Tour of Utah - Stage 1

i.imgur.com/v2MY8cB.jpg

The Tour of Utah kicks off with the only flat rated stage, featuring 180km from Brian Head to Cedar City. The profile ain't too easy, though lacking too steep slopes.

Anything but a bunch sprint would be a major fail for teams like Azteca and Risa, which brought Farrar and Matthews as the clear favorites amongst a few more sprinters like Sabatini, Friedman or Westling.

i.imgur.com/vG20OqP.jpg

Two riders - i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/alp.png Rivera and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/del.png Guozhang - went clear right from the start, with Rivera taking the first mountain sprint. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/esc.png Wurf tried to join this duo, but failed.

Anyway, the duo is never allowed to establish a bigger gap and this won't change as three more riders bridged across them:

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lpu.png Cerny, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/boi.png Mullen and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mlj.png Haig make it a 5-men-break with the bunch still just a minute in arrears with 145km to go!

i.imgur.com/ajjpTVI.jpg

And indeed, those five just weren't allowed to stay clear and they are swallowed by the peloton already 80km before finish!

Cerny took out the only intermediate sprint, while teams like Siam or Risa control the race to this point..

i.imgur.com/mOi9bF4.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/esc.png Wurf though gives it another try 67km before finish and he's accompanied by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/alp.png Rubiano Chavez to open up a minutes-gap quickly.

It's the most challenging sector of the day and the bunch seems to allow them going for a mid-stage-break..

i.imgur.com/yehbhCm.jpg

At the top of the final ascend, the duo indeed went for a 2'45"-advantage with still 40km to go!

Wurf took the second mountain sprint and also tries to drop Chavez with an acceleration:

KoM-competition i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/esc.png Wurf 12 i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/alp.png Rivera 10 i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/del.png Guozhang 8

i.imgur.com/SCi06Y8.jpg

The peloton though starts chasing again and the tricky downhill sector sees it's first victim:

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/eub.png Parra Bustamante went down about 35km to the line. He won't make it back to the bunch..

i.imgur.com/YS1IKV3.jpg

It's a brutal pace now and 15km before finish (where the Wurf leads by a minute on the bunch) we see another crash back in the peloton! Again some possible GC-contenders involved, unfortunatelly:

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bon.png Txurruka and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tas.png Richardson as the most notable names here! This is horrible news for both teams, as it's their expected GC-leaders hitting the turf! Bonsucro with some bad luck on US roads, it seems. We still remember Nicacio quitting the Tour of America way too early..

It's pretty obvious that those riders won't make it back to the peloton either..

i.imgur.com/vxNilOW.jpg

Back to the front though: 5km to go for solo-leading Wurf, who fights hard to hold on to a 28"-gap.. ain't looking too promising though..

i.imgur.com/jDd0hDM.jpg

The Aussie is still leading 3km before finish, but it looks like he's soon to be caught with two sprint trains being set up just a few metres behind:

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rse.png Cooperi439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cdb.png Van Leijen
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rse.png Suttoni439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cdb.png Stevenson
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rse.png Matthewsi439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cdb.png Sabatini
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tcu.png Friedman
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gnu.png Haedo
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/boi.png Hawkins
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ano.png Pozdnyakov
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ioa.png Aulas
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/wwr.png Fisher

Obviously, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/azt.png Farrar as the most notable name missing so far..

i.imgur.com/xbZQzNj.jpg

..and he's still not there in the two final corners, where Wurf indeed had nothing left to counter:

Cooper now releasing Sutton/Matthews with now just Friedman right behind!

On the right side of the road: Carlsberg's train with Haedo and Pozdnyakov catching up to Sabatini..

i.imgur.com/12DLaaT.jpg

With the final km approaching, Risa's train though looking quite perfect so far: Sutton/Matthews establishing a small advantage on Sabatini, who now tries to hang on!

Friedman looks done, while Haedo/Pozdyankov/Hawkins are kinda boxed in by those final leadout men from Carlsberg and Risa!

i.imgur.com/ThA0FED.jpg

Once he had a free road ahead, Haedo kicks with an impressive speed now! Pozdnyakov trying to hang on, while Sabatini couldn't yet close up to Matthews!

The Aussie is now leaving Sutton's slipstream..

i.imgur.com/QqQdBXf.jpg

..and brings it home easily: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rse.png Matthews takes out the opener in style! A great leadout from i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rse.png Cooper (15th) and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rse.png Sutton (4th), so well deserved victory.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gnu.png Haedo had a strong finish for 2nd, beating i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cdb.png Sabatini, Sutton and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ano.png Pozdnyakov... a disappointing i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/azt.png Farrar (8th) struggled early into the sprint and has to settle for a minor Top-10 today.

Unfortunatelly, we also had those GC-contenders losing time today:

+ 5'00" for group i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bon.png Txurruka i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tas.png Richardson

+ 6'49" for a group with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/eub.png Parra Bustamante

Matthews won't care too much, as he slips into yellow with the first hilly stage to come. Of course we can expect to see some major changes in the GC tomorrow..

In other news, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/spr.png Jiriakov did not finish the stage and had to abandon.
