The Tour of Utah concludes with a hilly rated, but quite mountainous looking stage around Park City: 125km in total, featuring a challenging climb up the "Empire Pass". Close to the finish (10km), we may well expect some serious attacks today.
New GC-leader Rodrigues looked strong yesterday and should be capable of defend his lead. Will Arroyo be more active today? And how will strong puncheurs like Godoy or former race-leader Beltran do? Still a quite open GC overall.
Business as usual with a 5-men-group going clear from the bunch early:
Valencia
Firsanov
Appleby (GC + 13.19)
Flückiger (GC + 13.19)
Guama de la Cruz (GC + 13.19)
Bar any very stupid drama, there's no real threat for the GC and also no one able to attack the KoM-leader Castano..
Tough weather conditions as it's starts snowing halfway through the race: Siam starts controlling the breakaway with 49km remaining, where the gap is at 5'34"..
A quiet stage until today's final, steep climb: 20km remaining (10km of climbing) and we see the first serious attacks out of the bunch!
Txurruka
Rodrigues (GC-leader)
Raisin (GC's 17th, + 2.17)
Arroyo (GC's 10th, + 2.17)
go early in the climb! Rodrigues obviously feeling strong again, while also Arroyo definitely needs to put some pressure on those riders ahead in the GC!
Those first moves kicked off the action here and we see several riders trying to follow:
Sorensen (GC's 9th, + 2.17)
Beltran (GC's 2nd, + 0.41)
managed to join group Rodrigues/Arroyo a few moments later..
Godoy (GC's 3rd, + 1.39)
trying to catch up, too, though being down by 48" at this point!
Marentes (GC's 7th, + 2.05)
Duenas (GC's 5th, + 1.57)
another minute in arrears with still 9km to the mountaintop!
Jeannesson (GC's 6th, + 2.05)
Schwab (GC's 8th, + 2.09)
further 33 seconds down...
Saggiorato (GC's 13th, + 2.17)
additional 19 seconds behind..
Most notable name mising those early moves, definitely
Ochoa Quintero (GC's 4th, + 1.53)
He attacked quite late, but is now trying to catch up to group Schwab at least..
The early breakaway holding on to a 1'16" on a strong going group Rodrigues/Arroyo, as we now have 5.5km to the mountaintop.
Beltran suffers and can't follow Rodrigues/Arroyo anymore! He might be in danger to lose his 2nd place in the GC with Raisin/Sorensen/Arroyo now already 39" ahead!
It definitely looks like a stage made for climbers rather than puncheurs:
Arroyo/Rodrigues appear to be the very best of all GC-contenders and drop Sorensen/Raisin/Txurruka 2km to the summit!
The ealry break also within reach now (just 12" ahead) and there are no major movements in those small groups behind..
Prior to the mountain sprint, Arroyo and Rodrigues join the remaining early escapees Valencia/Flückiger/Firsanov!
Arroyo takes the sprint and Rodrigues grabs valuable points towards the polka dot:
KoM-competition Rodrigues 32 Castano 32 Beltran 28
So this will be a shared KoM-victory as there are no more points up for grabs!
An overview at the mountaintop, as we now just have 10km of downhill to come:
Arroyo on a very good way to make a huge jump onto the podium, while Rodrigues looks save to keep yellow!
Beltran fought his way back to Sorensen/Godoy, while Raisin and Txurruka lost some ground.. Ochoa joined group Schwab and fights to limit the losses to those group ahead..
With still Guamo de la Cruz in between the 6-men-leading group (Appleby fought his way back to the front), we see a 5-men-group formed:
+ 1.33 Sorensen, Txurruka, Beltran, Raisin, Godoy
+ 2.50 Ochoa Quintero, Schwab, Duenas/Jeannesson, Saggiorato
Just 6km remaining, Ochoa in trouble to lose his 4th in the GC.. Beltran though is still a great option for Nutresa, of course!
The leading group is out of reach for anyone else though: Firsanov and Rodrigues head-to-head with the line already approaching..
..and that's how you finish off a GC-victory in style: Rodrigues takes both the stage and the GC-win today! As this wouldn't be enough, he also adds the points-shirt and the shared KoM-crown!
Firsanov with a strong 2nd ahead of Flückiger, Valencia and Arroyo! Also Appleby finishes within the same time as 6th..
+ 33" Guama de la Cruz
+ 1'34" Sorensen Beltran Godoy
So those three with a strong downhill performance, dropping Raisin/Txurruka easily!
+ 2'27" for group Ochoa Quintero Marentes Jeannesson/Duenas
Quite a loss for Ochoa in particular...
But first, credit where credit is due: Rodrigues with a comfortable victory, finishing more than two minutes ahead of the runner-up...
... Beltran! What a close one for Arroyo, who missed this 2nd place by just 2 seconds eventually. Of course a huge fight by Beltran, who bounced back from his earlier troubles on the climb.
Godoy and Sorensen complete the Top-5 ahead of Quintero, who indeed dropped down two places today. No huge drama with Beltran keeping his 2nd.
Duenas/Jeannesson, Marentes and Schwab rounding up the Top-10 ahead of Saggiorato and Raisin.
A quite entertaining Tour of Utah with Rodrigues once again proving his strength!
