Tour of Utah - Stage 5
tsmoha
i.imgur.com/VMbXqs3.jpg

Fifth day in Utah and this may be the crucial: the 182km stage features the only summit finish here. A not too long, but steep challenge up the "Snowbird"!

Will GC-leader Beltran manage to hang on with the best climbers? Arroyo, Rodrigues, Schwab or Ochoa Quintero need to attack for sure.

i.imgur.com/Z2PV2te.jpg

6 riders went clear right from the start, establishing a 3'30"-gap quickly:

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/nor.png Jovanovic
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/esc.png Agnoli
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ano.png Bakhin
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/onc.png Salas
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/alp.png Rubiano Chavez
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mlj.png Fumic

Except of Agnoli, who's already down by 10 minutes in the GC, all of those medium strong climbers are + 1.36 on Beltran. So definitely not a group, you would want to fool the bunch..

i.imgur.com/7gnwOBf.jpg

So it's no surprise to see several teams (mainly Nutresa and Chiquita) interested in keeping the gap at some less dangerous level. Which those teams do: 60km before finish (Bakhin took the first sprint), the peloton is just 1'10" in arrears and looking in control so far.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rse.png Landa is now the first premium climber to attack!

i.imgur.com/0khMWz7.jpg

His move causes an even higher pace though and just a few minutes later (54km remaining), both Landa and the early escapees are pulled back by the peloton! 105 riders enter today's longest and penultimate climb.

Salas, by the way, took out the second intermediate sprint..

i.imgur.com/2eK3zTa.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rse.png Landa gave it another go then, accompanied by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/spr.png Saggiorato: but he fails again!

More luck for this duo now?

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/azt.png Rodriguez and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/onc.png Castano try to escape about 2.5km to the mountaintop! Castano lost more than four minutes after his crash yesterday, but seems to be okay to go stage-hunting, at least!

i.imgur.com/iLCG2uH.jpg

And he looks strong: while Castano opened up a minutes-gap on Rodriguez, the latter is now joined by race-leader i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gnu.png Beltran, who jumped away from the bunch close to the mountaintop!

KoM-competition i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gnu.png Beltran 28 i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/onc.png Castano 16 i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/esc.png Edmondson 14

Just a move to defend his KoM-lead? Except of a struggling Rodriguez, there has been no serious threat for Beltran so far in this stage..

i.imgur.com/iynu1cv.jpg

We may find out about his intentions after the stage, but for now it's clear, that he's trying to put some pressure on the better climbers:

Beltran joins Castano on the downhill, dropping Rodriguez easily!

+ 1'37" for the next bigger group (28 riders) with most of the remaining GC-contenders with now still 28km to go..

Most notable names being dropped so far:

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/alp.png Chamorro (7th in GC)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ioa.png Rodas
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/spr.png Schurter
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/esc.png Earle (8th)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tcu.png Selander (3rd)

No real shocker for those less talented climbers..

i.imgur.com/yX9ZTAV.jpg

12.5km remaining, we're soon to enter the climb up Snowbird:

Beltran/Castano still leading, but the 28-men-group - led by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/onc.png Arroyo himself - is coming closer: 56" to be precisive..

i.imgur.com/VZkz3SW.jpg

Just a few moments later, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/scl.png Rodrigues attacks!

i.imgur.com/b6Uex6Y.jpg

He catches up to the leading duo 8km before finish! Beltran actually tried to shake off Castano, but couldn't hold on.

This new leading trio is 46" ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/wwr.png Rudaskov, who tried to follow Rodrigues without luck..

i.imgur.com/INPR03T.jpg

Castano now looking much stronger than Beltran, who more and more suffers from his efforts here! Rodrigues also in troubles for a few seconds, but he will fight back immediately.

i.imgur.com/pjoVekH.jpg

3.4km remaining for the group of favorites, which is now already down by 1'48" on Rodrigues/Castano!

Beltran (as well as Rudaskov) though are reeled in, as now i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gnu.png Ochoa Quintero and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/eub.png Jeannesson show themselves at the front of this elite group..

i.imgur.com/PA5HJ0g.jpg

There's no chance to bridge across the leading duo though: Rodrigues kicks off the sprint for line honours and they are still about 1'30" in the lead..

..who will take the stage?

i.imgur.com/CkEPzIn.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/onc.png Castano! A huge effort after his crash yesterday. Probably no GC-threat anymore though..

+ 13" i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/scl.png Rodrigues, who is likely to slip into yellow, if the latest gap keep the same..

i.imgur.com/pW3zMzd.jpg

Quintero, Arroyo, Jeannesson and Montenegro open up a small gap on the bigger group now..

i.imgur.com/2BbBJlV.jpg

+ 1'54" i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gnu.png Ochao Quintero

+ 2'10" i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tcu.png Montenegro, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/onc.png Arroyo and also the remaining group of 23 riders! A missed chance for Arroyo, as he didn't really show any huge efforts in this sprint..

Anyway, the yellow shirt moves again:

Rodrigues takes the race-lead, while Beltran did enough to hold off some better climbers today. 41" prior to tomorrow's hilly stage. Godoy 3rd ahead of Ochoa Quintero and some of the big guns moving up thanks to those earlier mentioned dropped riders.

Castano's stage-win also made him claim the polka dot, by the way.
