The Clasico RCN is about to start and we're kicking this 6-days-event off with the first of three mountain stages in total: 203km today, featuring the HC-rated climb up "Alto de la Linea" with a long way (48km) down to the finish in La Tebeida.
So it may be questioned if we will see a selective race. Anyway, any GC-favorites like Arroyo or Rodrigues need to take care of serious attacks and bonus seconds at the finish can be crucial as well.
A breakaway of 4 riders is quickly built:
Valencia
H Parra Bustamante
Lammertink
Matteau
Two local favorites looking set to go both for the stage and the first KoM-lead, too. Valencia takes the first sprint.
The group is allowed to establish an 8-minutes-gap halfway through the race and Valencia appears to be the strongest with also taking the next two intermediate spritns for bonifications.
It's also him to take the next two mountain sprints, with just Lammertink managing to hang on! Matteau already 46" down with now 72km remaining, while Parra Bustamante already got swallowed by the bunch in the meantime: 4'30" advantage for Valencia at this point:
KoM-competition Valencia 18 Lammertink 10 Bustamante 4
Pts-competition Valencia 16 Lammertink 12 Matteau 8
We're now on today's toughest climb, still about 18km to the mountaintop (and 66km to the finish):
Siam as the team leading the chase back in the bunch, yet struggling to keep the pressure up though. The peloton is still about 5 minutes in arrears..
Siam kept pushing it and with now 51km remaining (and just 3.5km to the mountaintop), Valencia/Lammertink are leading by 2'50".. we now see a group of 3 riders attacking the peloton:
Godoy
Duenas
RodrÃguez
This trio bridges across the leading two quickly! RodrÃguez takes the HC-climb and the leading group's advantage is still at 3 minutes:
KoM-competition Valencia 28 RodrÃguez 20 Lammertink 18
With an allrounder like Godoy in the lead, it's definitely a dangerous situation for teams like Siam, ONCE or Maloja. They all try to narrow the gap on the downhill:
2'06" for the 5-men-group at the front, as we now have just 23km to go!
5km before finish - Godoy gave it an empty-handed attempt to go clear from the leading group - it does indeed look like the peloton will fail to catch those five:
1'11" advantage and no sign of weakness for those riders in the lead!
They actually gain back some more seconds on this final kms, so yeah, the stage will go to this group:
Godoy gives it another go close to the flamme rouge.. the others try to follow a few moments later..
..and it's RodrÃguez, who manages to fight back close to the finish: he goes past Godoy with just a few metres to go..
..and takes out this opener: a huge win for RodrÃguez, who beats Godoy to take the GC-lead! Being one of the better climbers here, this definitely puts some pressure on the top-favorites.
Duenas completes the podium ahead of Valencia (who takes the points- and KoM-lead though), while Lammertink did well to hang on for 5th today!
+ 2'11" for the peloton! Quite a bummer, as it looked at least set to narrow the gap back to under a minute at times. Siam though obviously had to do quite a lot of work on it's own today.
This gives RodrÃguez a 2'31"-gap on the GC-favorites, while of course also riders like Valencia, Duenas or Godoy in particular can be real threats for the GC now. Tomorrow's first hilly stage features a more challenging route with a long climb close to a flat finish. Anything is possible.
