Continental Championships - America RR

A very hilly route in America.
Favourites are Van Garderen as best puncheur here. But he will have some challenge. Also 3 stars by the organization to Phinney and Monsalve.
2 stars for Boswell, Boily and Betancourt and outsiders Amador, Chaves/Uran and Talansky/Dombrowski. So it`s one to lose for Team USA.

Only 3 breakaway riders:
Navarro
Colex
De Fino Silveiro

Surprisingly it`s Costa Rica doing all the early work. Amador had a huge time trial and must be in some great form. So far Team USA is waiting. 135km and a bit under 9min and going backwards already. Venezuela for Monsalve also supporting them from time to time with Colombia being in the front rows very rarely.

On the final 70km though it`s USA taking over completely. With Boswell, Dombrowski and a bit later Talansky within those relaying riders, the tasks are obvious. All in for Van Garderen and Phinney.

Navarro as last attacker gets caught with 27km to go. Team USA with 4 riders in the front now. The peloton is down to 54 riders already.

With 22km left USA goes with their 2nd option. Phinney attacks but lots of movement a bit behind. Monsalve the first to be seen, who tries to follow.
Immediately the USA leader Van Garderen reacts as well with Betancourt and Boily behind him.
Then it`s De Maar.
For a moment the peloton seems to slow down a bit as all teams have a rider in front. All? Well, Costa Rica hasn`t. Amador though is a bit further back in the peloton. Not sure if he got blocked or had a technical. Or just not concentrated. He totally missed it.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/PreSeason/ContinentalChamps/mg2015_americacc_rr_PCM0046.jpg

Phinney is in front as his attack was strong.
Behind him a group of 4 with Van Garderen, Boily, Betancourt and Monsalve.
Then De Maar 26s behind and already 2min to the peloton. Costa Rica won`t reward their early work today.

Monsalve is dropped. Bolyin especially is strong here while Van Garderen is not chasing. Bad luck for him as he usually should be strongest easily. This way Boily can`t reduce the gap to Phinney, who gains more with every uphill section.

Phinney will win this here. With Van Garderen not working behind, the trio is not working well toegether and is attacking each other all the time instead of relaying. This way Phinney got a 2min gap and Monsalve is back to them. Also De Maar is closing.

More than 3min in the end for Phinney, who wins the double here in America. Nicely done. Perfect attack and USA played this very well with their amount of top riders.

Van Garderen is not only the best sprinter of those. He also saved a lot of energy on last kilometers. So it`s an easy 1-2 for Team USA.
Betancourt wins the sprint for bronze ahead of Boily and Monsalve.
De Maar on a good 6th while Amador is coming to the finish together with him. Obviously he did attack a bit later just like Talansky in 8th and the Colombians Chaves and Uran as last top 10 finishers.
