Tour of Beijing - Stage 2
Gustavovskiy
Day 2 of this event takes us to our first of two hilly stages. This one should work as a warm up for the decisive hill-top finish tomorrow, but this one isn’t all that innocuous.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/beijing02.png

Again we have a break of three riders:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/csc.png Newton
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ken.png Ndbri
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mac.png Pirazzi

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/beijing21.png

The Kenyan takes the 1st sprint ahead of the American. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mac.png Pirazzi seems more interested in the KoM competition and manages to surprise i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ken.png Ndbri for the 1st KoM prime.

Awkwardly i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/csc.png Newton and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ken.png Ndbri give up on their initial move and are about to be caught by the pack with 80km to go.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/beijing22.png

That doesn’t happen so quickly, as the 2 of them reunite to chase
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mac.png Pirazzi. They pass the 2nd intermediate sprint in the same order they had passed the 1st KoM prime.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mac.png Pirazzi also takes the prize through the 2nd KoM banner, while i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/csc.png Newton takes 2nd ahead of his companion. They’re trailing by 1’20, but have two minutes to the peloton.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/beijing23.png

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mac.png Pirazzi continues his solo adventure by capturing yet another KoM prime. This time a cat. 1 which should give him plenty of respite for the remainder of the race! There are 46km left to race though and his lead has been cut to 1’15 to the chasers plus 1’24 more to the pack

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/beijing24.png

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ken.png Ndbri just about edges out his colleague to take 2nd place there. However i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/csc.png Newton takes revenge by distancing him on the descent.

With 30km to go the Kenyan has been caught by the i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/abc.png Allianz-led bunch. The sole chaser should be their next meal, though.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/beijing25.png

We haven’t talked about much of what’s happening in the pack. Major news are that i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/abc.png Richeze has managed to hang on and sits in the front rows despite all the climbing done! i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/abc.png Talabardon and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/abc.png Campero are his guard dogs

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/csc.png Newton gets caught as we start climbing again. That’s where the first real attacks begin with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/amx.png Taborre and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cpl.png Dyachenko launching themselves. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mac.png Pirazzi still enjoys a 1’48 lead with 25km to go. This should be interesting.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/beijing26.png

This move fails but the duo tries again at the end of the climb with 3 more names: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rbc.png Warbasse, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/csc.png Lloret and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/fcb.png Didier. Meanwhile i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mac.png Pirazzi has just managed to take 1st place in all of today’s mountain sprints!! Chapeau!

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/beijing27.png

This group gets a 30’’ gap to the pack but is still trailing one minute on i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mac.png Pirazzi.

In the descent the peloton starts to shatter itself into multiple groups. Has anyone of importance lost contact? None other than the race leader! However, none of the GC contenders seems endangered. Meanwhile i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/amx.png Taborre can’t follow his companions in the chasing group and gets swallowed by the bunch

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/beijing28.png

Inside the last 15km i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kar.png Gerdemann goes on the attack!

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/beijing29.png

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mac.png Pirazzi is finally caught with 10km to go. This front group now has 1 minute on the peloton only.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/beijing210.png

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ven.png Venchi tries hard to bring i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kar.png Gerdemann back and they succeed in doing so, but the gap to the front remains the same!

Another offensive comes by! i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mei.png Ji, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gzl.png Monfort and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kar.png Gerdemann accelerate!

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/beijing211.png

This doesn’t stick either. The escapes maintain their advantage to the final kms and will decide the winner here. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/fcb.png Didier initiates the sprint early in an explosive fashion!

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/beijing212.png

Nobody seems able to close the gap to him…

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/beijing213.png

Meanwhile in the pack it’s i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bac.png Ulissi and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/amx.png Kump who take to the front! They seem to have saved all their energy to the finish as they start gaining time pretty quickly to the front guys…

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/beijing214.png

But nobody is going to take the victory from i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/fcb.png Didier! Great victory for him and his team! i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rbc.png Warbasse finishes 2nd ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/csc.png Lloret, who completes the podium.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/beijing215.png

Surprising stage today! The bunch got a hold of the escapees right at the end. If it weren’t for this final kick the late attackers could have built a gap to most of the GC contenders. Also, interesting to see i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/abc.png Richeze has made it back to the peloton before the finish, which makes him joint leader with today’s winner.
