstream and goes into the wind now. Still 1km to go but in especially Kuboki is going strong as he gaps the two sprinters behind him.
Therefore Kinney in the full yellow jersey also coming fast on the right now.
Kuboki slows down. This was clearly too early. Behind him all riders close up again a bit but it`s Kruopis now having a nice lead.
Riders like Vastaranta, De Maar, Favilli all have a nice speed now but started way too far behind.
So it`s Kruopis celebrating a big win here. No other rider came close to him.
As he was strong yesterday already he takes the leader jersey.
Still 2nd after a long sprint Kuboki. The uphill bit favoured him again but it was a photo finish as Kinney came close just like De Maar in 4th!
Sweeting as decent 5th today ahead of Vastaranta and Hutarovich. Moser, Gaimon and Meyer as remaining top10. For some the hills surely were too much.
