The Tour of Tasmania concludes with a 15km timetrial, featuring one short but steep climb close to the finish.
TT-specialists like Coppel, Phinney or Zabriskie will aim for the stage and the GC's Top-15, while also Gesink, Taaramäe or GC-leader Trofimov can be real threats for the stage.
So let's start with those Coppels and Phinneys: they are all 2'42" down on Trofimov in the GC and therefore almost a minute behind GC's 12th Claeys, who of course looks beatable. With Gesink and Taaramäe fighting for the Top-10, this seems to be out of reach for the TT-specialists.
Zabriskie has a rather early start and already proves, that flat TTlers will struggle against punchier TTlers:
The Big Z sets a new BT by 24" on Kittel and 26" on Durbridge!
Posthuma, who finished as 10th here last season, has again the chance to go for a similar strong result:
+ 16" on Zabriskie though, finishing as provisional 3rd behind a strong Bookwalter (+ 0.14)!
Coppel as next favorite on the road and it's no surprise to see him crushing the long leading time from Zabriskie:
new leader by 23" on Zabriskie!
Phinney definitely won't repeat last year's podium and his biggest goal may be the stage-win today:
+ 4" on Coppel as new 2nd! A close one..
With now just the GC's Top-12 to come, we take a look at the provisional rankings: Coppel surely with the time to beat here. All those names are likely to finish inside (or close to the) Top-20 in the GC eventually.
But now for the rather close battle inside the Top-10.. let's begin with those fighting for the last two spots inside the tour's best ten:
Rk Rider GC Finish Leader Trofimov Coppel 9 Sanchez Gil+ 1'30 10 Taaramäe+ 1'53 11 Gesink+ 1'53 12 Claeys+ 1'53
Claeys' only target will be to limit the losses and somehow keep a Top-15 spot. With so many way better TTlers being just a minute down in the GC, it will be a tough challenge for him.
Gesink and Taaramäe though will surely aim for more: Sanchez Gil in danger to lose his 9th..
Rk Rider GC Finish Leader Trofimov Coppel 9 Sanchez Gil+ 1'30 + 1'00 10 Taaramäe+ 1'53 + 0'28 11 Gesink+ 1'53 + 0'28 12 Claeys+ 1'53 + 1'46
So Coppel holding on to his lead, which is very good news for his mission to take the stage. But more important for those four riders: Claeys in danger to drop far down the rankings and also Sanchez Gil had no chance to hold off Gesink/Taaramäe, who finish with the same time!
Those two stage-placing's will decide over who of them finishes 9th or 10th eventually. The Top-8 may still be in striking distance, too, though..
But first, let's focus on this very close fight from 4th to 8th:
Rk Rider GC Finish Leader Trofimov Coppel 4 Ponzi+ 53 5 Schumacher+ 53 6 Gilbert+ 53 7 Schleck+ 53 8 Dekker+ 1'13
Dekker definitely with a shot at this 4th place, as he's by far the strongest TTler of them. Schumacher and Gilbert may be capable of defending those 20 seconds thanks to this rather short TT.
Ponzi and Schleck will need a very special day to keep their placings..
Rk Rider GC Finish Leader Trofimov Coppel 4 Ponzi+ 53 + 1'25 5 Schumacher+ 53 + 0'51 6 Gilbert+ 53 + 1'06 7 Schleck+ 53 + 1'22 8 Dekker+ 1'13 + 0'38
Let's come up with the Gesink/Taaramäe regarding news first: it was a pretty close decision, but Ponzi and Schleck did just enough to keep their Top-8 in the GC!
Ponzi though going down from 4th to 8th, Schleck slightly better to keep his 7th. Dekker with a nice jump, but thanks to Schumacher's pretty solid performance, he has to settle for 5th in the GC.
At least for the virtual GC, as him and also Schumacher may have a minor chance to attack the podium:
Rk Rider GC Finish Leader Trofimov Coppel 2 Van Garderen+ 29 3 Boasson Hagen+ 33
Hagen and Van Garderen, both similar "strong" against the clock, battle their own thrilling fight for the runner-up.. but with just 20 seconds on Schumacher prior to the stage, their podium is anything but safe!
Rk Rider GC Finish Leader Trofimov Coppel 2 Van Garderen+ 29 + 1'14 3 Boasson Hagen+ 33 + 1'06
Another really tight decision, but also those two keep their podium spots!
And Boasson Hagen obviously with the better day, gaining back those 4 seconds on defending champion TVG to move past him on this final day!
Trofimov can take things rather easy today, as there was no real danger for him to lose his yellow. It may be just about stealing the stage from Coppel.. but...
+ 45" as 12th on the stage and definitely enough to avoid any unexpected drama!
And so for the final GC: Trofimov with a well deserved victory (plus the points competition) after his strong showing in the hilly stage.. Boasson Hagen 2nd ahead of last year's winner Van Garderen!
How close for Schumacher though, who misses out on the podium by just a second! Dekker with a strong 5th ahead of Gilbert, Schleck and stage one winner Ponzi.
Completing the Top-10 are Taaramäe and Gesink, while Sanchez Gil finishes 11th ahead of Coppel, Phinney (winning the U25 competition), Zabriskie and Bookwalter, who rounds up a strong result for Wikipedia here.
Claeys dropping down to 32nd today, which is probably worse than he had expected.
Speaking of Wikipedia's strong overall result: Meyer did already seal the polka dot yesterday, but credit where credit is due, so here he is celebrating.
Wikipedia also took the team's competition ahead of Tinkoff and Aker!
And now enjoy the post-race rankings...
