Tour Down Under - Stage 3

The 3rd stage might be a first bigger decider. While not the hardest stage, it`s the first hilly rated and has a late hill, that is ideal to attack as it`s hard to gain time again on the following descent towards the finish. Next to Willunga Hill surely the best chance to get rid of weaker puncheurs.
Favourites are the top puncheurs. Meyer, Reimer and Pozzato could do well with bonus seconds due to their better sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Tour Down Under/mg2015_tdu_03_PCM0155.jpg

Make it 3 times. Iman Suparman in the first breakaway attempt. Third time though that this one fails. Not really a superman performance.
Early problems for OTP. Leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/otp.png Julien Simon punctures and is behind. All is team mates slow down and will bring him back. All but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/otp.png Peter Simon actually, who is already dropped earlier with a dozen of riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Tour Down Under/mg2015_tdu_03_PCM0159.jpg

4 riders succeed with their breakaway attempt.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fxg.png Daspuntsag
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rge.png Watson
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gnu.png Del Nero
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/boi.png Hamilton
So first is 11th in the GC with +43s while all others are also decently placed with +47s.
After the first sprint Watson is slowing down again. Apparently he is called back to support his leader Meyer today.

Amex (for Mehr-Wenige), Vontobel (for Di Maggio) and Risa (for Meyer) are working behind. Interesting that it`s the sprinters doing the relay at the moment as Amex sends Nizzolo-Grillo-Keough to the front.
A bit later also Gazelle for Pozzato is working. With 50km the gap is down to 3'30. But 20km later they only gained another 45s and it`s suddenly not looking too bad for the breakaway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Tour Down Under/mg2015_tdu_03_PCM0177.jpg

18km and still 2'50 left. The peloton seems to underestimate the breakaway. All 3 are solid puncheurs and in especially Del Nero is a real pain for other riders on the flat, where he is able to go a high pace for a long time.
Good for the peloton that Kenya Airways decides to work for Impey as well now. With Konte and Marcato they send some strong guys to the front just like Swedbank for Reimer as well.So five teams against 3 breakaway riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Tour Down Under/mg2015_tdu_03_PCM0181.jpg

15km left for the peloton and this is the time, where you really should not crash. Bad luck for those 4 then. In especially for Karcher as with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/kar.png Vakoc and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/kar.png Haussler both leaders were involved. The others are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fxg.png Steegmans and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vtb.png Kohler. Immediately all Karcher riders but best placed pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/kar.png McEvoy move backwards to support them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Tour Down Under/mg2015_tdu_03_PCM0190.jpg

And yet another crash. Again a rider that was supposed to do well: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/coc.png Efimkin followed by
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sbp.png Dahlberg. Good for him that he just gets up on his new bike when the Karcher train passed him. So he has nice support to move further up again. Additionaly 5 Chernobyl riders move backwards as well including Suparman. So it`s 10 helpers for the puncheurs. And good that with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/coc.png Prevar also Chernobyl has a good rider left in the front rows of the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Tour Down Under/mg2015_tdu_03_PCM0195.jpg

9km left for the peloton. And we are on the climb and the group in front still has a bit over 2min left.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vtb.png Di Maggio has enough. He is accelerating himself and nobody really can follow this immediately. A couple of riders try to do so:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/amx.png Mehr-Wenige
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bup.png Ventoso
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rge.png Meyer
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sbp.png Reimer
And another few meters later the next riders attack:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ken.png Impey
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gnu.png Klemme
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gzl.png Pozzato
and then as well as last rider in this move:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/boi.png Shaw

So who is missing at the moment of the top riders?
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bup.png Betancourt
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gzl.png Furdi
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/coc.png Prevar
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fab.png Lejman
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gnu.png Chaves
next to the crashed
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/coc.png Efimkin
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/kar.png Vakoc
Those two at least rejoined the back of the peloton meanwhile and it`s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/coc.png Prevar now getting the go from his manager to follow the attacks.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Tour Down Under/mg2015_tdu_03_PCM0208.jpg

3km left and the trio still in front. But look at the next corner. Di Maggio is closing! He gained lots of time on the climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Tour Down Under/mg2015_tdu_03_PCM0210.jpg

Also Lejman and Furdi did attack the peloton now and are solo in between the top riders and the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Tour Down Under/mg2015_tdu_03_PCM0211.jpg

1,5km left. Di Maggio only 200m behind and he is going much faster as the top three either don`t have much energy left or already started to play for the stage win.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Tour Down Under/mg2015_tdu_03_PCM0215.jpg

800m and now Di Maggio has reached them. Hamilton goes on the left, while Del Nero still waiting behind Daspuntsag.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Tour Down Under/mg2015_tdu_03_PCM0217.jpg

But the Spaniard is coming through the middle now going into the lead. Di Maggio seems to have reached his maximum. Just when he almost got their slipstream, they accelerated making it harder for him to make the final bit. A bit behind the duo of Meyer and Ventoso.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Tour Down Under/mg2015_tdu_03_PCM0219.jpg

Huge win for Del Nero. Grupo Nutresa keeps their breakaway gen it seems. Hamilton takes 2nd over Despuntsag and all three will make a nice GC jump. Bad luck for Watson, who had to leave the breakaway early.
Di Maggio as 4th without any bonus seconds but he gained time on his biggest opponents today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Tour Down Under/mg2015_tdu_03_PCM0221.jpg

Easy sprint win for Ventoso against Meyer for 5th. 24s in the end the loss to Di Maggio. This is not too much but then again Di Maggio is also expected the strongest on Willunga Hill.

Another 20s a group of 7 including most other big names while a couple of more riders also finished ahead of the peloton, which is losing almost 4min today. Clearly Betancourt and his Buff team the big loser today as they missed the attacks. Also Evonik not having their best first 3 stages here.

But now the GC calculation starts. Pozzato was in the 44s group just like Reimer and Impey. In the end it`s indeed Del Nero taking the GC lead while Di Maggio gains the time again, he had lost due to bonus seconds so far.
