The race is heading for Torrey, where a flat finish ends a 210km stage: rated as hilly, the route looks quite mountainous and may suit both puncheurs and climbers.
Godoy as the best allrounder should be considered a favorite, but so will guys like Schurter or GC-favorites like Rodrigues, Arroyo or Sorensen. Hard to pick a clear favorite.. GC-leader Matthews may struggle to keep yellow though..
Like yesterday, an early breakaway attempt by Earle (who took the first mountain sprint), Selander and Jovanovic is shut down quickly. Selander maybe too much of a danger for some teams today.
The Stobart boys wouldn't give up trying though, and it was Edmondson, who launched a next move! And this time, it's looking like we will see the break of the day on it's way, as he is accompanied by Barta, Dall'Oste and Jacobsen to establish a 3'30"-gap with 143km remaining!
Edmondson would take the second mountain sprint, while we now see four more riders attacking the again hard chasing peloton inside the final 100km:
Hasanovic, Ebsen, Zurita and Raisin!
It's an empty-handed effort though, as Risa and Siam pull them back quickly, yet narrowing the gap to the breakaway group as well:
2'35" advantage for the leading four with 75km to go..
In the meantime, Edmondson also takes the next mountain sprint for the provisional co-leadership with teammate Wurf (both 12pts)!
The head is still on: 56km to go and as soon as the peloton enters today's toughest climb, we see a next wave of attacks:
Richardson, Raisin and Duenas!
This trio is just 41" down on the three remaining escapees (Edmondson, Dall'Oste, Barta), but also the peloton is just a few seconds in arrears..
Marentes and Yermane tried to jump behind a few moments later, but it's just Marentes catching up to the new leading group just at the mountaintop:
Raisin, Richardson, Marentes and Duenas dropped Edmondson, Dall'Oste and Yermane and will enter the final 39km with an advantage of 2'51" on the peloton (73 riders)! Quite surprising to see, that Risa and Siam now struggled to keep their pace up.
Anyway, Edmondson adds two points to claim the polka dot from his teammate today:
KoM-competition Edmondson 14 Wurf 12 Raisin 10
Still a way to go for this 4-men-group at the front, as the bunch (down to 72 riders after this climb) founds back to a good pace:
12km before finish, it's mostly Siam and Live Natio, which narrow the gap back to a minute!
Most notable names being dropped by the bunch: Matthews, Ebsen and a few more pure climbers/domestiques. So Matthews definitely going to lose yellow, as to be expected..
So it's not just about the line honours, but also yellow:
3km to go and the leading group holds on to 51"-gap on the hard chasing bunch.. this may be a close one..
The four kept shadowing each other til the final km and there gap is gone: as soon as Raisin kicks off the sprint from the leading position, the bunch is just a few metres behind!
And a few more names will be in the mix for line honours that way:
Duenas easily went past Raisin, with Richardson and Marentes doing the same!
Out of the bunch, Rodrigues, Feillu and Chamorro already caught up to those four.. anything but a well organized sprint, of course..
Rodrigues looked pretty strong for a moment, but he now struggles to make up more ground! Duenas now facing a late acceleration by Marentes, with also Richardson still hanging on!
Moving forward with some huge speed: Firsanov!
But he came too late: Duenas holds on til the line and takes this second stage ahead of Marentes and Rodrigues, who grabs some minor bonifications at least! A pretty outstanding effort from those mid-stage attackers, as they looked done a kilometre before finish..
Richardson and Firsanov complete the Top-5... and with Matthews losing 5'43" eventually, we have a new man in yellow..
Duenas! Of course thanks to his bonus seconds, he will enter the first mountain stage with 8" on Marentes and 12" on Rodrigues. Still about 71 riders in the mix for the GC, so today's stage wasn't exactly the most selective.
