The Belgian NCs are soon to be kicked off. One of the biggest NCs in the ManGame, 84 riders await the start to a flat road race.
Bpost (16 riders, 2 teams) as the biggest team, though lacking a real favorite. Pokerstars (8), Venchi (6), Quickstep (8) and Bouygues (7), as well as Lierse (8) have some pressure to control the race.
Boonen might have hoped for a cobbled profile, but he's amongst the top-favorites anyway. Van Stayen, Vantomme and Roelandts make for some premium competition though.
A few more names - classic specialists in particular - may fancy their chances, too: Steegmans, Baugnies, Van Avermaet, Stallaert, Vanspeybrouck or up and coming sprinters like Keukeleire or Van der Lijke - to name just a few!
Bpost showing right from the start, that the team(s) will put pressure on those others through attacks rather than waiting for the bunch sprint:
Vandewalle (Bpost)
Vansummeren (Bpost)
Stuyven (Lierse)
Adams (Bouygues)
establish a gap quickly. With Bpost and Lierse, three of those bigger teams in the break. And with Adams, one of Roelandts' mates is in there, too!
This putting some pressure on teams like Pokerstars or Venchi/Quickstep and they work hard to keep the race under control:
27km remaining and the breakaway's gap is kept at 1'30" to this point, where we see the next attacks out of the bunch!
Vanmarcke (Rothaus)
Joseph (Lierse)
Rosseler (Carlsberg)
Meersman (Quickstep)
are followed by
Ghyllebert (TomTom)
Vandousselaere (Bpost)
So Bpost with a truly aggressive race here, while Quickstep obviously won't go all-in for Vantomme only!
Pokerstars and Venchi though pull those latest attackers back quickly. Quite a dangerous attempt and we're definitely enjoying an action-packed race now:
Van den Broeck (Bpost) goes with 23km remaining!
Vanmarcke/De Gendt trying to follow, while the early break still leads by a minute..
Vanmarcke couldn't hang on, while Van den Broeck is joined by De Gendt and also Van Avermaet now with 20km to go!
The early break a minute ahead and the bunch is still pacing to avoid any huge gaps..
..and so it's another short-lived attempt, as Pokerstars brought group VdB back soon.
The action goes on though:
Steegmans (Gazelle) is next in line trying to bridge across the leading group!
Empty-handed, again! Pokerstars and Quickstep leading the bunch (76 riders) into the final lap, 5km to go:
Vansummeren, Vandewalle, Stuyven still in the lead by now just 30" - Adams suffering, Rosseler has been reeled in..
Baugnies (Quickstep) with a late attack now! 4km remaining..
He went past the three remaining early escapees quickly and enters the final 2.5km with a small gap on the peloton, where we see the sprinters lining up:
Van Impe Boonen Roelandts Vanoverschelde Vangenechten Keukeleire Gilbert Vantomme Van Stayen Bakelants Steegmans Maes Van Avermaet Monfort Dupont De Bie
Flamme rouge, Baugnies still holding on to a gap!
Boonen kicking off his sprint from the very front of the bunch, followed by Roelandts!
Keukeleire/Vanoverschelde/Vantomme on the left side now, with Van Stayen/Dupont/Steegmans behind them..
Baugnies more and more suffering with the line approaching! He won't win this, as the sprinters are way faster at this point:
Roelandts with a slight advantage over Boonen... Keukeleire ahead of Vanoverschelde and Vantomme, while Van Stayen still tries to go past them..
..but too late, since Roelandts sprints to a rather comfortable victory here! A well-timed sprint from the perfect position at Boonen's wheel. The latter has to settle for the runner-up after his team worked so hard.
Keukeleire with a nice 3rd place ahead of Vanoverschelde and Vantomme.. Van Stayen 6th, Baugnies 8th eventually. No luck for the most aggressive team Bpost, Vanspeybrouck (14th) as their best finisher in the end.

The ITT has one overwhelming favorite: Cornu and only Cornu! After missing out on a medal in the WCs, it's his title to lose here.
Bpost as the strongest team anyway, so except of guys like De Gendt (Vesuvio) or Kaisen (Venchi), it's Bpost against Bpost against Bpost..
Speaking of Bpost... Vandousselaere with an early start:
1h07'57" for a long lasting best time..
De Gendt may aim for the podium to just break Bpost's dominance, but he's already more than 30 seconds down on Vandousselaere at the half-time split.
Also Vandewalle is faster than De Gendt, and so is Van Aelbroeck! So Bpost with the expected domination already at those splits..
..you notice two of their riders on the picture above? Yap, it's Vandewalle and Cornu!
The top-favorite goes past Vandewalle already 13km before finish! Domination?
Yes, sir!
Cornu is a minute faster than Vandousselaere at half-time..
..and 1'54" at the finish! He did what he was expected to do: crushing the competition.
A nice day for Bpost, which completes a 1-2-3-4 ahead of De Gendt! Kaisen chanceless, as so many others today.
