First tough stage in Tachira and it's tough to judge. It looks pretty mountainous to me but organizers decided to categorize it as hilly. First king of mountains points on offer so another jersey comes into play. Home rider Rujano will want to try and stamp his authority with likes of Sella, Nazaret and Marquez looking to challenge. If it's more hilly than Zingle could offer something different here, if Ventoso makes it he could well win the stage too. But the question is how tough that climb really is!
Two riders quickly establish a gap today, once again rider present from Sancor who are truly showing themselves well as a new team and with Barredo more accomplished climber if they hold peleton long enough they stand a chance of having a mountain jersey in their team at the end of day.
Jesus Del Nero
Carlos Barredo
Prio leading the proceedings in the peleton, no usual help from Bpost or Euskaltel today though! They will do best to defend Avelino's jersey but the odds are stacked against him.
With 20km before we hit the main climb Rui Pedro Vinhas suffers a fall! Prio ease of pacing at the front peleton and with two teammates Vinhas makes his way back to the peleton in next few kilometres, we'll see if the fall affected him in any way.
Barredo set a steady tempo at the 4th category climb and dropped Del Nero pretty quickly, he holds 3 minute gap with 40km remaining. If he can hold this for next 20km and cross 2nd category climb first he will guarantee himself the jersey for tomorrow.
In the peleton it's Mobil for Rujano, Bank of Ireland for Marquez and Siam for Sella doing majority of the work.
As the front of the peleton crosses the 4th category summit we can see Avelino being distanced among other sprinters, this is first tough day for sprinters with many more to come, they will have to recover well if they want to fight for the points jersey here.
2nd category climb did the job..while not being very steep, the length and steady pace from Siam and Mobil really shed the peleton and only 42 riders are left in the main pack. All leaders are present with no-one surprising missing from the bunch.
While Mobil and Siam are doing their shredding Barredo claims the 2nd category climb and guarantees himself mountains jersey for tomorrow.
What's more important is he is still holding 3 minute gap as he begins quick descent before the last 3rd cat climb! And only 22km remaining!
While the peleton seems to have been shredding riders they aren't taking time on Barredo and with only one small climb before long descent if they don't hurry up the stage win honors will be gone!
Azteca take over lead of the peleton with RodrÃguez Briceno & Murillo at the front of the race. 18km left and gap stands at 2'30"!
Barredo crosses the 3rd category climb and he knows he can win this now, and he doesn't even look tired at all..10km left which comprises a lot of descending, latest gap stands at 1'58"...can he bring this new team a monumental win?
1km left and the team are already celebrating in the car. Barredo is well clear. Peleton won't be catching him today!
While Barredo is in his last 50 metres peleton see 1km banner! There is no organization everyone is spiriting for themselves now.
BARREDO! He doesn't celebrate but I am sure he will later on. What a win for the him and the new Sancor team! Not only he'll be taking the stage win but also the yellow. There will be lots of champagne tonight.
Vitor Rodrigues rekindles his inner Theo Bos dominating the sprint for 2nd, his sprint also limits the gap Barredo is going to get... he stops the clock at 1'18"!
Nazaret grabs 3rd and with it 8 bonus seconds, in such mountains race but every second counts. Azteca did lots of work at the end and Quintana rewards them with 4th place, Colombian is looking strong ahead of next days.
Pantano Gómez on 5th and Rujano on 6th are the next climbers. Today was bit too easy for them but they will look to make their moves in next few days which should prove much brutal!
Olivier finishing 8th means he will take over the white jersey, which could prove a brilliant side story with Quintana looking strong contender.
