Continental Championships - Africa RR

Time for the African Continental Championship. The hilly route with a length of almost 260km is very tough. Not many big puncheurs come from Africa, so the race is quite open. That said the biggest African stars are expected to be in the top spots:
Ben Nasser
Craven
Augustyn
Teklit
Berhane
Lagab
or even
Impey.

7 riders in the early break. No very good puncheurs within those.
Nikiema
Hadi
Ayoune
Kindeya
Abdallah
Thaouta
Gichora

It`s Namibia for Craven and Tunisia for Ben Nasser doing the work in the peloton.
160km left and a gap of a bit more than 10min.

Bad crash in a corner and obviously some decent riders included. It`s Kudus, Drobisch and Ghdamsi. So 3 important helpers for some of the favourites.
All 3 of them though are able to join the peloton a bit afterwards again.

Exactly those 3 mentioned teams are doing the late work. 45km left and less than 2min gap. The riders have more than 200km behind them already, which is more than many of these are used to.

Augustyn with the first attack. 30km to the finish and on the 2nd last hill. Behind him Craven immediately responds.
Also Eritreans Berhane/Teklit, Ben Nasser, Hategeka/Niyonshuta and Samwel follow.

But it`s only Craven and Augustyn staying ahead of the peloton. They just pass the last breakaway rider Nikiema, who doesn`t have any chance here to react.
Eritrea and Tunisia doing a high pace now trying to catch the duo in front.

1 lap left and Craven goes solo. He has a 24s gap to Augustyn. The peloton of 32 riders follows another 39s. The Namibian still being very strong it seems.
Also Algeria with Lagab works in the group behind now.

Berhane though is the only rider, who still has the energy to attack the high pace. He almost reaches Augustyn now with 10km to go. Though it was Craven, who clearly was fastest on the uphill section. He is now almost 2min in front.

Augustyn struggles now. The South African is passed by Berhane and also the peloton behind is slowly coming closer. Still 8,8km left for him.

7,5km left but Dan Craven can already celebrate. 2'22 is his advantage. This must be enough.

It actually improved a bit until the line. Big win for Namibia. Craven wins the African Continental Championship in 2015!

Berhane comes in 2nd. His attack was a bit too late but he can still be happy with silver.
And also Augustyn just stays in front to win bronze. Not as much as he might have hoped some kilometers ago.

The sprint behind was a bit weird. Apparently the best riders in there did not want or just had no energy left to fight for 4th. So it was Kamzon winning the sprint while Ben Nasser and Lagab only finished 12th/13th.
