Second day in Tasmania and it's a key day, of course: a challenging parcours from Penguin to Liena Rd, though not featuring the steepest climbs. We may expect some smaller groups fighting for gaps in those final 20km..
Boasson Hagen as the best puncheur on paper, but Ponzi and Trofimov already scored bonifications yesterday. Ponzi with a yellow boost today? Surely guys like defending champion Van Garderen will be amongst the best, too.
Of course it's also the day for those, who want to contest for the polka dot. Current leader Gallego Martin wouldn't make it into the 4-men-break, so we will see someone else taking over today:
Vermeltfoort and El Fares went first (with Vermeltfoort taking the first mountain sprint)
Meyer and Clement caught up with now the second climb ahead!
They lead by 3'16" and will surely build the break of the day..
Let's keep this short then. While Vermeltfoort did all he can to defend his earlier claimed lead in the KoM-battle, it's the best puncheur in this group taking the next three sprints easily:
KoM-competition Meyer 17 Vermeltfoort 13 Clement 9
With now 60km remaining, the breakaway's lead is down to 1'44" though.. with two late mountain sprints still to come, Meyer's lead ain't yet save..
It starts raining a few moments later and we also notice crosswinds up to 50kmh! This will add some spice for sure.
54km before finish (the peloton still pacing), a group of 4 riders tries to bridge across the early break:
Fumeaux, König, Flügel and Gastauer!
So with Flügel (and Schleck-domestique Gastauer) quite some notable names on the move..
They indeed managed to join the early breakaway soon, but the peloton kept chasing hard to pull all those escapees back! 31km to go, we're entering the most crucial parts and the peloton is alltogether again..
Well, at least for some moments, as the action goes on soon:
Hagen attacks and Ponzi quickly jumps behind!
Those moves kicked off a wave of more attacks with riders like Klemme, Van den Broeck, Claeys, Roux and also Schleck all trying to join Hagen/Ponzi as soon as possible!
Schleck finally does about 24km before finish, but you notice it's all coming back together with those three in the lead not willing to push further..
We're entering the final categorized climb and so it's definitely about time for the GC-favorites to create gaps:
Flügel and Sinkewitz gave it a go first, but they are soon swallowed by another wave of top-favorites trying to go clear!
Sanchez Gil kicking about 17km before finish (close the this hilltop), followed by Ponzi immediately!
Several more GC-contenders just a few seconds behind..
..and those make for a 9-men-group entering the final downhill sector with finally a (small) gap opened:
Schumacher
Sinkewitz
Sanchez Gil
Hagen
Ponzi
Trofimov
Nepomnyachsniy
Schleck
Claeys
Further 16" in arrears:
Keinath
Terpstra
Flügel
And another 31" the peloton (129 riders) with all remaining favorites!
13km to go and we see some more riders finally on the move - such as Gesink, Coppel, Van Garderen/Phinney or Costa!
Kinda shocking news, too, though: Sinkewitz slows down for no obvious reasons, yet giving up on his position in the leading group! He falls behind quickly. Did he suffer any injury or just forget his "medicine"?
The German will soon be swallowed by the bunch, as we now get a clearer picture of those groups at the front of the race now:
8 riders leading by 31" on a new 7-men-group with Van Garderen/Gesink/Coppel! Last year's 3rd Phinney in a third group with Costa and Flügel..
The first chasing group still trying to bridge across the leading group, with riders like Van Garderen, Gesink, Dekker and Gilbert accelerating on the descend! Coppel/Taaramäe look in trouble to follow..
And yes, we see further changes with now 8km remaining:
Dekker and Van Garderen bridged across the leading group to make it 10 in the lead!
25" in arrears, solo-chasing Gesink
38" for group Gilbert/Phinney/Coppel
1'18" for the peloton (123 riders)
About 5km remaining...
Gesink fights his way to those ten as well: 5km to go and the road slightly ascends again.
11 riders leading by 24" on Gilbert, 45" on Taaramäe and 1'06" on a TT-group Phinney/Coppel!
Hagen accelerating again, followed by Trofimov quickly!
Hagen indeed opening up a gap now! And we also see Ponzi in trouble, as the leading group went into pieces thanks to this latest attacks:
Hagen with a small lead over Trofimov, Van Garderen, Schumacher, Schleck, Dekker and Sanchez Gil!
Ponzi, joined by Gilbert, is 20" in arrears with now 4km to go!
Gesink struggling again, down by 42" on Hagen..
The leading group keeps pushing it: Van Garderen and Trofimov catch up to Hagen!
Schleck trying to hang on, while Schumacher doesn't look like he will be in the mix for line honours..
Just a few hundred metres remaining: Trofimov now dropping Hagen/Van Garderen, with Schleck/Schumacher still a few seconds further behind..
Ponzi fighting his way to the finish, with riders like Gilbert, Dekker and Sanchez Gil in his range.. it's something like 40" of disadvantage for Ponzi at this point, so he is likely to lose yellow..
And Trofimov is likely to take it over: he wins the stage quite dominating eventually!
+ 13" Van Garderen Hagen
+ 25" Schumacher Schleck Gilbert
So Gilbert with a quite strong finish here!
+ 45" Ponzi Dekker
+ 1'02" Sanchez Gil
+ 1'25" Gesink Claeys Taaramäe
+ 2'14" for the peloton with Coppel, Phinney, Flügel or Costa, who all failed to hold on to their gap!
Quite a loss for Gesink, who had his problems today. Ponzi couldn't hang on with the best, but may still be on the podium now..
No! Trofimov takes yellow by 29" on Van Garderen and 33" on Hagen. As the best TT-specialist of those, the Russian will fancy his chances to win the GC tomorrow.
Ponzi 53" behind as 4th, facing a thrilling battle with Schumacher, Gilbert and Schleck! Also Dekker (1.13) may target for the Top-5 though.
For those TT-beasts like Phinney and Coppel, it will be a tough challenge to score a Top-10 in the GC here: both are almost a minute behind Taaramäe/Gesink, who are amongst the best TTlers anyway.
