Tour of Northern Europe - Stage 8
SportingNonsense
A quirk of reversing the route of last year's race is that the final stage is a 7.6km time trial. Hardly a prologue! Can it be long enough to cause much positional changes? The hill at the end could certainly help.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-8-1.jpg

Just as with the first time trial, the report can start by saying that the early leader is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vsa.png Kittel, putting 17 seconds into i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/swi.png Dillier and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/fes.png Bernaudeau.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-8-2.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ing.png Van Winden took hold of 2nd place for a 4 second loss, while halving the gap was i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bec.png Sergent, only 2 seconds down.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-8-3.jpg

Next up was the first time trial winner, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ing.png Fiedler. But he trailed by 1 second at the checkpoint!

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-8-4.jpg

That turned into 2 seconds down at the finish with Fiedler only managing 3rd place. Well well well, Kittel has really set the marker higher today.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/prp.png Costa used the first time trial to move into the Top 50 in GC, and he uses this one to gain 4 positions into 40th place. After trailing by 13 seconds at halfway, he became the first noted rider to gain on Kittel after the final hill, finishing 9 seconds down at the end.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-8-5.jpg

That final hill gained Costa at least one stage position since i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bampo.png Steensen was faster than him at the first check, but slower than the finish. The Dane is also able to climb into the Top 40 today.

A frustrating race for Bpost and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bpv.png van der Hugenhaben. After forcing Vanspeybrouck to wait for him on the cobbles, he then failed to make up any ground on the hills. Despite his hill advantage, he even loses a second to Kittel on the second half today (to make a total loss off 22 seconds). There is quite a bit of flat in the 2nd half, besides the uphill finish, but it shows that TT stat is clearly dominating.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-8-6.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pbn.png Konovalovas and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lap.png Bauer started the day 23rd and 22nd separated by just 2 seconds.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-8-7.jpg

And today they rode the exact same time so Bauer will maintain his slender advantage. The pair end up less than 20 seconds away from the Top 20 GC.

Just inside that Top 20 at the start of the day is the battle for the U25 classification. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pro.png Sinkeldam with a 16 second lead over i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bec.png Polnicky after a better time trial - but the Czech rider is stronger over prologues and certainly has a chance today.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-8-8.jpg

Polnicky is indeed faster today, but only by 7 seconds, so Sinkeldam will win that competition. To make things worse for Polnicky, he loses 20th place in GC to Sinkeldam's team mate i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pro.png De Kort, who slots in between the two after finishing 16 seconds slower than Kittel today.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-8-9.jpg

Very interesting news from the first checkpoint as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bpv.png Cornu has gone through 1 secibd slower than Kittel. The wind is unchanged all day, so certainly an impressive ride by the German.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-8-10.jpg

As Cornu rides towards the final hill, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/trh.png Sanchez Gil is already there. Adopting team duties yesterday after winning the first hill stage, he'd like to push into the Top 15 today.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-8-11.jpg

He will move ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/btc.png Roelandts but falls 2 seconds short of overtaking i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bec.png Stybar, so must settle for 16th.

Now here is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bpv.png Cornu at the finish.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-8-12.jpg

The Belgian champion takes the lead by 4 seconds! Could be a stage win, and could also be a Top 10 GC ride.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/tcs.png Kozontchuk will slip to 14th, and there is an interesting battle next between i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pro.png Van der Velde and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/wik.png Van Garderen. The Dutchman is a slightly better time trialist and has a 2 second advantage, but the American can clearly benefit from the hill.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-8-13.jpg

The American is able to turn it around! He is 6 seconds faster than Van der Velde after a storming final kilometre. He will stay in 12th, with the Dutchman down 2 to 13th - both overtaken by Cornu. The weaker ride from Van der Velde could also affect Project 1t4i's aim to overtake Pendleton's for the teams classification win.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/akm.png Kruijswijk is first to secure a Top 10 GC as he posts a time 28 seconds slower than Cornu, having had a 48 second lead on him.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-8-14.jpg

Kruijswijk's eyes are aiming forwards though, with just 4 seconds to make up on i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bec.png Bewley

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-8-15.jpg

But the Kiwi limits his loss to 3 seconds, so just stays ahead!

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lap.png Burghardt next, and he finishes 48 seconds slower than Cornu. Disappointment for Cornu though, as the gap at the start of the day was 55 seconds, so he must settle for 11th overall as Burghardt clings on to 10th.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pnd.png Gusev finishes 20 seconds down on Cornu. He needs to gain 23 on Pozzato.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-8-16.jpg

But i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vwm.png Pozzato is only 8 seconds slower, and holds onto 6th overall.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-8-17.jpg

After gaining 5 seconds on him in the closing stages, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pnd.png Gilbert actually matches the time of teammate Gusev.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-8-18.jpg

That's 5th overall for the Belgian road race champion, while the Belgian time trial champion continues to lead.

Speaking of national champions, here is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pro.png Posthuma.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-8-19.jpg

Only 6th at the checkpoint, he improves to 3rd at the finish, 5 seconds off Cornu. Can he get on the GC podium? Unlikely.

And bad news for Project 1t4i as it is not enough to win the teams classification. Pendleton's hold on by 4 seconds, with Gilbert and Gusev proving really key for them.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/swi.png Schumacher starts today just 23 seconds from the lead, but is the weakest against the clock of the Top 3.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-8-20.jpg

He goes 7th in the stage at the finish after a strong ride, just 10 seconds behind Cornu.

This puts i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/trh.png Boom under pressure with only 5 seconds to play with.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-8-21.jpg

But Boom is faster, going 6th just 7 seconds off Cornu, and he seals a vital 2nd overall for Rothaus.

This just leaves i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/srb.png Cancellara.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-8-22.jpg

He was never going to lose the lead today, but in his last individual ride of the season, he wants a win!

And he gets it! 3 seconds up on Cornu at the checkpoint, increased to 5 by the finish.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2014/tone-8-23.jpg

His first stage win of the race but strong enough riding across the board - underpinned by his excellent time trialing - means that he has won this race for the 2nd time. He had podiummed in 4 of the 5 editions of the race!

The points jersey battle was unaffected today, Cancellara only rising to 4th, so Sam Bewley edges out Ben Swift - despite the Brit being the only rider to win 2 stages. Vyacheslav Kuznetsov already sealed the KoM jersey on Stage 7.
