60km ITT can hurt a lot. This is far longer than most time trials during the season. Top favourites are Janse Van Rensburg, Teklehaimanot or Craven.
Teklehaimanot is on the road and takes the lead at the first time check. He is 20s ahead of Thomson, another 8s to Hussein and 29s in total to Madani. But the bigger names still to come.
Janse Van Rensburg is the strongest African against the clock. So it`s a small surprise he is not able to beat the best time here. 6s behind after 20km. Surely the hills have helped Teklehaimanot a lot.
Even bigger the surprise that the best puncheur then is further behind. 36s to the Eritrean and only 6th.
Thomson with a strong race as well. 3rd after 20km and now taking 1st after 40km and also in the finish.
His team mate Van Rensburg though looking too strong. He beats his time by 46s with 20km to go. This time the South African is faster than Teklehaimanot, who follows with +18s. Hussein +42, Thomson +46 and Madani +47 next. Craven behind those!
Hussein comes to the finish and the Kenyan beats Thomson! Provisional first for him and seeing that he still holds the 2rd best time at the 2nd check, he could grab bronze here. Huge performance.
Teklehaimanot coming in next beating the earlier times. 40s faser than Hussein.
Janse van Rensburg though with another best. Only 21s though ahead of the Eritrean. This is really not a lot on 60km.
Hussein with +61s takes bronze indeed as Dan Craven had an awful day. Only 9th for the Namibian +2'17''.
