Badaling International
Gustavovskiy
Welcome to Beijing. Today we'll follow the pro peloton through a hard day in the hilly route which connects the Chinese capital to the Great Wall.

Three riders take the honours of forming the first break of the PT season. They are: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mei.png Othman, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/met.png Vosekalns and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/boi.png McConvey.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Badaling/badaling1.png

These three brave men will not enjoy the chinese countryside, as being such a small group for such a big race, might be seen as a recipe for failure. That doesn't stop them from opening a gap up to ~10min halfway to the finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sui.png Swisscom, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png Festina, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mus.png Movistar and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/btc.png Bouygues start reducing the difference from then onwards.

And BAM! With 90km to go we get the first crash of the season. Quite a number of riders get involved! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pnd.png Gilbert andpcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ven.png de Bie being the biggest! Their teams immediately slow down, before starting TTTing up to the main group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Badaling/badaling2.png

They succeed in doing so. Let's hope that was all there was to be, regarding crashes.

The race rolls on to the last three laps around the hilly circuit. With 56km remaing the gap has been reduced to 2'36 as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png Pichon commands the pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Badaling/badaling3.png

News of another crash come in. This time a smaller one, where the most reknowned name was pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ork.png Edet.

We are nearing the penultimate crest of the summit, and what a better time for the first attacks! No other than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Frank Schleck the record holder here in Badaling. Can he go on to take a sensational 3rd triumph?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Badaling/badaling4.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pro.png Vanendert and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mei.png Cunego try to catch him in the descent. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mei.png Othman may be very helpful for the italian now that he's been dropped by the front men.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Badaling/badaling5.png

A large number of favourites has jumped from the bunch too:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png Spilak
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pok.png Ginnani
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bac.png Ulissi
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tcs.png Trofimov
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gde.png Ponzi
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vwa.png Flugel
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Hagen
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/btc.png Bakelants
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mus.png Van Garderen
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Skujins
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sui.png Schumacher
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pnd.png Gilbert
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Sagan

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Badaling/badaling6.png

The groups are separated by very slim margins (15''-20'' ). Meanwhile pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Schleck has pulled himself up to the remaining early escapees

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tcs.png Trofimov decides it's time to bridge the gap on his own and catches pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mei.png Cunego and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pro.png Vanendert, while his former group gets swallowed by the pack.

This trio catch the remnants of the BOTD to form a sole front group just as the last summit begins. The peloton is just around the corner though and doesn't have more than 24'' of disadvantage!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Badaling/badaling7.png

That doesn't stop them though! The pace is raised again in order to expand the gap to the main group. Unfortunately for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/met.png Vosekalns and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/boi.png McConvey it's the end of their hopes, as they get dropped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tcs.png Troffitruffles doesn't want company any more and tries to getaway from the oldies pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Schleck and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mei.png Cunego, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pro.png Vanendert was already suffering!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Badaling/badaling8.png

Time for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/btc.png Bakelants to show himself!! He pounces really hard to catch the remaining two chasers. There are 18km to go, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tcs.png Trofimov already has 30'' to these.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Badaling/badaling9.png

More riders try to leave the pack: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mus.png Van Garderen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sui.png Schumacher, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/qst.png Froome. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/btc.png Bakelants has left the other two behind and goes on the hunt for the russian.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Sagan and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png Spilak are the next attackers from the peloton and form a trio with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/qst.png Froome, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mus.png Van Garderen is further ahead with the veteran duo.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png Spilak's group is caught a little afterwards. But the big moment is happening further ahead as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tcs.png Trofimov crests the hill all alone with 26'' on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/btc.png Bakelants, who has 34'' on his chasers. The pack comes 24'' later. It's all downhil now!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Badaling/badaling10.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png Festina is doing everything they can, but they seem unable to gain any time whatsoever!

It doesn't matter anyway, nothing was going to deter the russian powerhouse from achieving his goal. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tcs.png Trofimov starts this season in style by outclassing everyone else and celebrating with time to look the crowd who cheers for him by the roadside. Congratulations Tinkoff!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Badaling/badaling11.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/btc.png Bakelants will finish 2nd after a valiant effort. In 3rd comes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mus.png Van Garderen, who brings a very well achieved podium result for his team.

Behind them we have a trio of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Schleck, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mei.png Cunego and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Sagan (who seems to have jumped from the chasing group. They finish in that order.

The sprint in the main group awards pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png Koretzky (7th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pok.png Keinath (8th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/scl.png Kiserlovski (9th) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Skuijns (10th) the final places in the top10.
