Rated as hilly, today's 117km parcours finishing in Manizales looks actually more challenging than yesterday's mountain stage: the tough climb up "Plaza de Toros" about 5km before the finish can well be a crucial climb for the GC here.
So race-leader RodrÃguez may hope for his mountain skills to pay off, while Godoy can be the most dangerous threat for his yellow today.. Top-favorites like Rodrigues, Arroyo or Ochoa Quintero may be more aggressive than yesterday though.
Nutresa does it again: joining the early breakaway with a medium strong climber!
Diniz
Masuda
Wu
So it's actually three teams with GC-favorites (Iglinski, Ochoa, Rodrigues) in their rows. An interesting breakaway for sure.
Halfway through the race (46km to go) the group established a 3'20"-gap on the bunch. All those three riders are + 2.31 in the GC, by the way. Wu as the strongest in those three mountain sprints so far:
KoM-competition Valencia 28 Wu 22 RodrÃguez 20
You may expect teams like ONCE or Bonsucro feeling the pressure now, but it's Siam (accompanied by TomTom, Sauber and Azteca) showing it's colors also at the front of the peloton! Interesting, to say at least..
The pack (79 riders) is down by 2'29" with just 34km to go and the toughest challenge yet to come. What's the plan for Siam here?
Ahhh, now we know! 18km before finish, we get the answer for Siam leading the chase:
Rodrigues is the first top-favorite launching a move here!
RodrÃguez
Duenas
Alizadeh try to follow...
..but it's just Rodrigues bridging across the early break about 14km before finish and so still 8.5km to the mountaintop!
This 4-men-group leads by a minute on the peloton (34 riders left) and Rodrigues now has some decent support with Wu at his side. So far, a smart move for sure.
8km remaining and it's a tough challenge for the peloton to narrow this gap: 51" with teams like ONCE and Euskaltel now pulling the strings hard.
Ochoa Quintero, Duenas and Castano went for a short-lived attack a few moments before, but they couldn't establish a gap..
GC's 5th Duenas (+ 0.12) tries again though: 1km to the mountaintop, the Spaniard tries to bridge across the 33"-gap on the leading group!
He failed again. The peloton though goes strong now with ONCE leading the pursuit: while Diniz tries to solo away from the leading group, the bunch is now just 40" in arrears. Will it be an empty-handed attempt by Rodrigues eventually?
His teammate Wu did his best today and will be rewarded with the KoM-lead at least:
KoM-competition Wu 30 Valencia 28 Diniz 26
Rodrigues is anything but done yet! He attacks the group with less than 5km to go, trying to close up to Diniz.
28" in arrears, there's group Wu/Masuda now joined by top-favorites like Arroyo/Duenas, but there's no bigger gap on the bunch.
A few notable names got dropped on those final kms though:
Valencia (GC's 2nd)
Beltran
Rosskopf as the most notable...
Rodrigues easily flies past Diniz! And he powers to the finish, opening up a growing gap on the first chasing groups!
What a demonstration of strength: Rodrigues soloes to a huge victory today! Given his disadvantage in the GC prior to the stage (2.31), he may not slip into yellow. But his performance was quite impressive anyway.
+ 46" Diniz and Masuda, both with a strong effort to hold off the bunch!
+ 1'54" for the bunch with Kulhavy, Iglinski and Raisin completing the Top-6!
So Arroyo, who tried a late attack on the climb, couldn't maintain this small gap he had on the top of the climb. Quite a loss against Rodrigues today.
RodrÃguez finishes safely inside this group, too..
..opposing to some other GC-contenders:
+ 3'38" Valencia/Beltran and Rosskopf
+ 4'29" De Greef
Beltran with a rather surprising loss, but he obviously had to support Valencia here. An unlucky day for the latter, as he loses the 2nd in GC, the points- as well as the KoM-lead!
RodrÃguez though defends his yellow by a small margin! Godoy and Duenas stay on the provisional podium with Rodrigues moving up to 4th and just a 17"-gap on the GC-lead now!
Diniz, Masuda and Wu moving up into the Top-10, too, while Valencia drops from 2nd to 7th today.. Iglinski, Quintero, Arroyo, Sorensen or Moreno all + 2.31 on RodrÃguez and therefore with already a 2-minutes-disadvantage on top-favorite Rodrigues!
Three riders did not make the time limit, check them names below..
