The South African Champs will be held in and around Nelspruit - and the road race is panflat this time.
Project: Africa went for four 3-men-squads this time, so we lack a strong team in terms of numbers here. Defending road champion Hoffman (Metinvest), premium sprinters Van Heerden/Impey (Aker) or Day (Africa) should be considered the favorites when it comes down to a bunch sprint.
Anyway, with no team lining up with more than three riders, a lot will depend on what Project: Africa will do..
They go for two men in the early breakaway:
Meintjes (Africa)
Girdlestone (Africa)
Van Zyl (Kenya)
Venter (Gazelle)
make for a quite strong escaping group. Is this Africa's tactics? Fool the sprinters and go for future star Meintjes?
Well, maybe.. but the remaining two Africa-squads at least ain't giving up that easy on the race.. anyway, the gap grew to 7 minutes with now just 10km to go!
Hoffman (Metinvest) gives it a go now, trying to fullfill a miracle and bridge across the 4-men-break!
Empty-handed, as the gap is too big to close in that short time:
Meintjes tried to attack the leading group in the final lap, but got pulled back quickly.
He's again the first on the move with the sprint for line honours kicking off though!
Did he go for the wrong tactics?
Girdlestone and Van Zyl are catching up with the better speed now! We're already on the final hundred metres..
Neither Meintjes nor Venter will stand a chance:
it's between Girdlestone and Van Zyl, who are head-to-head with the line approaching..
Van Zyl takes it! Girdlestone and Project: Africa have to settle for the runner-up, while last year's runner-up Venter completes the podium.
Kind of a missed chance for Africa with the two strongest riders in this breakaway.. Hoffman, by the way, couldn't pull a gap on the bunch and so it was Impey to sprint for a 5th place about 4'30" behind van Zyl..
Road title/

The 48km flat TT had one clear favorite, so let's it keep it shorter than the road race this time..
With defending TT-champion RJ van Rensburg not at the start, Jay Thomson had to be the considered the strongest in the field. He delivered:
beating his teammates Wesemann and Augustyn by more than a minute, he did well to claim a NC shirt for his team in this rather boring timetrial..
