It`s the first real chance for the sprinters. There is a small hill very late but it`s far too short and easy to really make the sprinters struggle. So today is the chance for a couple of CT teams and other sprinter teams to show something.
The list of stage favourites is an obvious overview of the main sprinters in the race.

Kenya Airways pretty alone with the work in the peloton. 80km and almost 7min left. It would be time for the other sprinter teams to support them.

Watson is slowing down after this KoM. Tired or again a Risa management decision? Last time they did this, the breakaway succeeded. They better hope it does not again. 50km and 5min gap!

Nasty crash. And it`s a rider, who was expected to perform well today: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/amx.png Giacomo Nizzolo. One of the top 5 sprinters here with high hopes to reach the podium. His sprint support Keough and Klemme immediately slow down trying to bring him back. 48km left could be enough.

Finally with 25km to go and still a bit more than 2min gap the sprinter teams are coming to the front. Novatek for Serebriakov and Karcher for Haussler. Of the top sprinters it`s only Lavoine not sending a helper to the front, while Amex is excused obviously as Nizzolo looks in big trouble. Almost 10min for him and he looks seriously injured.

3km and still quite a gap. Apparently that late the small hill was actually in favour of the breakaway as those are decent enough puncheurs.

2km and the four in front are back together. Jelfs ahead of Zielinski, Smirnovs and Jensen.

The peloton is coming fast but still have a few hundred meters to the break. The Kenya sprint fails it seems as Impey did not follow Marcato`s huge acceleration.
Reimer and Avila out of nowhere into the slipstream of Marcato now, while Haussler still has McEvoy ahead of him.
Other riders in a decent position are Impey, Bennett, Matthews or Mezgec with Docker and Serebriakov a bit behind those.

Zielinski in the middle is fast, so is Smirnovs. Those two were expected to be the best sprinters.

And indeed they make it. Horrible timing by the sprinter teams.
Zielinski takes a close win as Jensen was surprisingly strong in the end. Big win for the CT team in a C1 race. So Fablok did everything right by hoping for Zielinski instead of going for a sprint finish with Lavoine.
Smirnovs as 3rd with a first Evonik sign here while Jelfs has to live with the unlucky 4th.

Unlucky Impey. His team worked the most today but had too little support. As 5th he misses the bonus seconds to move him up the GC again.
Haussler and Matthews as next.

Last but not least two important notes. First: Giacomo Nizzolo indeed was too injured to finish the stage. Late in the race he decided to abandon. Unfortunate for the team that not only they miss a good sprint option for Adelaide now. Also Keough and Klemme waited to long for him and missed the time limit this way. So they lose 3 riders ahead of tomorrows hard stage.

And 2nd note. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/boi.png Nic Hamilton, 3rd in the GC must have had a crash or puncture in the final 8km. It was totally offside the cameras but he lost more than 3min today together with team mate Petrie-Armstrong. This way he is losing his nice GC position.
